A 12 hour test of endurance in the wilderness. I travel 48 km by canoe and foot in 11.5hours. I cross Killarney Park west to east with no camping gear.
A solo canoeist completes a challenging 48-kilometer crossing of Killarney, navigating through rugged terrain, shallow creeks, and overgrown portages. Despite early concerns about rain and intense insect activity, the traveler leverages favorable winds to finish the journey in 11.5 hours, encountering diverse wildlife and navigating by map and cairns.
So I had momentary hope, you know?
Doesn't look too bad, other than that bug on the screen.
Didn't look too bad.
Then you look behind me.
It's just, that looks very, very bad.
Trying to go, trying to go.
Only like 10 more hours, you know?
I'm just boiling up some water
this morning
for breakfast before I head out.
It's 5:30.
I'll make it out there by like 5:45 or 6.
There's 16 hours of light in the day.
And I think I can get done around 8 o'clock tonight.
We'll see.
It's very windy outside, I can hear it rustling like crazy
But it's all going in my favor
Hopefully that doesn't screw me over on the big lakes
When I have to make a big water crossing
Or whatever, but we'll be alright
It's going to be a big push today
But I'm excited, that's what I came here for
I had a good night here at the Widgeon Lodge
And it means meeting place
It's a nice spot here, I had this whole cabin to myself
And I feel energized
And ready to freaking do it bud
Just came outside
and flipped my canoe
Look at the size of this spider compared to my finger
This is probably the biggest spider I've ever seen in the wild.
That is a monster.
Oh my god, he's big.
Get out of here.
Get out of here, dude.
He's so big.
That's a big spider.
That's a good start, right?
Buggy, buggy.
Okay, it's two minutes to six and I'm on the water.
So we're calling this a 6 a.m. departure time.
Try to get out into the wind and away from these bugs.
Today was supposed to be full sun.
No chance of rain.
it's not really looking like that right now
so while the wind is out my back that's a good thing
there's no blue sky over there and yeah being
that that this was supposed to be no rainfall sun
and that I was supposed to be gone in a day
and going full very light I have no rain gear and no
tarp so the weather can play the weather will play
a big role on how today goes the wind just stays
at my back and blows that'll be all right
but I don't want a thunderstorm out here or potentially
rain all day it's not warm enough
for that with no protection I do have my wind shirt that is
something but anyways we shall see starting off I'm
not going to turn back I'm going to turn back
already because of some weather man it's dark
man it's dark dang here comes the rain just
sprinkling right now but uh it sure looks like
it's gonna come down i could turn around i'm not
too far from the put-in but then that means i have
to get a shuttle back to my car another two hours
that way and i would not have done this thing
so i think i'm just gonna keep on at it and go through
the rain because i know i'll be done today
but uh it could be a couple degrees warmer i wouldn't
hate that but we're gonna do it this entrance
to the park is all full of cottages and stuff
i'm not in the park yet i've got a big paddle just
to even reach its borders but we'll be out
of these cottages and camps soon
and be on some pristine pristine looking lakes at least it looks
wild in there i love Killarney it's heavily used
don't get me wrong there's a lot of people who
visit there but mainly people stick to the access lakes
or a few lakes in there's still places in
there just like in Algonquin where you can go
and not see anybody for days so i had momentary hope
you know doesn't look too bad other than that bug
on the screen didn't look too bad then you look
behind me it's just that looks very very bad trying
to go trying to go only like 10 more hours
you know still no rain yet other than that sprinkle
and uh crossing my fingers but anyway
i've gone exactly one hour
and i've traveled seven kilometers no portaging yet the seven
kilometers an hour is a pretty decent clip i think i'm coming past
the last two little shacks
that are built uh because i think i'm
in the park now yeah it's still very dark very dark back there
i've
done 12
kilometers
in two
hours
i'm on my
first
portage
it is
buggy
it is
buggy
way
worse
than the algonquin trip by far all right here we
go college is a little overgrown i don't think
many people access the park from here there wasn't even
a portage sign not that it matters
there's a portage sign
on this side that's
a good sign well
with 12 kilometers
down i only have 34
more to go i need to get on to a big lake
these bugs are driving me crazy put my bug net on i
guess oh boy all right
on we go buggy joe well i just uh
trolled through murray here and i got to
the end and i was reeling it in because it's gonna
get shallow something hit pretty good oh dirty old
pike just
a little guy it's
not rock it's
not rocketed back
into the water
nice
and easy little
dirty porcupine it's okay you don't have to shoot
your quills at me bro no water you're good it
looked like i might have been blessed here dodged
a bullet with the rain we shall see this water is
like five inches
deep tops it's
a slow go we're bottoming
out now certainly
hardest it's been
today yet this is not a summertime trip
this is a spring trip where the water's
higher I might have to get out and pull
the canoe opens up a little bit more so
I can skirt through like this like this
yes keep it short-lived I can see where
it widens out up front it's maybe 300
meters it'd be hard to make in this
it'll be probably knee-deep muck pulling the canoe
and the shores are not really
accessible without getting stuck in the mud oh
boy yeah that's stinky that's very stinky come on
come on you can do it
it deepened out
ever so slightly i'm
holding the paddle
as wide apart
as i can has to make it just go super shallow it's not easy going
but it's better than it was
i can see the end though the end is in sight
that's the main thing um that is no kind of
beaver dam i've ever seen before what the heck
is this thing a little blair witchy if you ask me
i'm uh i don't know where i am i i'm supposed to be on a portage
and i just saw no portage sign
and through all this little beavery marshy area i've had
to pull over a couple beaver dams i
don't know i'm hoping that the sign is down here i
also have to backtrack and that's not good for my

Well, there's no portage sign here, but it looks like an opening
I'm gonna try it out
at least.
