An investigation into one of the world’s most famous ocean currents — the Gulf Stream — with a detour through the Bermuda Triangle and a spotlight on the floating ecosystem of the Sargasso Sea. The Gulf Stream is a powerful ocean current originating in the Caribbean.

Francis Le Guen’s team sets out to understand what drives these waters, as the current is also a vast natural conveyor. These furious waters, pushed back by the Mexican coast, have no choice but to swirl within the Gulf of Mexico before escaping eastward, slipping between Cuba and Florida. At that point, the sea surface rises 70 centimeters higher than elsewhere, and the current carries 25 times the combined flow of all the world’s rivers.

The expedition then heads north, to the island of Bermuda — where the Gulf Stream veers off, leaving the Americas behind to continue its journey toward Europe.
