Lou Foxwell, known as Father Fish, is a pioneer of natural aquarium keeping and the creator of the Father Fish Method.
His approach to planted aquariums focuses on building balanced, self-sustaining ecosystems using soil substrates, natural processes, and minimal maintenance. The Father Fish Method draws inspiration from the Walstad Method and the natural aquarium philosophy of Takashi Amano.
Before entering the aquarium industry, Lou spent 25 years as a missionary, serving a congregation of deaf worshipers. He later opened a tropical fish store, where he adopted the role of Father Fish.
His passion for fishkeeping began in childhood, inspired by his grandmother from Berlin, Germany. He went on to become a founder and original board member of the National Aquarium, where he helped shape its early development and leadership.
With decades of experience across the fishkeeping world, Father Fish shares practical knowledge on planted aquariums, dirt substrate systems, and natural ecosystem balance. He also provides plants, soil supplements, and tools to help hobbyists create thriving aquariums with less effort and fewer water changes.
All clips and images are used for illustration purposes only. Learn how the natural aquarium approach changed the hobby forever. This video explores the foundational book behind the method.
So,
let
me
Pin
it.
Fish, I'm late.
Hello, hello.
Rebecca.
Happy birthday.
I'm John Shane.
And who's this?
Jenny.
Happy to see you at AquaShop.
All seven of my aquariums are Father Christmas style.
It was delighted, delightful to see you too, Jennifer.
We certainly had a good time.
Michael, hello from the UK.
Hey, Corinna, the rest is here.
Let's see.
I need to see if I can do this, play his birthday.
I should have played that as the start for the DVD.
I don't know.
I'm kind of dangerously screwed up this morning.
Okay, let's get rid of that.
I got to double check myself here now
because I'm in a mode where I do things thoughtlessly
and it winds up being the absolute worst in the world to do.
the wrenches
yet. Vegas
Platties. Hello, Vegas Platties.
Good there. What I was gonna
try to do,
maybe get
Darisha's birthday song
up. If I can find, there we go.
I don't know where he put it exactly.
Probably in
here it is. Right.
Let's see.
Do-do-do-do-do.
What's my do? This is.
Things are a little weak
and screwed up this morning.
So just bear with me, you don't mind
Trying to get something together here soon
So,
well,
thank
you,
Dura
It was just like
I've got a strange echo
Thank you, Dura
It was just like
that's in that
I think I may not survive tomorrow
Ah, getting wacky here
Find where we are
And I'm gonna get in gear
We're gonna make it all
Make it all happen
We get a lot of happy birthdays
Cumberland Creek hello hello good to see you sorry I
was late this morning I have been struggling with
with ever since the trip of keeping going stopped going
for a little while there I think I'm okay
now let's see uh one of the things
that was interesting I probably made as you'll see
one of the strongest statements for natural aquarium
that I probably have ever made and
Of course, I did it in the midst of the major manufacturers,
and I was putting it out over a mic that reached the entire hall.
I didn't get any feedback, particularly.
I don't know that there was any impact.
It was a remarkable experience being able to speak to the very people.
I think I said it.
I think I said the industry has destroyed the hobby.
I think I used just exactly those words.
So, you know,
Aqua Show is not likely to have me back.
They depend on those big guys to really make the show.
Frankly, I don't think they do.
I don't think they do for anyone, really.
For one thing, they're not there selling product.
They're there doing identity politics, if you will.
You know, they're there to shake hands and say hello to people.
maybe give out a gift name recognition
that's what they're there for name recognition now
they do put their product line out you can see it
and talk about it and i'm sure there are people
who are interested in doing that but they put up
major displays wonderful it's amazing displays
so i can't remember which one it was that had
on one side of an entire aisle it was like six
bays long the whole thing spread out full of all
their product just really really amazing so
that's a big part of it i'm sure they spent a lot
of money on these shows and the crowd was great
and it was a big crowd i'm sure it
was 10,000 there there people came from not just New York
in New Jersey. They came from Massachusetts,
from Virginia, from West Virginia, from Philadelphia,
from Pennsylvania, from Maryland, Delaware.
They came from all over the entire region,
which is really, really remarkable.
That was a wonderful thing to see, too. And to have so many
people come up and say it's Father Judge and get their picture taken.
