In Japan’s Zao Mountains, trees can become covered in thick layers of snow and ice during winter, creating incredible formations known as “Snow Monsters” or Juhyo. 🏔️❄️
Strong winter winds blow snow onto the trees, while ice continues to build up around their branches until they look like giant frozen creatures. 😱
When winter arrives, the entire landscape can look like something from another world. 👀✨
But how do these trees turn into giant snow monsters? 🤔
Watch until the end to see how this incredible natural phenomenon forms! 🇯🇵❄️
Imagine looking across a Japanese mountain and seeing hundreds of giant creatures standing in
the snow. They look frozen, they look alive, and some of them are so large that they almost
look like something from a fantasy movie. But these aren't monsters. They're trees.
Every winter, in the mountains of northern Japan, trees are transformed into strange,
towering figures made of ice and snow. And the strange part? This only happens when a very
specific combination of weather conditions comes together. So how does a normal forest turn into a
landscape full of giant snow monsters? This strange landscape can be found in the Zao Mountain Range
in Japan's Tohoku region. One of the most famous places to see it is Zao Onsen in Yamagata
Prefecture. During winter, the upper slopes of the mountain can look completely different from
an ordinary forest. Instead of seeing clear tree branches, you see enormous white and gray shapes
covering the landscape. The Japanese name for these formations is jūhyō. It can be translated
roughly as frost-covered trees. But visitors often call them something much more dramatic,
snow monsters. And once you see them, it's easy to understand why. The trees can become
so heavily covered that their original shapes are almost impossible to recognize.
So how does this happen? It starts with the weather. Zao receives extremely cold winter winds,
including air coming from Siberia. As these winds move through the mountains, they carry
tiny droplets of water. At high altitude, the temperatures are low enough for these droplets
to freeze when they hit the trees. And this is where the transformation begins. Layer by layer,
ice builds up on the branches. Then snow begins to accumulate on top of the ice. More freezing
water arrives. More snow sticks. And the process repeats again and again. Eventually, the small
branches disappear beneath layer after layer of frozen material. The tree becomes wider,
then taller, and stranger. What started as an ordinary tree can eventually look like a giant
creature standing in the middle of a frozen landscape. But there's another reason these
trees look so unusual. The ice doesn't simply fall straight down. Wind plays a huge role.
The freezing droplets and snow are repeatedly pushed against the trees by strong winter winds.
As more material accumulates, the formations grow in particular directions.
This creates strange shapes. Some look like animals. Some look like people. Others look
like giant creatures from another world. And because every tree is exposed to slightly
different conditions, no two snow monsters look exactly the same. That means the landscape is
constantly changing. A storm can reshape them. New snow can make them larger. And when temperatures
rise, they begin to disappear. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the snow monsters is that
they are temporary. They don't stay like this throughout the year. The phenomenon usually
begins developing during winter, and the formations reach their most impressive size around February
to mid-March. Then spring arrives. Temperatures slowly rise. The snow and ice begin to melt.
And the giant figures gradually lose their strange shapes. The monsters disappear,
and the trees return. So every year, nature creates this incredible landscape from scratch.
And every year, it eventually disappears. So the next time you see a picture of Japan's famous
snow monsters, remember that you're not looking at giant creatures. You're looking at ordinary
trees transformed by an extraordinary combination of wind, freezing water, snow, and altitude.
For a few months each year, the mountains of Zao become a completely different world.
A world where trees look like monsters, and nature creates something that almost looks impossible.
There are still so many strange and fascinating places waiting to be discovered.
