Video Summary
AI GeneratedHadrian continues the \"Glory of Rome\" series in Civilization VI, focusing on expanding Roman territory through strategic sieges and city management. Despite facing strong defenses and competition from Spain, he employs a split-army strategy to capture multiple cities and optimizes his empire's infrastructure and technology to maintain a competitive edge.
Hello, Legion. This is Hadrian. Thank you for being here.
Let's play some more Sid Meier's Civilization VI
in our Glory of Rome series.
I had a few people telling me on the last episode,
you should split up your massive army
and start conquering more than one city at once.
And I certainly intend to do that this episode and next.
We have a little area up here that will be very,
very accommodating for that kind of strategy.
We have to finish conquering this city,
but then we're probably going to try
and take Hanover and Odense at once.
And then once we kind of have that,
it'll be easy to just kind of move across
two cities at a time, including to Paris.
So not necessarily getting to Paris in this episode,
but that's that general strategy
that's been recommended a few times by a few different commenters
is what we are going to be pursuing starting now.
Let's move into turn 221.
Looks like we've had a spy incident, but not successful.
France was trying to steal a tech boost. Who's surprised?
Okay, so a little bit of damage being done to my invading forces here.
Ooh, let's see what happens here.
Alright, that unit survived, but we're gonna have to get them out.
Pikemen getting hit. Yeah, this is gonna start getting rough.
Ah, damn, they didn't survive. Okay, lost that horseman.
If that was a horseman, no. It'll be okay.
All right, this is gonna take a little bit of effort,
because this city's pretty well defended.
They're across a river. They've got an encampment here.
It's not like we're in a terrible position.
We just have to move quickly
and disable their walls as quickly as we can.
All right, speaking of that, where is my battering ram? It's up here.
Actually need to get that. Wow. All right.
Um, hmm, what would
be the best way to do this?
Let me go ahead and move this pikeman.
I'm a little, well, first, tell you what.
Now let's damage that knight with the encampment.
We have another knight up here that can't
do anything yet, but we'll be able to soon.
Let's go ahead and move this knight all the way up.
Well, that knight, that would make
that knight vulnerable to that encampment, so that would
be pretty dangerous.
I'll wait to make that move.
Oh boy, um, suddenly tough decisions.
Um, here's what I think.
I am going to go ahead and have this pikeman attack.
We need to eliminate those knights.
Try and whittle down her army in the area.
Could attack... let's go ahead and swap these guys.
Of course, I can't fire with these guys this turn.
Swap these guys. Still fire here, so that's useful.
Let's go ahead and take care of that.
And I think I will go ahead and do some damage to these knights here,
so that they don't have as much attack power elsewhere.
And then I can move these guys.
Hmm.
Major defeat if I move that legion.
So let me go ahead and just fortify that legion.
Cocesium.
Oh good, they finished
their settler.
About time. Alright.
We'll come to that in a second.
We're gonna be settling more of upper,
of Northern Africa with that,
which is territory we of course have to capture
to get our objectives for this series.
So that's very, very good news.
I'm gonna go ahead and build a...
Wow, Leopolis is gonna take a long time to repair.
I'm gonna have to...
What I need to do is get a builder in here.
Once I have enough to buy one, maybe with gold.
and take care of that situation.
Yep, let's fortify that unit till healed.
It's gonna be next turn before they can start healing, but that's okay.
Yeah, you stay there.
Um...
Yeah, see, this unit's gonna get fired on this turn,
and they're not really that strong, so I'd rather keep them around.
And another thing I can do, of course, is...
We've got this knight here.
Let's go ahead and move that one up there.
And I can go ahead and start purchasing more units with faith,
like an additional catapult, for instance,
to roll straight up this direction, which I think would be a good idea.
It'll be vulnerable to that encampment,
but we've got to improve
our destructive capabilities in this region, period.
Mediolanum.
Oh, yes, this is our new trader for the Forbidden City,
so as much production as possible, please.
Trade with Massalia.
Still taking a while.
And another one.
Oh, nice, I forgot we had two more building.
All right, in that case, trade with Pola.
31 turns away, and of course, Mediolanum is on production focus,
so hopefully we'll get that done even faster if we keep pressing.
But let's see.
Oh, you know what?
I don't have my Roman City map open.
One second.
Not that
one.
Oh,
there
it
is.
I had some of the file list scrolled off the screen in a weird way,
so I couldn't actually see the file when it was ready to be loaded.
But yeah, now we can make sure that any city we name in this area...
There we go. Now we can make sure that any city we name
in this area can actually do its thing.
