In the 1850s, British engineers building the Lahore–Multan railway crushed 4,000-year-old bricks from a Punjabi village called Harappa and laid them under the tracks. They didn't know they were destroying one of the greatest cities of the ancient world. Punjab isn't where history touched South Asia. It's where it began.
Ask Punjabis where their ancestors came from and you'll hear Aryans, Scythians, Rajputs, Arabia, Persia — always somewhere else. The DNA says otherwise. The 2019 Rakhigarhi genome, the first from an Indus Valley city, showed a woman of about 4,500 years ago carrying early Iranian-related ancestry plus Ancient Ancestral South Indian ancestry, and no steppe ancestry at all. The single largest part of modern Punjabi ancestry matches that Indus-related foundation. The Bronze Age steppe layer is real — among the strongest in South Asia, arriving about 4,000 to 3,500 years ago mostly through men, with R1a-Z93 common in Jat, Khatri and Brahmin families — but it is still a minority. Punjabi maternal lineages are overwhelmingly local. Farming here goes back to Mehrgarh, thousands of years before Harappa, and the people stayed after the cities faded. The Rigveda's "land of seven rivers" names Punjab's own rivers. Alexander fought Porus on the Jhelum, but left no large Greek genetic layer. The Jat–Scythian theory points more to the Bronze Age wave than a separate invasion. Sandhu, Gill, Cheema and Bajwa are shared by Sikhs and Muslims; Khatri names like Kapoor and Khanna carry Punjab's merchant history. In 1947 about ten million people crossed the new border — yet Indian and Pakistani Punjabis are genetically almost identical. We also cover Guru Nanak, the Khalsa, lactase persistence and Punjab's dairy culture, Indus traders found in Central Asia, and the Punjabi Mexican families of California. The real genetic origin of Punjab is Punjab itself.
