Building a Huge White Oak Parametric Wall With a Hidden Door

In this video I build a large white oak parametric wall for some family friends who were finishing their new home. The idea behind the wall was to create a flowing three dimensional surface inspired by the wind and water around their property, while still keeping the design clean enough that it would not compete with the view out the front of the house. I started by building a small test section to figure out how the shapes would work and how I could actually build everything, then designed the full wall and worked through the process of milling, shaping, sanding, finishing, and installing all of the individual pieces. Some of the flowing sections continue onto a recessed wall and become shelves, which added another layer to the design and construction. The biggest challenge was building a hidden door directly into the middle of the wall so that the pattern could continue across it and the door would nearly disappear when closed. There were a lot of small details to figure out along the way, from building the door itself to making jigs, fitting the hinges, and getting everything aligned during the final installation. This was one of the most unusual woodworking projects I have taken on, and it was a fun challenge to turn the original idea into something that actually worked in the finished space.
