Pierre, a French fugitive wanted for murder, lands illegally in post-war Genoa, trying to escape his past. In a trattoria, he meets Marta, a waitress, and her young daughter, Cecchina. But their hope for happiness is threatened by her jealous ex-husband and the shadow of Pierre's crime, leading to an inevitable, tragic end.
