White Chuck Mountain Scramble – A North Cascades Classic

White Chuck Mountain is a remote summit deep in the North Cascades southeast of Darrington. A high-clearance vehicle gets you to nearly 5,000 feet and an unmarked trailhead. The first stretch is a gift: an easy forested ridge trail with meadows opening to glimpses of the peak ahead. Then the character changes dramatically — this isn't a hike, it's a negotiation with the mountain. Scrambling and route-finding become essential as you traverse exposed, loose-rock-strewn slabs along the top of sheer cliffs. After a final crux move, the summit — lofty peaks ghosting in and out of clouds, earned in four miles and given on the mountain's terms.