We bought this little machine
that makes printed pictures that i'm able to uh to autograph
and we did that we charged five dollars
for it which is kind of a nominal fee
but it helped us to pay for the paper and the ink we sold
easily 20 probably more probably 25 or 30. uh it
was that was pretty impressive i estimated that
there were roughly ten percent that might have
been a little high actually but about ten percent
of the people who walked by recognized
the name father judge said well that's that's ten out of a
hundred a hundred out of a thousand a thousand out of ten thousand
and there were probably a thousand
people who came up wanted to shake hands say hello
um and and talk a little bit about their experience
so it was pretty steady there was not a time very very short breaks
of time where we did not have
somebody at the booth taking a picture buying
a person getting a book we took we took four boxes
of books up and sold out we could have sold another box probably
so that was exciting too
By the way, those of you who have ordered
the autographed copy of the book and not yet received it,
we did finally get
the last autographs from Timbuktu.
They arrived in the mail Friday, I believe, or Thursday.
So we will be getting those books out to you this week.
And I apologize for the delay.
It takes a long time to get mail out
of anywhere else in the world to here.
I mean, a long time, like a month or more.
It used to be a lot better.
It's really a lot worse than it ever used to be.
Yeah, right.
There we go.
We have a guy in here.
Look at this.
Well, thank you all for coming in.
I've had my feet tangled up most of the morning just trying
to figure out how to get up and how to get going.
But anyway, here we are.
Anyone who would like to come up
and chat is more than welcome to do so.
Please do feel free to do so.
I was looking to see Cinnamon.
She is sick and was not able to attend our show.
So that was a real loss.
So we would love to have seen her.
I hope you're feeling better, Cinnamon.
I hope things are really improving for you.
let's say I'm trying
to think
of something
well it'll come
to me oh what else
we're going to redo
our web page um I talked to uh super cyclists
a wonderful store just in Dover Delaware with uh
really amazing owners they they uh they're very online savvy
so they're going to help us get
some things get some things together there
and see if we can't make our our shop look a little
better and be easier easier to to navigate just
as we were leaving last night i uh a couple of
people came by if you heard that michael lobello
at uh michael was on my live stream early on
when we were in Florida
his owner of the Tampa Bay Society
he showed up in my
shop before it was a shop
one day
and he was
like he Michael had
a presence about him
that just overwhelmed the room
he had a powerful presence
and it was one of joy
joy at being there
joy at meeting everyone
and it filled everyone
else's
else's hearts he was an amazing man delightful man
um and a man who i got to know not better
than most as well as most again his whole life
was uh was tropical fish was the hobby and friends
he had a big fish room but more importantly he he had
a heart for for fish people for the clubs
for the camaraderie, for going out and collecting,
for just being part of that whole scene.
And it was amazing.
He was the primary auctioneer.
Whatever club he attended, he would attend as many as he could.
He regularly attended four different clubs,
kind of one a week throughout the month,
and was the auctioneer for all of them.
and just had so many little jibes and comments
and ways of doing things that really were a lot of fun.
So we will miss Michael.
Michael was a presence, a vigorous and powerful presence,
and he certainly will be missed.
That's the third club member I've lost in, I guess, two years.
Chuck Eidelberg, who was a dear friend
and very close to me in our club in Venice, passed about a month ago.
And Bill, before him, Bill Presley,
passed about a year ago.
Excuse me.
Let's see if we have it.
We wish you 100 years.
Let's see.
Let's get on YouTube.
I can read these easier.
Right.
Well,
darn it.