Now... or be the right city name, you know what I mean.
So, actually, yeah, Tingis would be there,
and that would be a pretty realistic settlement location.
It would be seven turns to get there,
unless I put the Settler in the water,
which I should have done, but now it's already on its way.
So we'll let that happen.
And I am, I think, going to move
this knight over here just for safekeeping,
so it's not vulnerable to that encampment.
And let's go to the next turn.
My taskbar was still showing
on top of the window.
That was kind of annoying.
So the encampment's firing on this catapult,
but the catapult should be able to fire on the encampment now.
Also, it looks like they've moved their crossbowman out,
which is good in the grand scheme,
and they didn't do any damage to these units over here, really,
which is also good.
Victoria has declared war on...
Really?
Victoria has declared war on the Congo.
I wonder if she has colonies down there.
Progress towards colonialism has advanced considerably.
Our new knowledge of the heavens.
Astronomy's much more fun when you're not an astronomer.
What does that mean? Astronomy's fun, period.
Uh, let's... yeah, let's keep doing damage to this encampment.
We can finally fire with the catapults, let's do that.
Alright, definitely going to eliminate these crossbowmen,
move these pikemen up.
So, some of these units on the front line here are going
to be in a little bit of danger until this situation improves.
But I'm okay with that. Let's get this across the river
and that'll be in firing range in a few turns
Once this city's taken again,
we're gonna split our forces and take two cities at once
But this is a little bit dicier right now until we can
It's just very well defended with that river being right down the
middle trying not to lose any units because we're gonna need them soon
Interesting. We are almost ready to research gunpowder.
Is there another I have a feeling there's yeah
See, I want to go for Big Ben as soon as possible
So let's queue that up so that we're running for it.
And that will give us, let's see, why don't we do this?
One, two, three, and then queue up Big Ben.
Because I want access to the Venetian Arsenal in the shipyard.
Cartography is good too, so we'll queue that up afterwards.
So we just queued up a long list of things that we want to research.
But it'll all be good, so let's eliminate that unit.
Stockholm just needs to make peace with me.
Or I need to make peace with Stockholm.
I don't think the city-state's going to initiate the process,
but they're not having a good time trying to fight me.
Actually, I can probably hit this unit with this crossbow
and get a little bit of experience, so let's do that.
Glorious.
Okay, that problem's resolved.
I'm going to try to move through this somewhat quickly,
because I guess I can just fortify you.
That's awesome, because they can heal a little bit.
I can also fortify you.
Maybe not this turn, but soon.
Hmm.
I suppose I'll move this unit down this direction
so that I have room to surround the city a little bit more.
I'm just trying to keep them away from this encampment.
for a little bit.
Nope, you just stay put right there and go
to the next turn. We're making a good amount of
civics per turn now, culture per turn,
so researching more civics per turn than we were before.
That's pretty nice. Congo has declared friendship with Arabia.
Arabia has declared friendship with Congo. Congo is expanding.
France has denounced England.
So they're finally pushing back against some more
of these guys closer to the city.
They didn't last turn for some silly reason.
Now they are. Really would like to eliminate
the walls on this encampment. Would be a win for me.
We need to get this knight out, which we should be able to do.
Russia, go away. I don't like you.
Stop what you're doing.
Good.
I can't get this knight out.
Very good.
Let's move him down here.
Hmm. What would be the best spot to put this knight?
Let's just bring him back here.
Won't be able to heal this turn, but soon enough, he will. And,
interesting, we actually have more knights coming in this direction
from her territory, so I'll have to be a little careful with that.
Let's see.
This is starting
to get pretty solid.
Let's... I'm gonna go ahead and move this pikeman up there
so that these knights can't come down the road.
They have to fight the pikemen and then we're gonna move
this catapult into position and hit these guys as hard as we can
We're gonna have these guys fortify
and then we'll use this crossbowman to hit
Or this crossbowman, this catapult rather.
Tell you what, I really don't want to
Let's move this knight over here because they're healed up
and let's move this catapult into position there
so they can fire on the city next turn
That'll make it easier to take the city fast.
Ooh, we can build Potala Palace here, but not here though
I'd rather not honestly. Housing problem, really?
I mean we could build a bath district there
But that would be pretty rough on production in that city.
We did the same thing to Mediolanum and it helped with housing
I mean I'm gonna have to do it given that I don't have
a lot of territory in the area right now
But are those focuses necessary right now?
Do I need both turned on? No, I can just turn them both off
I'll put you on food focus, you grow a little faster.
