The Substrate That Lasts For Decades
In this video, Father Fish explains the science behind long-term nutrient cycling in a natural aquarium. Plant roots, fungi, microorganisms, volcanic minerals, dolomite, clay, biochar, fish waste, decaying leaves, and organic detritus all play a role in creating a living substrate that changes as the aquarium matures.
You'll learn how plant roots help keep microscopic channels open in the substrate, how biological acids slowly weather minerals from rock, and why dolomite provides a long-term source of calcium and magnesium while helping prevent the substrate from becoming increasingly acidic.
Father Fish also explains what happens after the original amendments such as urea and blood meal are consumed. Instead of depending permanently on those initial nutrients, a mature natural aquarium begins recycling fish waste, plant material, and organic detritus back into nutrients that plants can use.
After several years, this biological cycle can turn the substrate into what Father Fish describes as a perpetual bioreactor—a living system in which nutrients are continually processed, recycled, and returned to the plants.
If you've wondered how natural aquarium substrate works, whether planted aquarium soil eventually runs out of nutrients, or how a dirted aquarium can support plants for many years, this video explores the biological and geological processes behind it.
Lou Foxwell, known as Father Fish, is a pioneer of natural aquarium keeping and the creator of the Father Fish Method.
His approach to planted aquariums focuses on building balanced, self-sustaining ecosystems using soil substrates, natural processes, and minimal maintenance. The Father Fish Method draws inspiration from the Walstad Method and the natural aquarium philosophy of Takashi Amano.
Before entering the aquarium industry, Lou spent 25 years as a missionary, serving a congregation of deaf worshipers. He later opened a tropical fish store, where he adopted the role of Father Fish.
His passion for fishkeeping began in childhood, inspired by his grandmother from Berlin, Germany. He went on to become a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, where he helped shape its early development and leadership.
With decades of experience across the fishkeeping world, Father Fish shares practical knowledge on planted aquariums, dirt substrate systems, and natural ecosystem balance. He also provides plants, soil supplements, and tools to help hobbyists create thriving aquariums with less effort and fewer water changes.