you know what's it's really strange the way
this thing works i wonder there are a lot of comments
i'm not seeing that are in my shopify i don't
really understand apparently the way the system
works you got to be careful man i'm pushing buttons again apparently
the way the system
works is see yeah it does it's
um it creates huh it creates two
streams or rather yeah creates
two streams two separate streams on youtube one
one for uh landscape and one for portrait for
computer or tablet and the other for a phone
and what that does it means you have to bring
both of them up in order to be able to see all
the comments that our morning stream is all about
well it's all about you
so it's all about the you know giving people a chance to to chat and
interface not only to chat with each other
but now right now we have about 15 people each and
one online and one in the uh i mean one
on computer laptop and the other on uh on cell phone
and you guys don't get to talk with each other
and i can't i can't separate that i mean it's
it's strange it's like i don't know why they
do it i certainly didn't select for that uh although
maybe there is a button somewhere i can push
that i'm going to start pushing buttons again
not everybody called christian that's all it's
on his phone good morning christian who says Boston
austin and the NCE micro fish escaped
his 10 gallon a few days ago i spotted him in the
windowsill about an hour
and a half i ran i can't find him try to get him back in his tank
a crazy animal
that's funny i had uh tasso tasso
Hart Tasso Hart Tasso Hart Hello
Tasso Hart nice to see you
who else is here austin uh sweet sweet rev wish you a hundred years
fish fan link uh no lot no no lad
Nolan Charles, there it is, good morning Nolan
and Zephar Nolan top chat
and do I have the link here? I don't, let me put
the link in this one as well, maybe I can do it
you know, let's see what comes up, one of you
control V, uh-huh, there, and now I find it and I
will pin it, all right
let's jump back over to go
in and get everything up
for you, maybe we don't
I don't know, it just pinned the live
stream again, I think I would pin
my comment now, that's or did
that happen? I guess there haven't
been any other comments in here
well whatever, John Shane, hello John
thank you so much, yeah 86 today and I think
I'm slowing down, I feel like I'm slowing down
so I don't mind the speed, I just uh I just want
to be able to keep going, that's all you
uh your YouTube, of your computer, go to YouTube Studio
and click the create button top recorder
then select go live, well I'm live
well yeah that's, I know I can
do that and I can go live instantly
which is uh and we did that for the uh for our talk
yesterday about the cello i'm i'm live on
StreamYard i use that because it's got some features that i like
and it just makes it makes
it better to be able to bring people up and do it
and do intros and all of that sort of stuff so
so i tend to now i'm sorry there must
be a button that allows you to only only uh
how does how does it know the difference between what people
were holding i can't imagine that
the technology is that sophisticated
to be able sending out a signal to know what
signal to send out or does it send them both
and the only one i've met who knows it's so it's not
on my level of capability
in a sense at retro south you're
a legend austin needs
help bad austin
okay well i had some children bring in uh some
bullfrogs two of them escaped we managed to catch
one the other one we didn't catch we did get it the next day
which amazed me that it survived the
day um they had to stay moist
and there was no water for them beginning to but they managed to
to make it and survive
and we got them back in the in their container the morning friends
Eduardo from Christian, Peplum Creek,
Rebecca, we said hello, is that the end?
Peplum, Peplum, Peplum, Peplum, Jazzy Eyes.
Now, let's see if we can find Jazzy Eyes
and give Jazzy Eyes a wrench home.
I don't know which one I'm, you know, there it is, right there.
Hi, how are you?
I'm good, Jazzy Eyes, thank you.
Let's see if we can get you a wrench here.
Well, that's odd.
According to this, we have one.
try this again oh there's another
one manda manda cl ad moderator
okay we got manda now let's see
if we can get jazzy eyes uh there
we go we got you baby clicking
and then there we go screaming
austin in your store
austin sorry explain how
to do this and uh okay
wishing you a happy healthy
year ahead well thank you
so much man awesome and looks like
dance doesn't it except it's spelled
wrong this will make it oh that will make it one stream
so if i oh yeah oh all right so if i open
it in if i create the uh string the stream
in youtube i'll only get one stream whereas creating
it in maybe is it broadcasting both i'll bet it
is i bet that's the issue i think i'm correct for
that think account so that makes sense
so that's where it's happening it's happening in StreamYard
i'm selecting both formats and StreamYard's
so so it's not YouTube at all it's StreamYard doing
that okay i'll have to check that and make sure
when i set up the stream for tomorrow that i
unclick that that'll make it easier for me
and i try to stay in the middle of the screen so i think
those of you who are watching on your
phone, won't have
any trouble with it.
Alright, I'm on the end. There it is.
And we've almost run out of time
just babbling.
Meaningless babble it is.
Well, it's nice to
meaningless babble with you all.
And it is a delight, in fact.
So, I need to get over to
the shop. I'm at home, obviously.
Need to get over to the shop.
By the way, I should
mention the pictures. There are three
pictures in here. The one further to your left
is a picture of my grandmother when she was married.
She was 18, and she was married in,
when was it now, about 2015.
I mean, 1915. She was married in
1915. Next to that is my father,
who was born to her two years later.
Two years later, he was the
oldest of three all of them are gone now uh
my uncle his brother lived to 94 so i've got i'm
i'm on the heels of somebody who really had some longevity
and the other is the cat what we would
call the cat Tom Tom the cat
um tom showed up where did he
come from? Yeah he he showed up
In Florida, when I moved into a double wide
and set up my first fish room in Florida,
someone found this little kitten full of fleas
and knew I was looking for a cat
and offered him to me, and I took him in and cleaned him up.
Tom was with me for about 15 years
and was just really a good and steady friend.
And he didn't go out much and didn't much care whether he did or not.
Generally, oh, now, wait a minute,
wait a minute, I'm getting mixed up here.
I'm thinking of his mother and him.
