AI GeneratedA medical resident documents the grueling experience of a 72-hour window involving two 24-hour call shifts separated by a single post-call day. Despite the physical exhaustion, sleep deprivation, and stress, the resident finds the experience deeply rewarding after successfully delivering two babies and performing repairs.
What time is it? 2 in the morning.
Me, before my first 24 hour call shift.
I delivered two babies.
Good morning everybody.
It is 7...18...am.
I always do this. I have to leave in 12 minutes.
And I just woke up.
And I'm just, I'm so confused about what's going on.
I gotta stop doing this.
I am about to have the busiest 72 hours of my life.
I'm on 24 hour call, and then I have a conference the day after,
and then I'm on 24 hour call again.
Oh my gosh.
So how a call works is that the resident that's on call for Friday
is also the one on Sunday, so you always do the Friday-Sunday.
24 hours working Friday, post call day Saturday,
24 hour call day Sunday, post call Monday.
And it's just, it's brutal. Oh my gosh.
And there's this conference slash...
It's more like lectures than anything, which is good,
because I'll probably be dead inside that I signed up for a while ago
that I didn't realize fell on the Saturday, like my one post call day.
So yeah, I have no idea how I'm going to manage this,
but we have no choice.
So welcome to a very, very, very, very, very busy 72 hours of my life.
Last night was the worst sleep I had in a really long time,
and because I've been on call so much,
like my skin...
The camera's not doing it justice, y'all.
My skin looks horrible.
Can we be honest? It's freaking me out.
It's tanking my self-confidence.
So I'm just going to very quickly conceal it.
I'm already stressed at work.
I can't be out here looking like this too.
It's kind of just like unfathomable how we're supposed to work this much.
And obviously I'm speaking from a place of privilege.
I know my surgery residents, my IM residents,
all of these baddies.
God, you'll work like a dog.
I don't know how you guys do it.
And I have so much respect for you.
Every time I'm on off-service, like I'm working on another rotation,
I want to go back to family.
I miss it.
I'm like, oh my God, bring me home.
Okay, so I'm going to bring all of this.
Who knows if I use it? We got to go, y'all.
The newest thing that I did my last call shift is that I brought my own blanket.
I felt like I slept better because I had a piece of home with me.
This. Girl, I bring my own pillowcase too.
I don't care anymore.
Extra underwear.
Socks.
Scrub cap.
My new scrub jacket.
And this should be good.
A bunch of my tech gear in case I have time to do YouTube stuff.
Another non-negotiable sleep mask.
You need this. You need this.
If I get to sleep, please.
Current Reed Stoner.
John Williams.
So excited about this book. You guys keep raving about it.
My toiletries.
Okay.
What else, Yang?
Actually packed the lunch this time.
Chicken cutlets, rice, type of meat.
It's 7.33.
Handover is right at 8.
So I'm actually making pretty good time, but I want to go early,
so maybe I can grab a coffee beforehand.
All right, guys.
So this is me before my first 24-hour call shift.
Let's freaking do this.
Let's unpack my bag.
Garger.
Do you have this?
Damn it.
Double stock the pillows into my pillowcase.
Still in my sweats.
Let's change.
I've done this so many times that things are getting a little bit better,
so I have a little bit of downtime.
I...
Call is not a fashion show,
but I always work better when I feel like I look okay.
Gonna just try and freshen up a little bit,
because I do not feel good.
I don't even know. It's 7 o'clock.
You just blink and all the time goes by because you're so busy.
But let's just...
There must be some kind of blurring filter on this,
because you can't really see the gravity of this.
I'm sorry to complain about my skin so much,
but it's just, like, this hospital air and this lack of sleep
and this amount of work.
I have never looked like this in my life.
I'm so tired.
And I'm just gonna try and be horizontal for a bit
until I have to go back and check on everything.
Now, look.
As much as I love these compression socks,
like, my calves are so big that they leave the craziest imprints.
Oh, my gosh.
It's time to change my socks.
All right, so it's time to do a little bit of work.
I may have graduated from medical school,
but unfortunately, the studying did not graduate with me.
In residency, we don't really have scheduled exams every few months
like we did in school,
but we recently did this practice
that basically shows different areas that we need to work on.
And mine needs a little bit of work,
especially my musculoskeletal section,
which is very much so in the red.
So I've been trying to squeeze in some studying
between physically being at work
and also doing all of my YouTube stuff.
And that brings us to Grammarly,
who is kindly sponsoring this part of the video.
So Superhuman Go from the makers of Grammarly
is the academic sidekick that helps you understand concepts,
plan and improve your writing,
and study with confidence
while keeping your work your own across all of your browsers.
So while I'm studying this MSK section,
I can use AI Chat right where I'm already reading
and ask it something really specific,
like comparing all the different shoulder conditions
I keep mixing up based on their history
and their physical exam findings.
And then I can even ask it to turn what I'm reading
into clinical scenarios to quiz me,
which is way more helpful for how I actually study.
