A study published in September 2026 may finally solve one of Göbekli Tepe's oldest puzzles: where the site's scattered human bones came from.

For thirty years, archaeologists at Göbekli Tepe in south-eastern Türkiye collected 928 loose pieces of human bone from the great stone enclosures, but found almost no graves. Some researchers suspected a skull cult. Now the first two Stone Age graves found intact at the site suggest a simpler answer. Many of those bones probably came from people buried under the floors of their homes, higher up the hill, and were carried down into the monuments by landslides.