Not fast enough though
So I'll leave that as is and let's see what we can do.
Athens, you were trading with Rome. Resume that route please
Massalia, you know what I'm gonna just
temporarily I'm gonna move this trader
to Mediolanum as well because we need
as much production as possible for that
wonder. I'm nervous that it's taking 29 turns
so just need to really pile on the
production there.
Fortify, again they're not gonna fortify till the next turn but
it is what it is. I'll keep all this as is.
I think I like where my units are
relative to one another.
I don't have too many ranged units on the front lines.
Ah, son of a...
Alright, well, damn.
That was terrible, terrible timing.
And that was a really good location, too.
That was close to where we were going to put Tingis.
Spain finally grew some balls.
Let's colonize Northern Africa.
So we're going to have to deal with that as we go forward.
But Spain's next
on the agenda anyway.
So that sucks.
Our ability to expand in that area, or really expand at all right now,
short of war, just got curbed significantly.
Spain has been so anemic in their advance.
I really was not expecting them to do anything like that.
Okay, that sucks.
So this catapult's in range now,
but I'm going to have to move it out of range so it's safe.
And then I have to promote it.
Yes, I can promote it, but...
What's this?
Oh, rebels.
Yeah, I should have seen the rebels.
I was...
I saw them, but I wasn't acknowledging them.
Alright, so this catapult's now promotable.
I can give them extra combat strength when defending,
but the thing is, yeah, I've got
to switch these guys' positions.
It's the only way they'll be okay.
What?
What?
Grassland grass why can't I fire
with this catapult
on on the why can't I I don't see anything
That should be blocking me from hitting the city
from here. There's a river going there. Oh, I'm annoyed
I'm gonna go ahead and fire on this unit because I can
but I should be able to hit the city from here
And it's not letting me there are yeah, this is a grassland here.
This is a flat tile
I should be able to arc over it and hit it.
Well, that's part of my strategy now. That's blown. What the heck man?
I have no idea what's going on there all right,
so it looks like we're finally gonna be able to disable the encampment
Which will really accelerate our advance here.
We've spent 15 minutes this episode just trying to move in on this city
This is ridiculous. Why don't we?
Let's get this pikeman moved up here,
and this one moved up here,
and then I suppose soon ish
We'll be ready. I'm gonna go ahead and hit this.
This is one of my horsemen
So this is gonna make this unit
a little bit vulnerable, but it's okay again
we need to kind of get rid of some of the horsemen
to a certain extent. I've got 537 faith.
Certainly I can do stuff with that.
What would be the best thing to build into Anapons? Probably
more military units.
Let's go ahead and build another legion and then start firing on...
Oh good, we can fire. Get some more combat experience.
Maybe get a level 5 crossbowman
there. Maybe? You gonna be nice to me?
Nope, of course not. A quincum can build a new district.
Can also build Potala Palace, but let's see.
An encampment could be a good idea for production
reasons, but then again, so could the industrial zone.
Commercial hub for wealth and for additional
trade routes would be good. Why don't we go ahead
and put a commercial hub down right there in
Aquincum. That's a rapidly growing city.
Having a commercial zone there would be huge. Constantinople
can also build... Yeah, we're going to need an encampment here,
certainly. If I put one there,
that's actually a really good location
that'll help defend this entire area and help me advance
on Antilia. So we're going to build that right there,
and that'll help with production.
Constantinople, you need to be on food focus buddy,
but you're already growing pretty rapidly
and that would add five more turns to the encampment
So how about not and then buying a builder would
be 400 what gold 565 gold it's going up
All right, you move over here.
Just trying to scout out India's northern territory
I suppose and yeah, let's go ahead and trade with Corrales
and Mediolanum add a little bit more growth there
Now what else can we do here?
I can move this Legion around here
I suppose and start moving them up
this direction which we need to find a way to
We've got the city surrounded now,
which is good. Any damage we do to it,
we haven't done any damage to it yet,
but any damage we do to it will not be recovered. Can't heal anymore.
All right, so this crossbowman is gonna come up
from this direction, and yeah,
I guess I'll bring this knight around this way, too.
Try to surround the city a little bit more. Aquincum.
Yeah, just trade with Rome. Let's have you grow even faster.
And then this knight, yep, come over here. This settler,
I'm just gonna keep skipping their turn until
we can deal with Cordoba. We might have to declare war on France.
We don't have any military in the area, though. Ugh.
I'm so annoyed they settled that spot.
They really, really messed with me there.
Alright, so we lost the horsemen. Not the worst thing.