And then outside of medicine,
I'm constantly writing YouTube scripts and briefs.
One feature I actually found really interesting is authorship.
You can turn on track your work in Google Docs
and it keeps track of where your writing came from,
what you actually type, what was pasted in,
and what was edited.
So especially now when it can be hard to tell
how something was actually written,
you have a transparent record of your whole writing process.

And now, back to Sabon call.
What time is it?
Two in the morning?
Who knows at this point.
Okay, you know what it's time for?
Okay, I had to move it to a different cup,
but it's quite good.
I have that conference tomorrow.
Well, no, it's just like a bunch of lectures tomorrow.
I already paid for it,
but I have a really good feeling I'm not gonna get any sleep
and it's a full day.
So...
Well, guys, you can see I'm still here.
It's nearly noon.
Guess where I'm not?
The conference.
Why?
Because I used my brain.
Why would I go?
Now we're gonna spend a post-call day like you should,
and it's rest day.
I've lost the plot.
What is this hustle universe?
What am I doing?
Let's relax.
I'm hungry.
Let's make some food.
Nutritious and delicious.
Doctor's orders.
I was calling because I was having a freakout
because I was gonna attend this conference,
and then I entered psychosis,
and then I was like, you know what?
I'm not gonna do that.
9.30?
I don't know how people do it.
How you have a call on Friday,
and then Saturday I sleep during the day,
and then I wake up at night,
and then I won't call again.
That's for today.
I wasn't supposed to sleep that long.
I just woke up, and it's 5 p.m.,
and I wanted to be outside before it got dark again,
and the house is a mess.
Also this Jamaican place that I wanted to try.
Everybody's wearing my clothes,
and they both have stickers in there like everybody does,
but it's the case.
It's so cute.
It tastes like a yummy Gatorade.
It's good.
Hi, guys.
It's currently Saturday night, Sunday morning.
It's 1.30.
It's almost 2 a.m.,
and here I am wide awake,
and I'm going to put my hair into overnight heatless curls.
So this vlog might be a bit of a mess organizationally,
but I felt like it would be good insight
into life in residency.
I try and romanticize it as much as possible,
but it's so busy,
and I'm tired all the time,
and this Friday-Sunday call shift is brutal.
So it feels like I was just on call,
and that's because I was.
I was there for 25 hours.
The crazy thing is that I felt like a zombie
all of today and Saturday,
and guess what?
I have to do it all again tomorrow.
So tomorrow I'm going to be working another 24-25-hour call shift,
and then I'm going to be off on Monday again,
and I just feel like this is ruining my body.
My skin is the worst that it has ever been in a long time.
My eye bags are huge,
and I literally felt just like a shell of myself today
while I was trying to recover.
I definitely feel so much better now that my family came.
It was so nice having them over,
and my mom helped me clean.
Okay, can I just say that it sucks?
This Friday-Sunday call business is not fun.
It's not fun, and I'm a little bit miserable,
but, you know, we got to do it.
It's part of the job,
and I'm always just trying to take it hour by hour at 3 a.m.,
and all I have to do is get through 4 a.m.,
get through 5 a.m., 6 a.m., and all that stuff,
and I'm going to do it again tomorrow.
I really need to zen out, okay?
Anyway, and the reason that I'm up so late
is that I just have sleep-wake rehearsal at this point
because I've conditioned my body to be awake at these hours
when I'm on call,
and now it's like,
how do I expect myself to sleep under these conditions?
Whatever.
Girls, we just got to do it again.
Sometimes you don't have a choice.
We're just going to have to do it again.
We're going to push through this damn call shift.
We're going to come out the other end.
It's late.
Let's do it.
Let's see.
It's crazier than I thought it was going to be,
but you know what?
Let's give her a second.
Okay.
I'm feeling good.
That's a lot of grapes.
Today, I'm going to be working again for 25 hours straight.
Let's go and kill it.
Oh my gosh, you guys, we did it.
What a mess.
Anyway, let's do a deezy while I eat this bagel.
Diabolical order, but I was hungry.
Cheddar jalapeno, smoked salmon cream cheese,
smoked salmon, capers, red onion.
It's like a weird box bagel.
Guys, that pretty much concludes this vlog.
I can't believe we did it.
24-hour call, break, 24-hour call, and we did it,
and we are finally done.
The obstetrics vlog, this was my best shift yet.
I had such a great staff,
and I was able to really get in there and do the deliveries myself.
I delivered two babies over the 24 hours,
and I did the repair.
It was awesome.
It was so much fun.
It was such great learning,
and I felt like I really contributed, yes,
which is such an amazing feeling.
Busy but rewarding.
I feel like I complained a lot about the call,
but when the call goes well, it feels really good.
It feels really rewarding,
and I actually feel like a doctor,
which freaking feels awesome.
Yay.
That's everything.
Thank you so much for watching,
and I'll see you in the next one.
Bye.
