Gildas was one of the most important writers to emerge from post-Roman Britain and one of the few surviving voices from an age surrounded by uncertainty. Probably writing during the sixth century, he lived in a Britain transformed by the end of Roman rule, political fragmentation, warfare, and the growing presence of Anglo-Saxon communities. His famous work, De Excidio et Conquestu Britanniae—On the Ruin and Conquest of Britain—offers a rare glimpse into this turbulent period, combining historical narrative with a fierce religious condemnation of the rulers and clergy of his own time.
