Without Guardrails, Ai Could Pose a Grave Threat

AI experts are delivering a clear message: the risks of quickly evolving frontier AI capabilities pose serious threats to our safety and the future of our society. We must heed their call — and quickly.

AI agents have colluded, escaped their “sandboxes,” hacked other companies, meddled with government portals — and that’s just the ones we know about. The past month alone has exposed how public admissions are just the tip of the iceberg.

But the White House’s solution is to ask AI companies to “self-police.”

We’ve tried that before, and it’s failed before, with countless other industries. AI industry leaders themselves have been clear about the need for federal safeguards. As I’ve said before, unenforceable voluntary commitments and self-regulation will not cut it.

As these models become more advanced, and as they gain the ability to advance themselves, we may have less and less of a sense of what they’re doing, how they’re “thinking,” and whether they’ve gone rogue. That is a national security concern of the highest order, as well as a threat on many other levels to everyday consumers, workers, and society. The need for enforceable guardrails from Congress is undeniable, and I will continue demanding that we act.

This week, I talked to The Verge’s @DecoderPod with Nilay Patel about these risks and what my AI priorities are in Congress — check it out here.
