When the Strait of Hormuz closed during the conflict, oil and diesel prices rose as markets tried to judge how long the disruption would last. Futures may reflect hopes for an end to the fighting, but the price consumers ultimately face is tied to more than the crude oil benchmark.

The pressure may outlast the event that set it off. Even if oil prices respond quickly to signs of relief, the path back to more stable fuel costs remains harder to read.

Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, has more than three decades of experience in petroleum markets. He joins us to examine what oil prices alone do not show about diesel costs, including what they can mean for home heating bills and the movement of goods. The same pressure could complicate the outlook for inflation and interest rates.
