If you drove a truck in America between 1950 and 1990, you knew the sound before you knew the name. General Motors built the first Detroit Diesel two-stroke in 1938. Five million were built before the last one came off the line in 1995. The 6-71 powered the landing craft on D-Day and the Sherman tanks on the ground behind them. At peak, Detroit Diesel held forty percent of the American heavy-duty engine market. More than one in three Class 8 trucks on the interstate ran one.

Mechanics called them Green Leakers. Drivers called them Screaming Jimmies. But by 1995, every on-highway two-stroke engine was out of production.
