It is a story that bridges the worlds of Irish history and English literature. Thomas Langlois Lefroy, an Irish lawyer, is widely believed to have inspired the character of Mr. Darcy in Jane Austen’s beloved novel Pride and Prejudice.
Lefroy spent his later years at Carrigglas Manor in County Longford, Ireland, dying in 1869. His youthful acquaintance with Austen has fuelled speculation for generations, inspiring the enduring romantic legend that he was the real-life inspiration behind one of literature’s most celebrated characters.