Now, this great general
is supporting units in this direction.
John Curtin!
Oh, hello!
I speak for the people of Australia as their Prime Minister.
What's he not expecting you?
I speak for the people of Australia as their Prime Minister.
We seek sympathetic allies in the fight against the hawks of war.
Alright, so John Curtin is down there.
Let's go ahead and exchange information on our capitals.
Here's John Curtin, in Sydney.
I actually need to be careful with exchanging information
on capitals with leaders that are far away,
because there might still be that bug that causes the map view to like,
zoom far away and not be recoverable.
It's really weird when it happens, but it does happen.
Alright, so this catapult is now actually ready for its promotion.
Let's go ahead and give them extra combat strength when defending,
because we're gonna be doing a lot of that.
Still can't fire on this city.
That is really pissing me off.
There's no reason I shouldn't be able to, but I can't.
And I can fire from here. I know I can, because I did before.
And somehow this district health has gone.
How has what is going on?
Yeah, the health on this this encampment has gone up
in spite of everything
So we're gonna have to keep plinking away at it with our crossbowmen
Our Legion core here has healed up and is ready to go
so we're gonna start moving them through the woods
Now this is more of a slog than I thought
it would be to tell you the truth
It's good that we're getting these other units in position
Let's get that guy there and go ahead
and move that Legion up that direction
You just start hitting the city
when you start hitting the city in the encampment all at once
It's these...
I mean, I've been talking about it for a few episodes now,
but there's just all these woods everywhere.
It's really crazy.
I'm going to go ahead and get some
builders going in my new areas down here.
Kastra, Dinagetia, you...
Oh, we need a new district too.
Let's go ahead and do...
Would a harbor be best?
I suppose.
Let's go ahead and do a harbor right there at that river delta.
Pella needs to grow.
It's a little heavy trade with Rome.
Interesting.
Yeah, just fortify that unit.
Have them take some hits.
No real attack necessary.
And yeah, we're starting to surround the city.
So we're doing all we can it's just it's just a slog man
All right, so that unit needs to fortify as does
this one any range damage they might try to do to my pikemen
I want to absorb and just get some
experience maybe level them up some more
Mediolanum, okay, we can switch this trader now
and trade with any number of places we trade with Carthage
We could trade with Tsaritsyn, which is a Russian city.
Carthage would be good for gold. Let's go ahead and do that
It's not gonna help Mediolanum grow,
but it will get gold in production more for that forbidden city
All right, we need to move this battering ram
into position probably next turn.
So we'll skip you for now. Put you on alert.
Skip your turn again and go to turn 226.
I underestimated the difficulty of taking this city for sure.
Again, once we get past like Hanover, there's still some woods.
It's still kind of rough terrain. All right, interesting.
This catapult is promotable again.
All right, France is starting to propose peace.
Did we lose our catapult? Yes, we did. Yes, we did.
We lost our catapult because they fired on it
with... now thankfully none of our other units got hurt,
and we can buy another catapult very quickly.
We can actually buy two more catapults with Faith,
but our catapults so far are not having a good time.
And once again, yeah, they focused on our catapults,
and they didn't really attack anything else.
All right, it is time to move...
I think what I need to do...
Here's what I'm gonna do.
I'm gonna move this catapult out until it's done healing.
I'm gonna move this crossbowman back.
They can still fire. That's all that matters.
I'm gonna move this Legion here.
I don't think they'll be able to attack this turn.
If they will, fantastic. I just... we'll see.
Oh, they can. Perfect. In that case, let's do it.
And that finally, finally, finally,
finally eliminates the encampment as a concern,
and we can move on taking the rest
of the city before the end of the episode.
Hopefully. We'll see.
I'm not convinced it's going to be that easy, but I'll try.
Let's fortify that unit until healed.
I don't want to lose any more catapults.
Then we can buy another one with faith in... let's go ahead
and buy it in Praga.
Catapult. We can buy it elsewhere as well.
We can buy them anywhere we want, really.
Yep, Fortify you up, and we can go ahead and continue positioning
our stronger units around the city here, including our pikemen.
Excellent. Alright, so we've got the city boxed in,
and this knight can ride up this direction.
We're gonna have the Legion take that position next turn, so.
This horseman, honestly,
I'm just gonna go ahead and delete the horseman.
The horsemen are being, are not that useful to me right now,
and I'd rather not have them taking up any kind of maintenance costs.
Again, they can't fortify until next turn. I can move this crossbowman.
Yeah, this crossbowman can't fire. Neither could the catapult.
