Old Meets New: Inside a Stunning Earth House Transformation

Florinda House is a 123-square-meter renovation in Loja, Ecuador, completed in 2026 by Alvariño & Felipe Arquitectos. The project transforms a ruined traditional earthen house into a contemporary home while preserving its rammed-earth walls, tiled roof, and relationship with the surrounding landscape. New interventions, including an expanded living area, a compact rear service volume, and lightweight steel mezzanines, improve functionality without overwhelming the original structure. Exposed earth walls, white surfaces, and natural light complete the balance between vernacular character and contemporary living.
