Charles Chaplin Sr., born in 1863, was a successful music-hall singer and performer. Hannah Chaplin, born in 1865 and known professionally as Lily Harley, was also a singer and character comedienne. They married in 1885, but their relationship did not last, and they separated when Charlie was still very young. Charles Sr. struggled with alcoholism and died in 1901 at only 38 years old.
Born in London on April 16, 1889, Charlie grew up surrounded by both performance and hardship. His mother became one of the strongest influences on his imagination and performing style, but her declining health and periods of hospitalization left Charlie and his brother Sydney facing extreme poverty and time in institutions for poor children. Charlie eventually followed his parents onto the stage, joining the Eight Lancashire Lads before beginning the journey that would turn him into a global cinema icon.
From Victorian music halls and London poverty to the creation of the Little Tramp, Hollywood stardom, The Kid, City Lights, Modern Times and The Great Dictator, Chaplin transformed experiences from his childhood into comedy understood across languages and generations. He died on December 25, 1977, but his character and films remain among the most recognizable images in cinema history.
