Marco Rubio Meets Venezuelan Opposition Leader to Discuss Democratic Transition

Secretary of State Marco Rubio meets with Venezuelan opposition leader Nora Figueroa to discuss the country’s transition toward democracy. Rubio says Venezuela has an opportunity to establish lasting democratic institutions, while emphasizing the need for free and fair elections and continued progress on political reforms.

Figueroa says the roadmap toward democracy will require continued work and U.S. support. Meanwhile, Venezuela’s government plans to expand its energy sector, with officials aiming to increase oil production to 1.5 million barrels per day by the end of 2027.
