AI GeneratedNine-year-old bass prodigy Ellen shares her musical journey, her practice routine, and her inspirations. The segment features surprise appearances by funk legend Bootsy Collins and members of Earth, Wind & Fire, who praise her talent and encourage her to continue her musical journey.
Even though my next guest is only nine years old, she's already being called a child prodigy for her mad, mad skills on the bass.
Oh my goodness, man. Please welcome Ellen.
Now, you've developed some serious skills in a short amount of time. How did you learn to play?
Well, I used Musician, an app called Musician. My dad taught me my hand positions and I learned the songs with Musician.
Does your dad play bass?
No, he plays guitar.
Oh, okay. So how often do you practice?
Most of the time, two hours a day.
And you go to school the rest of the time?
Well, I start school at 9 o'clock and I end school at 3.21.
Know the exact time.
3.21. That was me too. I was sitting there just looking at that clock.
I just need a bell to ring to take me out of my misery.
Who are some of your favorite bass players?
Bootsy Collins.
Wait, hold on, hold on. Who?
Bootsy Collins.
Bootsy Collins?
Yeah.
Oh, Bootsy, baby.
Who sang?
That was when we were in...
Bootsy was...
The number one.
Bootsy, you better hear me, girl. Bootsy Collins is bad, man.
Do you have a favorite song you like to play?
I like to play Earth, Wind & Fire, September.
You better shut up, girl.
You better shut up.
Ellen, don't play with me.
You playing with me?
Bootsy Collins and Earth, Wind & Fire.
You finna make me cry.
Shut up, Ellen. You what? What?
How did you find out about Bootsy Collins?
My dad.
Your dad. Oh, your dad. That's the soul man over there.
How'd you find out about Earth, Wind & Fire?
Your dad.
Just go on and answer the question.
So look, you ready to show us what you got?
Yeah.
You gonna play something for us today?
Come on, let's go, Ellen.
Yeah.
That's right.
She knows how to do it.
You were pumping that thing.
I got surprised that he's one of the greatest bass players of all time.
He's a funk legend.
He out of Nashville, Tennessee.
One of my dudes.
Grew up listening to this cat.
Brought me through college.
Say hello to my man, Bootsy Collins.
What's up? Love you, baby.
Oh, man. I love you, baby.
What's up, Bootsy?
Oh, everything's on the one.
Everything's on the one.
I'm so glad to be in the house with you and my girl, Ellen.
She is amazing.
Yeah.
Bootsy, can you believe she's nine years old?
Actually, yeah.
Because I started when I was nine years old or so.
You want to say anything to Bootsy?
Hi.
This a bad dude right here.
Rubber band.
This boy had a hit when I was in school.
He did this thing called,
My name is Bootsy.
And everybody said, Bootsy.
Boy, we was in the club all night long.
Bootsy, you don't even understand, man.
You're one of the main reasons I flunked out of college, man.
And I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Because I ain't have no business in there in the first place, man.
Hey, Bootsy.
You know for your flashy style and everything.
You got any fashion advice for Ellen?
Does she need a signature style or anything?
Just being herself.
With that smile.
And playing like she do.
She don't need nothing else.
Nothing to drink.
Hey, Bootsy.
Now, you got a new record out, man.
What's it like releasing an album nowadays during COVID?
Well, you know, us coming up from back in the day.
We always were used to being in the studio all together.
And I had to learn how to do things a little differently.
Like online.
Like we're doing this chat thing here online.
You can see me and I can see you.
But we were so used to being in the studio together.
So it was a whole different learning process.
Well, Bootsy.
Sit tight for a second.
Bootsy isn't the only one who wanted to give you a shout out today.
I got somebody else for you too.
Some old friends of mine.
Some dear, dear friends of mine.
We go back like Cadillac seats.
Nine time Grammy Award winning icons.
The one and only Philip Bailey.
Ralph Johnson.
Verdeen White.
Earth, Wind and Fire.
These my dudes right here, man.
This is Earth, Wind and Fire, man.
Amen.
And you know what?
We also went on YouTube and looked her up and saw her play it several times.
We were like, oh, bless your heart.
I love you.
So sweet.
Listen.
She was in the groove.
I mean, in the pocket.
You know, I'm telling you, we were like sitting here just naming off all the different things that we love about how she plays.
And that personality.
Oh my goodness.
You know what I would say was wrong with it?
What?
As the famous bass player Nathan East says, absolutely nothing.
Hey, Ellen.
See that dude with the white on?
You the only bass player got prettier hair than he got.
And you know, she's got to come to our concert too.
You want to go to a concert?
You got to come. You got to come.
Yeah, you got to come.
That boy right there and their brother, Maurice White, all of us were friends.
I've given them away their Lifetime Achievement Award on Soul Train BET.
They had me come down and put their handprints in the ground in front of the Guitar Center on Sunset Boulevard.
I wrote the forward to their brother's book, Keep Your Head to the Sky, Be Ever Wonderful.
I've been with these boys a long time.
I have listened to the That's the Way of the World album more times than anybody on planet Earth.
Boosie, Earth, Wind & Fire, two of my all-time favorite people, man.
I ain't gonna lie to y'all. These my dudes.
And Ellen, they came on all because you paid such a tribute to them.
And they really appreciate it.
What's so wonderful about what you're doing and how you're doing it?
You're having fun.
And it's resonating and everyone can feel it.
And continue your amazing journey in music. It's fantastic.
You're doing great.
Hey, Earth, Wind, you guys are headed out on tour, man. Where y'all going?
We're actually already on tour.
We're actually on tour. We're in a hotel. I'm not going to say where we are.
But yeah, we're in a hotel. We have a gig tonight.
So we'll be out here for a night, for a while.
So, you know, I follow y'all on Instagram.
But if you follow Earth, Wind & Fire, you can keep up with the tour.
They come into town. They still sound the same.
Them boys ain't never let go.
I want to thank y'all. Boosie Collins, thank you so much, man.
And also, man, are y'all re-releasing Can't Hide Love?
Yes. Brand new single with Lucky Day, produced by Babyface.
It's fantastic. Actually, it's one of our highest charting records in a long time.
We're really proud of it.
All right. I'll listen to it.
Ellen, thank you so much. Good luck to you. You're a sweetheart.
Thank you, Dad, Mom. Raising a great kid.
And a special thanks to my man, Boosie Collins.
All time. That dog on Earth, Wind & Fire.
