Black and White Photography - "Trevor Cole" The Toposa of Eastern Equatoria | Featured Artist
Trevor Cole was born in the City of Derry, but has lived most of his life outside the bounds of Ireland; in England, Singapore, Togo, Italy, Ethiopia and Brazil.
In his own words, "Capturing inimitable moments today to reflect upon tomorrow. My own 'take' as a geographer photographer!"
His photography, together with travel, has become two of his lifes passions. His photography focuses predominantly on culture and landscapes; images which reflect a spatial and temporal journey through life and which try to convey a need to live in a more sustainable world.
Cole seeks the moment and the light in whatever context he finds myself and endeavours to use his photographic acumen to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.
In Trevor’s own words: “We visited remote Topossa villages two hours north on a road which was truly dire. An African massage as you are bounced off seats and thrown in every direction!
The Toposa were welcoming and have wonderful villages with beautifully constructed houses, stilted granaries and like the Laarim their compounds are clean. Watching them grind sorghum and cook over fires highlights the degree to which we are privileged in life.
The woman are adorned with beaded skirts and collars of beads around their necks. Their faces are frequently scarified with small keloidal bumps. Again they entertained with incredible dancing and when they dance it is with body, mind and spirit. They have created, over time, ancient rhythms which connect them to community and the earth itself.
We contributed salt, tobacco and spices as a gesture of goodwill which is much more sustainable than paying individuals for images.”