Yeah, I think this
is the portage
It's got to be like nobody uses it.
There's no signs of footprints. It's all super overgrown
I don't think anybody comes through here, especially that low water
was all dammed up probably changed in the last few years
or whatever last 10 years even it even says
on my Jeff's map that uh low water at the east end
of Murray May make it impassable impassable
to travel um especially later on in the year i figured it
was spring still but spring still
should be all right but that was about as shallow
as she can get before you have to walk but like
yeah this is this is
not used uh just not
looking like a trail
too much anymore
cool it was it was
the
right
portage
that's
a safe
for
sore
eyes
after
being
in a
creek
for
most
of the
day
already
we're going on just over four hours beautiful contours
on this lake big hills perfect sky winds
at my back out of the creek it didn't monsoon
on me all as well i've seen many animals today
already in that creek it was buggy
but it was also full of animals i saw two sandhill cranes
a porcupine right at the water i paddled up
to them um a big snapping turtle real close
a muskrat came up over the water real close
to me sure there was a beavers and lots of fish
yeah it was a cool cool experience nice
morning i'm uh four hours 15 minutes
into the day and I've done 21 kilometers so I think
I could have done this in a total of about 10 hours
and that'll be .7 kilometers portage
and I need to stop for supper at some point
and I'm making time up like crazy that wind
is blowing pretty strong on my back
it's poking out there are some dark clouds
but it doesn't look half as bad as
did
earlier
today
and just
like
that
back
into the
creek
we're
good
we're
good
no beef
no beef
fish lake
since it's
called
that also
because
i think
this is the
last lake
i'm allowed
to fish on
for most of the day now um on my map
on my map it says there's a fish sanctuary
on Green Mountain and David i believe i can't remember
which one but i know this is
i know i'm not allowed to fish for a while
on this trip if not before the rest of it so
throw it in a little deep diver see what we get
well fish lake produces just getting down the
start paddling again i'm
of brook's biggest one i've caught
this year
so or so all right that was fun
fish lake got a fish i'm
on a start to a portage i come up
and look what i see pretty pretty old
cabin hello with sterling old burrs
pretty run down pretty ravaged
probably pretty mousy i don't
think i'm going
in that one it's 10 to 1. we've
got over 30 kilometers
done well i'm on great
mountain lake that's the lake that i had booked uh
for a campsite just to have a campsite here
and um i plan on eating my supper here until before i moved
on but seeing as how it's 1 20
in the afternoon i don't think we'll be having supper pretty nice sight
though quite windy if
you want that in the spring for the bugs flat spots
for your tent good water access i think
I want to sit down here and have a drink of water, maybe I have a snack
then head on to the biggest
portage of the trip
of the day 2700 meters just right there, right
the big one 2700, it's a beautiful
forest at least to start off with, see what I think
at the end, big old hemlocks, a couple bugs
you know, well seeing as how this lake
is called Great Mountain Lake, I guess I can't be too
surprised, I'm walking straight uphill
on this portage, oh boy, slow going on the inclines that's
for sure, well we certainly have climbed, I'm still climbing, there's
a rock cairn showing the way
up on this bedrock now, shield looking
for the next cairn
or something, there is a flagging tape
right there, we
up here looks
like more rock
cairns here, yep
oh my calves
are burning
another
one down
there, I'm out onto David Lake now, it's
a pretty lake, nice sky, probably be one of the biggest
crossings I have today, it's
three o'clock now, I started
at six so that means
this is hour nine
and I've gone 39 kilometers already
so I only have seven or so kilometers to go, I'm down a
far ways on David and I got a series of a few portages
and then I come out at Bell, it'll still
be a little while but very pleased
with my progress i'm much farther ahead than i thought i'd be
and i don't even feel like stopping for supper i might depending
but i doubt it i've been snacking
i got jerky trail mix bars
gum today turned out a heck
of a lot better than it looked like at the
beginning I can keep going I'm starting to slow
down I can feel it but I can keep going it's one
big beaver dam
so we've gone
from the far west
point of Killarney
and now we're close
to the
takeout in the far east I've noticed
the portages have changed quite a bit there's boardwalks on
some of these and uh the ones out there
are a lot more rugged I'm almost at my takeout lake I'm
losing my voice I'm almost at my takeout lake I
think this is my last portage 20 to 5 I'm going
for 10 and a half hours
or so i've done 45 kilometers
so i should be near the end once
i get to the lake
ducks everywhere i
was wrong there's one
more portage of 300
and then i think
i'm at the car i think it portages into where i parked
my car if i'm not mistaken which i have
been mistaken once or twice
in life you know once or twice it
was right it's the first time for
everything
a lot more cars
than yesterday
when i dropped
my truck off 5
30 i went for 11
and a
half hours i did 48 kilometers i'm done
that was a big day happy to do it i did an 11 and a half
hours and i was able i could have done it in 16 i had 16 hours of light
but yeah i blew through that
pretty happy with that the worst black flies
the whole trip other than this morning was just now
at the car i brought in a bunch with me
and i ripped it up a little bit but no big deal i'm
off to go get supper probably wendy's
because that's on the way and uh try to get rid of these
black flies in my car hope you guys enjoyed
this video i had a good time i like this type of thing
but don't worry i will
do a slow paced canoe trip very soon thank you for watching goodbye
