Mark and Terry share a tour of their 10-acre property as they prepare for the upcoming winter. They discuss farm maintenance, animal care for their ponies, ducks, and chickens, and the seasonal transition during the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend.
Welcome to the 10 Acre Woods.
Mark and Terry here on this cool morning, 10 degrees.
So it was nice and warm yesterday.
I actually put on shorts and I put shorts again.
I thought it would be the same today, so I put shorts on.
So the leaves are falling. A lot of them are down.
It's coming. The cold weather is coming.
And Tara has gotten the farm, I think, complete.
Yeah.
I think we've got everything ready.
It's this time of year, it's like the mad rush to figure out
when everything's done and if everything's done.
And I think...
Am I ready for two feet of snow?
I think we've got it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And who knows when that's going to be.
It's supposed to be, what is it, El Nino or El Mino?
I don't know.
It's the warmer one, whichever.
I get the two children mixed up.
The one you guys in the States are getting.
Yeah.
so this is Thanksgiving weekend for Canada I know
our neighbors to the U.S. have it in November we
have it a little earlier
because of course it gets a little colder here we celebrate our harvest
sooner okay feeding the ponies this will be a
little bit better than last weekend I know I read
the comments and the uh the field of view
of those glasses camera camera glasses whatever you want to call
them are uh it's really tight so did you get any mice you got one
so it was kind of a roller coaster
last weekend so if i do that again oh that's
my height yeah it's your height it's not my height
this is another one of things the things that tara has done
to keep some snow out of the the walkway
here so if I do the camera glasses again
I will make sure I preview everything so
it looks much better and more stabilized
yeah well and I can understand yeah yeah
there was a couple shots when you
when you kissed Levi and when you kissed
Charlie it was cute
but definitely again a wider field of view is definitely
needed
for that okay
going out
coming up the
rear and I'm
gonna close
the gate oh
well yeah
are they both
okay Jordy just
got out of bed
yeah we were just
talking
yesterday about what we're gonna
do with these two do we just leave them in there
Or do we put them back in to the barn?
The barn is warmer. It doesn't go below freezing
Like how they're walking
Like a winter they don't walk anyway
So yeah, we'll have
to monitor them
figure out how how
they do and put
up another light
in here
So I got this one
So this this will give us lots of light when we're in here
Tiana does her evening feed and it can get pretty dark.
So that's a little addition to that. Oh
We have a project over down the road at our son's place
They're just saw a stick on the floor or on the ground that
Will work for that project
We also got our lights all hooked up in here as well.
So we hooked up our white Christmas lights
we got all that sorted yesterday we put some new lights
on the house so they
look great so there's some Govee strip lights
that introduce a little bit of
color to the to the Christmas winter
theme we can change them out to
different colors Oh Charlie look at you
are you sitting nicely yesterday it was
Sonny and
He was just hanging out just passed out in the middle of the yard.
All right, just wait for it, buddy
Yeah, I'm just getting some stuff.
There we go. You gotta wait got the routine
Posted a short
yesterday
of the pigeons
doing
their flyby
So they're doing their morning
Routine so nice
to see them out flying
around giving us
a little aerial show.
Oh the water
Oh, yeah, water management. I see that.
Well, we had a pipe that went across here
We took that out
to do a little bit more water management it seems
so we've got ducklings everywhere now
They've hit that age that they're all over the place
We've got some here we've got another mom
and a bunch of other ones back at the satellite
or satellite, sorry, the solar, the solar panels,
they're all out there. So they're growing up.
They're getting
bigger. Yeah.
Keep them inside.
Although they
don't listen,
they tend to go out.
It looks like Petey and Piper started their nest, their winter nest.
So that's where it's going to
be this year, which isn't so bad because they,
they made their nest over by the doorway last
year. Mama's coming.
You gotta wait.
Yes, you have to wait.
So impatient. Oh boy.
Charlie's waiting impatiently.
So yeah, inside
with the chicken area, what are
these plants? The main ones are mums, just for fun.
chrysanthemums, okay. You can see kind of plucking at them.
And then you've got some catnip in
there as well. I've got a bunch in the garden and I have so much.