His mother was the stray.
She was a long-haired tabby, and she loved being outside.
That's what kind of made it click in my brain,
because I'm saying that about Tom, which is true.
But his mother, what was her name?
I don't think I remember.
anyway she she had to be outside she would see it
was a stray as a little tiny cat she was a
stray she much preferred being outdoors would dart out
the door every time it was open i took her to
a cattery and had her bred to a i think it was the lynx mix
so tom was a bigger cat he was a big
tom and tom lived in our shop for however long
the shop was open 12 years or so, 12 15 years
and was just a regular in the shop, we come visit everyone
to walk in the door wherever he was he
would come greet him, he never was a pest about it he
was very much the gentleman, liked to be petted
like to be touched, didn't mind being picked up
I had a woman come by one day who does
portraits for pets, and she did this one,
and then wrote a poem about it. I'll read the poem to you
maybe tomorrow. We're about out of time here
and I can't get a microphone over to there
and I don't want to take it off the wall and all that stuff
but I'll read the poem to you
at some point. The picture is frozen here
Why is the picture frozen? I don't know, but it is
If the picture is frozen,
that shouldn't matter.
Foxy sent flowers for 30 jewels
Thank you, Foxy
Happy to see you. Foxy, what is this?
Happy birthday, Father Fitch. Oh, I see. She sent
flowers for 30 jewels. Well, thank you
Engage with your audience. Why is that? What is this?
Why is there a one there?
Corporate horizontal thingy
That sounds complicated
Dual streaming orientation.
Yeah, I just realized that
That's exactly right
Thank you, Austin, very much
I'm going to do that because I really don't want two separate streams
to be able to chat with each other.
And frankly, that's one of the main reasons that one of the two,
can't say that if people come
and join us in the morning well i'm out of gas i've got to get going
uh i'm gonna run on i will plug in again
in the morning i promise to be here on time don't hold
me to that but i will make every effort
and i love you all i got everything good morning and
happy birthday from victoria texas this is jack
jacker 75 gallon tank probably about three years
So using your method,
and it continues pretty much maintenance-free ever since.
Pepland, you two wasn't very smart,
not moving the horizontal and vertical shafts.
And what's this? We've got comments here that aren't showing elsewhere.
Okay, we've got all the instructions there.
Mander, happy birthday. Thank you.
That was the show. It was spectacular.
and they gave me a chance to talk.
I didn't realize until the day before
that they had me on the list to speak
and that was fun
and I was absolutely on fire.
Probably the single best presentation
I have ever made.
It went about half an hour
and I was able to introduce Lucas
and get him up on stage with me,
Lucas Brett.
So that was a joy.
it was just really really wonderful
and one of the staff came by and said we need to get you
in chicago i said well pay my way i'm there be fun
to do um austin talking about how to have it not
having a light you can buy a light on amazon look
for led floodlight led outdoor floodlight
It's waterproof. It's plenty of light. Get
the 100 watt for anything above 39, 39 or a 50 watt.
Here's Brenda. Hi there. Hi. It's almost 10 o'clock.
Well, I just finished an hour live stream. My clock says.
I thought you went on at 10. I do.
Well, I got ahead of myself, didn't I?
started early oh my god I did it again I thought it
was late I I thought I was
late yeah I'm looking at my clock
and says 10 I looked at it and it said 10 an
hour ago I must have had my hand
but my wrist turned or something I can't lose
them like my well we got it we're done
now I'm just signing off all right so
I'll be there in a bit well
that was nutty I thought it was 10 o'clock like
I thought it was starting late, actually.
I thought it was 15, 20 minutes late.
Lord, talk about being witless.
Well, this is going to be the way it's going to be from here on.
We're all in big trouble.
Because you're not going to be able to depend on me for anything.
Austin just fixed it.
Tom was a good kitty.
He really was.
He was a really sweet cat.
And not all cats are sweet.
They really are.
you can also get deals on fish this is Jennifer Blatz
and Harts yeah Pebble and Creek do buy
through Pebble and Creek take a look at there oh we did get
a big bag I bought a big bag of plants
leftovers from lucas probably 200 that have his label
on them we're going to let them go for below
retail so we'll we'll put a bunch of them up
and it'll be kind of a grab bag but it's only going
gonna be a few bucks
so it'll be fun we can buy a bunch of save the whole playlist
goose bumpy melodies uh
talking about foxy's
playlist i expect go
to this jennifer's in
trouble finally it's always the last bell early
birthday stream yeah well can stream another hour

in my brain to do it uh besides i need
