Trump rolls out the red carpet for Xi. But who holds the leverage?
Donald Trump has rolled out the red carpet for Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington, but behind the extraordinary display of friendship, the United States and China remain divided over some of the world's biggest geopolitical and economic issues.
Trump and Xi are discussing trade, Taiwan, Iran, artificial intelligence and China's dominance of critical mineral supply chains. The two countries have extended their trade truce until January, buying more time to negotiate a broader agreement.
Could Beijing use cooperation over Iran as leverage over US arms sales to Taiwan? Can Washington reduce its dependence on Chinese rare earths? And despite Trump's repeated emphasis on his personal relationship with Xi, can the world's two most powerful rivals find lasting areas of cooperation?
DW speaks with Edgard Kagan from the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a former senior US diplomat with extensive experience in the Indo-Pacific, about what Trump and Xi want from the summit, and which country believes time is on its side.
