Suvi from the Grounded Permaculture gives a walkthrough of his food forest, explaining how a once-bare hill has been planted and developed over about five years.

He describes a staged approach that starts with pioneer “mulch plants” like sugarcane, arrowroot, and bananas to rapidly cover ground, generate large amounts of biomass, and build soil and moisture-holding capacity, with cassava, taro, and cocoa yam as key carbohydrate crops.

As the system establishes, he spaces in fruit trees and other edible plants, highlights the role of canopy in buffering heat, frost, and creating microclimates, and shares strategies for canopy management including ring-barking large branches to increase light without damaging the understory.

He also discusses windbreak and bank-stabilizing plants, and demonstrates practical sugarcane management for mulch, animal pressure, and easy propagation.
