I'm in the Capitol building holding our International Summit Against Human Trafficking with the
great group Galedo and our CPAC Center for Combating Human Trafficking.
Matt, what's been your impression so far?
We've had these incredible speakers, both Americans, Mexican officials.
What's been your take from this?
What's great is I just talked to a young lawyer from Mexico, and she was just telling me that
they just recovered a child in Brazil, so you get to hear the stories of them finding
these people in modern-day slavery and giving them their freedom back.
The people in this room are real heroes.
We have a lot of victims and survivors in the room, so the takeaway to me is these human
stories.
They rip your heart out.
Yeah, and it's really fascinating to listen to the local officials say how they were able
to achieve known cases of human trafficking in many of these Mexican cities.
One mayor in particular talked about the importance of training and to be vigilant, to know what
are the signs in finding these human trafficking cases.
What's your sense about what comes next?
As we know, CPAC did this successfully with criminal justice reform.
How are we going to get that model to work now with human trafficking?
One of the big things we keep talking about, it's not about politics.
It's about humanity, bringing Democrats and Republicans to get this done.
Yeah, I think that's right.
I think people mostly associate maybe even partisan politics with CPAC, and the truth
is we're willing to work with anybody who shares our values and legislative outcomes.
When it comes to criminal justice reform, it's one of the very few areas where left
and right seem to be able to come together, maybe for different reasons.
We're hopeful that human trafficking is another topic where left and right can come together.
We kind of maybe leave the partisan politics for other moments, and in this one, let's
go save the kids.
Yeah, and we've had great leaders come through.
Congresswoman Laurel Lee, Congressman Chris Smith, who talked about this piece of legislation.
Where do we know those 85,000 children?
Where did they end up, those across the border?
We can't find them.
We have a responsibility in this country to make sure that we can save these children
that have gone missing, and also the American children that are being sex trafficked.
People think that it's an international problem, but it's really an American problem as well.
Yeah, and I think Marshall Blackburn has a bill to do DNA testing on everybody who's
at the border so we can really track people.
It seems like one of the many things the government doesn't do well is protect kids coming over
the border.
There's all kinds of compassionate language, but talk is cheap.
What's really happening to these kids?
Who's making sure that they're being respected?
And when you have these outrageous numbers of kids being victimized, it also reminds
each of us that if you see something that just seems not right, that seems odd with
a minor, go ask an authority.
Go ask law enforcement to check it out, because what we've also heard today is you'd be surprised
how many times all of us are seeing a child in public who is essentially a slave and all
they need is for someone to get a cop involved.
And so I know at the CPAC Center for Combating Human Trafficking, we're going to be reviewing
these federal pieces of legislation.
We're actually going into the states to advocate and make sure we have the right laws in place
to stop human trafficking, to make sure that these children have a safe place to go as
well, because that's part of it too.
It's about protecting these children and making sure they're able to restore their lives once again.
Yes, absolutely.
We've got a lot of work to do.
We hope you'll join us on this very important cause of saving God's children and combating
human trafficking.
And we're really excited about our new center and I know that so many of you have reached
out to us saying you want to help and we need your help.
Yes.
Thank you all for watching and there's a lot more to come.
God bless.
