SpaceX’s New Starship HLS Leg Interior to Land Humans on the Moon for the First Time!
Starship is not ready to land on the Moon!
And landing legs are a huge problem.
If you look at the Starship concepts released over the years, you'll find numerous different landing-leg designs. Yet SpaceX has never officially confirmed any of them as the final configuration.
But the more difficult the problem, the more interesting it becomes.
Recently, a new landing-leg concept was revealed. Although it wasn't created by SpaceX itself, the design is particularly interesting because it could potentially fit the requirements of Starship HLS.
Before we get into that design, though, you need to understand why landing legs have become such a difficult problem for SpaceX and Elon Musk.

Or, to put it another way:
How do you keep a spacecraft standing upright when it's roughly 50 meters tall, carrying hundreds of tons of hardware, and landing on an uneven surface?
The basic physics is straightforward. When engineers think about landing stability, three factors matter most: how far the landing feet extend from the vehicle's centerline, where the center of gravity sits, and how many points are supporting the vehicle.
Think about standing on your own feet. If you bring your feet close together, it becomes much easier to lose your balance. Spread them apart, and you create a much wider support footprint. The same principle applies to Starship.

But Starship HLS has a major disadvantage compared with the Apollo Lunar Module: its enormous height.
A vehicle this tall naturally creates a much more demanding stability problem, especially when the center of gravity remains relatively high above the lunar surface. And some early Starship HLS concepts have shown landing legs that appear relatively short compared with the overall height of the spacecraft.
That matters because the Moon doesn't provide a perfectly prepared landing pad.
