It is one of the most medieval cities in Russia, where the authentic Western European medieval environment has been best preserved: a 13th-century castle, narrow cobblestone streets, Gothic houses from the 16th century, and an atmosphere found nowhere else in the country.

Vyborg is situated in the western part of the Karelian Isthmus, 120 km nortwest from St. Petersburg and 30 km east of the Finnish border. The nearest Finnish city is Lappeenranta.