But it's like our perennials gonna
make it through winter, you never know
right but if they're in here
no I was looking sorry I looked
and I was like
why is it
139 degrees
but there's
a decimal 13.9
so we're
also gonna try
putting some catnip
on the septic field before we cover it for the winter so
that'll be the last step once we get snow
in the forecast I think that's
probably when they'll
do they say to mow it down
so the catnip is where so I see
the mum oh along the edge
might have to add some more
I don't see any in there I
i do see some sprouts look at this yeah i know i keep adding
a little bit of water to it oh do you
yeah just to spread it up there in here where oh i see it it's
that one over there yeah it's the
far one
okay
that's fun
okay we got
everything
cut up
everybody's
got their
preference
turbo
over here passing all the grapes he did eat that one
though and that one okay he's he's getting a
liking for it now he says well i guess this is all there
is so i guess i have to eat the grapes
now we've got
a couple
ducklings
actually up in
the uh the upper
pond actually
that's the other
mum so that's the one that had four there
are two there last week we saw three so did she lose
another one or oh those ones are all going in did she lose another one
or did it migrate and move
off to the other clan this is one
thing we have to do as well before
winter sets in which we could
do within the next week or two is pull the pump out
and shut down the upper pond that'll drain
down go on in
kids mama's
calling get
the ones
that play
charlie
got his
vegetables
he's a happy
boy morning onyx tucker
and then got out the other day
and he had put it his head red spot
he got out where oh they got all both sides
the gate they busted the gate open again the gate
the gate yeah the
gate incident
where are we done
and we get
a little bit more
in here in the
shelter than we normally
do the duck door oh the duck door
yeah like this is all ready to go
well just closing off the end of the duck
shelter once the snow comes or the ice rain which is
huge when we have the days
of the ice rain they'll all be closed in because
that just gets that biting cold yeah right
and then they'll still be allowed to go
in and out as long as the pond is not frozen
but when the pond starts to
freeze then we'll close them in and I play it day by day right
because if it
happens to be a year of no snow then they could still go out
and graze but not near the pond
so i've got the electric fence ready to go if we need to you know
and i'm just like so possibly
putting up the temporary electric fence yeah just
from here to the corner so they can still
i'll see i play it by ear but as soon as the snow comes
and there's nothing to eat out there they
don't even come out
so they might as well close up and then
you know they're safe yeah yeah but
They're gone by the end of the day. So that's probably Petey.
There he is. So eat the favorite things
Oh George,
don't get eaten.
Always eat
the good stuff first,
right scouting
No, he walked by that one. No. Oh boy.
Okay once he figures out there's
nothing left. He'll probably eat that
Over there. Yeah,
so Tara's closed this area up.
So this is gonna be we
didn't use this in the past
for chickens. I think we might have thrown a few roosters out there.
So this is now their
winter enclosure. This used to be,
back a number of years ago, it was the two buildings. So they
were rabbit hutches and this was the second
and third building or second and third building that
was put on the property.
The first one being the chicken coop that we had.
And this was the boy run
and this was the girl run so or shelter
and then what we did is we gave them each side
for a run to have a little outdoor space
and then as time goes on we make modifications so
so now that'll be the roosters mainly Barry
yeah well and I was thinking about that too
putting the rabbits out into this shelter
because we can throw hay in there and they can come out
what we've done in the past is we've uh used
snow brought snow in and just do a pile of snow
and then they can that's what rabbits eat
in the winter they just munch on some snow so no bugs
today the last week has been horrible
for bugs i don't know what it's like where you live but they
tend to want to go towards the door
because it's obviously warm there are two types of bugs let me
just see if I can find oh there's one
so if you can see
that that is a a boxelder I believe it's
called is there another one around we can get up
and there's the other one is the the Asian
ladybug right there on the top yeah
they've just been all over the place
and let's see boxelder there so they've just
been all over there's toby got
his little nest
and oh i can see inside on the blinds there's actually
an asian ladybug in there as well
so they're all over and when we come in and out
of the door we've got the blower the leaf blower
So before we enter,
we actually have to grab the leaf blower and blow all the
bugs off the door.
So who else is having this same problem?
Okay, cat time. Can you
guess the cat?
This one is Nara
and this one is Rhea.
And then we
have Nick and
then Lucifer sleeping
on the couch. Lucifer, yeah,
getting some camera time.
Oh, no, it's a Nara. The other ones must
be downstairs or in sleeping with Sienna and
Aurora Aurora Eros and Zoria and of course Rhea.
I don't know Rhea's somewhere
He's not he usually sleeps over in here
and we have to you can see how dirty it is
That's Rhea's drool
We have to wash that regularly if we look at this one.
This one isn't as bad
He sleeps in there sometimes
Well, we've got to clean up so the we just did the lights
so this is the the Govee lights we put up
Put up a couple box
Oh the cat well, I'm seeing the clutter here
So we've got a new
dehydrator that Tara's going to use.
I picked up a light. That's the same light that's out
in the goose-duck area.
So I picked up two because they were cheap. They were on sale.
Tara's got her witch's brew pot for stainless steel.
Maybe that's what you put candy in for
Halloween. Yeah. And then random egg cartons.
I did some drone footage at the beginning of the
So that's my drone. I got to put away you got a fan.
That's broken that I'm trying to fix
I just yeah just life, right?
So that's it for this video,
hope you enjoyed it if you have any questions or anything
Please put them down in the comment section
