I'm Matthias Bosch.
I'm a climber from Austria and I'm part of the national team for eight years.
Right now I live in Innsbruck, which is really great because we have the best facility to
train here.
Last year it was really hard because we didn't have a perspective what we could train for
because no competition was really on the schedule, everything was rescheduled.
We all know that uncertainty is not nice and for an athlete who has a clear goal and it's
hard when this or that competition gets cancelled or postponed and the goals kind of break away
and then you ask yourself, what am I doing here, what am I training for?
I think it's really important to have some comps again, to have a real fixed focus that
you train for and then you have to perform on that day.
The first big goal is in June, so the focus is definitely on gaining some endurance and
keeping the power that I've gained during winter.
We try to push him into on-site climbing, also when he climbs a route here that he hasn't
climbed before that he focuses and tries to do his best on the first try, which is
the most important thing in elite climbing.
That's the hardest for all the climbers and I think all of them can improve and that's
something we focus on with Matthias and also that he is diverse in his style, that he can
adapt to different problems or styles in route setting so that he's very open for new developments
especially.
Well today I did more like projects that I have maybe one or two rests, so I can send
them in a few tries.
In the beginning you have to work on the moves and you have to look how can I climb efficiently,
where can I clip, where can I rest in order to not waste any energy and then you just
try to send the route.
A lot of the development in competitions comes from route setting actually, so climbers have
to adapt to the modern style of route setting.
Bouldering influences the elite discipline and we find boulder elements or moves or parts
in routes, so climbers have to be more diverse, they have to be good boulders, to be good
elite climbers.
It's perfect for bouldering because we have those colour boulders where you can just look
and every colour has a different grade which is really nice for training if you just want
to try some boulders.
Then we have another part with these comp boulders, that you always have some comp boulders
with jumps and slabs and stuff and then we have our training wall with all the wooden
holds where you can just train power and we have an app so we can always look up some
boulders that someone set.
I've always had some problems with my back and also my legs, last year I wasn't able
to heel hook because my knee was hurting, so I'm training a lot of core with my physio
to improve my core stability, my leg stability, to try to prevent injuries.
The first big competition this year is in Innsbruck, it's the World Cup in Innsbruck
in June.
I'm definitely training for that one, super looking forward to climbing in my hometown,
unfortunately without people watching, but it's definitely going to be a big show.