Can't fire from here. It's very strange.
I'll go ahead and move this knight here then, and maybe next turn
the crossbowman will be able to fire from here, like it should be.
My mind is just blown. Maybe it's the die.
Maybe it can't fire over the die.
Yep, keep trading with Rome. Skip your turn and go to the next one.
All right, so that's gonna change the game significantly now
that we finally have this Legion Corps on the way into this city.
They can hit the battering ram, use the battering ram,
knock down the walls pretty rapidly.
And this is one of the strongest cities in the area.
Hanover's also pretty strong, but they're fighting barbarians, I think.
So by all means, deal with your barbarian problem.
Firing on the legion there.
Interesting choice.
Yeah, I guess they're firing on the units
that pose the most threat, but I can fortify
those units, and it can take a good bit more damage, I think.
No, you don't get to make demands, Spain.
Are you kidding me?
Look at this.
Look at Spain.
Why would...
Why?
Why would you even consider...
Ooh, that's quite a trade deal.
Three luxury resources that I have extra of, gold per turn, a lump sum
of gold, and an additional luxury resource that I don't have.
Sure, you're far away, I'm never going to fight you, so I will gladly
give you additional luxury resources to help you with your ends.
Not a problem, John Curtin. Or should I say Iron Curtain?
A diplomat is a man who always remembers a woman's birthday,
but never remembers her age.
Alright, so now I have access to the four different main cast
castle types from the... what age is this?
from the renaissance age and now we get to choose
a new civic i could go for exploration which would
give pastures additional food
which i think i'm going to do that i'm going to go for this just
for the food bonus but then humanism is an obvious next choice
because of that culture bonus we're
actually starting to get somewhat into the late game
so i'm gonna have to stay on top of things
let's, I'm gonna go ahead and buy a watt here just
so we have the benefits of some different building
types from different religions we will eventually convert
this back to our religion but i think it's
good to have some different building types where possible.
And then Minsk can also build another
new... let's go ahead and build a bath district here,
because there are places where it's easier
to get away with it. Put it on top of the woods,
and then yeah, we're gonna have you just fortify.
One thing I could do, I could have had them wreck
that and get some health back, but should be okay
regardless. Okay, moment of truth. Let's go ahead and attack.
Interesting, they're actually, with
the battering ram on their side,
they're not going to do as much damage as I thought they would.
It's gonna take a little bit more effort. This catapult is ready,
but we can't we're not gonna be able to fire from the pasture
Here as we've discussed so I'll go ahead
and move this catapult up and I do need to hit the walls
Let's go ahead and do that. I guess because they have yeah,
they have musket men now defending their units
That's gonna be a little bit more painful.
I'm gonna fortify these pikemen. So we need to research musket men
I suppose was that a tech that we skipped over?
No, we've got it next it's coming right after banking
So that's that's we're on the way major victory
if I attack let's go ahead and do that next turn
I may be able... Actually, you know what? Hang on.
Staying still, mate.
I might be able to this turn if I go ahead and just
wear the city down. Because that's a decent amount
of wall damage. How much would the knights do?
Yeah, I can. So, one.
I can't with that. Why can't
I attack with that unit? Because I fortified them
already? Ah, crap. Alright, well that
backfired like hell. I didn't realize I
already fortified them. So...
Damn. There's no way I can get that knight
in in time. So I just want to keep them fortified
until healed. So they're going to be able to do one more
round of damage to me, but then, yeah, we can
we should be able to take the city.
Let's move this knight here, move this catapult here.
I can't move you either.
All right, fine. Let's
Yep, fortify that unit till healed.
This one can come right here and fire on the city.
Oh perfect, that actually will eliminate the walls.
All right, that fixed that problem. Okay, we're at the 30-minute mark.
I'm gonna go- no, it didn't fix that problem.
The city still has walls. He lied to me again.
As far as the combat estimate. I know it's just an estimate,
but that wasn't a decisive victory thing that time.
That was just, I was seeing that it would eliminate
the last of the walls and I got really excited.
But we're at the 30-minute mark, so I'm gonna go ahead
and stop this one here, and the next one we are going to take
Frankfurt-sur-Oder, or however you pronounce that,
and then go ahead and hit Hannover and
Odense, hopefully a little bit faster.
This encampment will cause a little bit of a problem,
but we've got some good units in the area,
and hopefully we'll be able to do some promotions pretty soon.
I'm gonna save up gold so I can do a lot of musketman promotions,
and that should accelerate the rate at which we're moving across
France's territory here. So thanks for watching.
