Massive Lost City Discovered in the Mountains of Uzbekistan

The lost Silk Road cities of Uzbekistan—Tugunbulak and Tashbulak—are two medieval urban centers situated at an altitude of approximately 2,000 meters that had all but vanished from the landscape.

This documentary explores why major urban hubs emerged amidst the cold mountains. Tugunbulak spans roughly 120 hectares, featuring defensive systems, ramparts, streets, residential areas, and production zones.

Drone-mounted LiDAR technology enabled archaeologists to detect traces of city walls and structures concealed by vegetation and sediment. Excavations have also uncovered kilns, ventilation shafts, metal slag, pottery, coins, and weaponry.

How did the inhabitants survive the winter? Did the cities sustain themselves through trade, metallurgy, or by controlling mountain routes? And why did they ultimately disappear?
