Episode 2 of the Long-Term Wilderness Shelter Build Series In this episode of Building a Long-Term Wilderness Shelter, the real test begins.
A major blizzard moves in, bringing heavy snow, wind, and brutal winter conditions. With the weather closing in, it’s time to push forward and keep building. In Episode 2, I continue constructing the shelter while battling deep snow, freezing temperatures, and limited daylight.
This is about more than just building—it’s about problem solving, endurance, and making smart decisions when the conditions turn against you.
If you missed Episode 1, make sure to watch it first to see how the project started.

I know, eh bud?
It's
sort
of
wolfy.
What do you think, bud?
Got a
wall up.
Time to build a shelter.
Definitely
useful
now.
Necessary even.
There
should
be.
As much done
on our main wall
as we can.
The goal is to finish the main wall.
We got
the
same
tools
except
for
I brought the Agua 24 instead of the 21.
Just for the simple fact that I had a
better blade on it.
Cutting lots and lots of dead trees last time
and I had a
all-purpose blade instead of a
deadwood blade.
Got it correct this time.
Egor Gear is one
of the best outdoor companies
for bushcrafter slash like, I don't wanna say serious,
but like expedition type explorer,
tripper, adventurer, people.
See that one broken off at the top,
plumb down right about there.
Let's
go chop
that one.
Quite big at the base, but it's got the length that I need
and I can chop some off the base if need be.
It's not a big deal.
There's lots
of structural support
over there anyways.
When I start off, I'm basically trying to create
a cut all in line about halfway through the tree.
So my first cuts I'm going to do on the same side
and try to get in the same spot, roughly.
Not like that.
Like that, there,
and back here a couple times until it's in pretty deep.
Then I might switch to underneath, depending on the type of wood.
This is balsam fir again.
It's pretty easy to chop through.
I'm going to go on my knees for this one.
come from underneath,
do the same thing.
Try to make a line all
the way across.
Now most of that tree is gone.
I can switch sides and chop it with my ax,
or I can saw it and use this like a notch
like you would with a chainsaw.
Let's do that this time just
to see.
It's a bit more controlled that way too.
It's
gonna
fall
that
way.
Hopefully you get out of the way.
He's gone like he does.
I'm gonna cut like maybe half an inch to an inch
above
the apex
of the notch,
where the
notch meets
itself.
Kinda like,
you need
a measuring
stick
for the new pieces for the back wall.
But those pieces certainly don't have to be that long.
So let's figure out how long those back pieces
are gonna need to be.
The whole idea is the other, this side is gonna go up
and match those right around there.
I want it to be longer.
So I wanna take a foot and a half off the shortest one.
Hey Wolfie.
It's still
gonna
be very
long as far
as walls
for a lean-to type shelter.
So about a foot and a half.
Be safe right about there.
And the best part about this is that I get
like another 10 feet underneath that I can use
a big solid round log.
Get to sawing, get to sawing again.
Before
taking
this
dead
tree
down,
most of them that I've done, the smart move
is to clean off all the limbs.
If you want them off anyways while it's standing,
it's much easier, you don't have to flip it around
and try different sides and get it close to the ground
where your ax might go into the ground.
While it's standing, nice and easy 360 view,
at least as high as you can reach.
That one is pretty weak at the bottom,
but it'll still
be all right
for that back
wall.
With the growth form, easier than going against it,
but both ways work for sure,
and sometimes you have
to do what you have to do.
And that's the bottom line.
this one you got to do what Randall Pink Floyd wants
to do you got to do what Randall Pink Floyd
wants to do such a good move okay i stopped filming
for a little bit because like how many
times you gonna watch me haul wood over
but look at this in like a few like five ten minutes i
stopped filming look at this there's
no joke just getting peppered look
at and this guy good times
Hopefully the camera survives.
As
close
as
I
can
so
I
can
cut
off
all
the
tops
the
farmers
can
be.
Watch out buddy! Good boy.
It
looks
like
something.
Seems
a
bit!
On there much more, so I want to fix this step
so my foot doesn't accidentally not come out one time.
This is one of the pieces of the broken off
balsam firs that I'm using for my shelter.
That's the top of it, you can see where it would have broken off
in a windstorm however many years ago.
Enough to make it dead and very seasoned and good wood.
I'm gonna start that project using
this I might have to cut it down but this
should
be all
I need
for it
you
cut it
down I
apologize
if
there
is
water
droplets on the lens I'm trying to keep it clean
lots of snow
hitting it
my snowshoes
on or else I'd try
her out for you
but next
time we'll give it a whirl I got
to get up there like I said and do some roofing
roofing
putting
these
up
as a
mock
to
get a
feel
for
it
I'll
trim
them
up
after
Well, he found something we got
frozen deer droppings. They're
not chocolate covered raisins.
That's good. I guess
I'm just trying
to poke through I take
my hat off for a while
And then I need to put it back on because
my ears ears get cold ice in my water
My little boy mustache
is frozen too. So perfect.
Wolfie's a little tripped out
I don't think he likes the wind that much
But it's no big deal
We'll get out of here in a few hours
with him won't make him stay out the night or anything
thing that wasn't the plan anyway
so build build build can you make my build
you make
my shelter build
I'll stop this one
is so big around
I'm gonna put it
next to the
baddest part
that's ones I
got are all
pretty big
so I'll stack
them up
to that
one I
know
standing
ball
so watch
a bit
as I
possibly
can be
colder it's almost dark out now it's
on the setting and I'm very very I think I
might be close to being done for today building
the back wall at least I cut a
lot of trees a lot of it left out because it was so repetitious do you
think I'll get a fire going
and christen the new shelter only got maybe one two
three four or five more logs for the back depending
and a lot of them are
still long longer than I
need I'm done I'm hungry
I'm overheating wolf he's
done and here's the other thing I still got
to make it out of here and you saw
coming in I might not be able to make it
in here with my truck for too much
longer there's a decent road I have
to get down that's not plowed in the
wintertime that had that accesses this property
and then another good on the
property to get back in even close
to here where I can hike in and and start
building and camping
and stuff I do have a sled I do a snowmobile that's getting
fixed right now and that potentially might
be able to get me in here if we
get a crazy winter not even just
a normal winter like it's all it was hard
Not hard, but it was starting to get iffy getting in here
I think I'm gonna bust out a fire have
a drink of water of my labor
Enjoy my and I calm down look at this clearing
I've made this is all the real not real dense
But like more like that over there.
I've cleared quite a bit here and again have I said
They're all balsam fir that broke off in a windstorm.
They're all dead standing. I feel good about it
You know, it's not like I'm clear-cutting nothing
I'm just using a patch of dead standing balsam fir
that was broken off in a wind storm.
There was ice rain last night.
We'll get it going though.
Look at this one.
Oh yeah.
Score.
Betula papyrifera.
All the twigs have ice on them from the ice storm.
I'm just going to split down
per piece if I can.
I'm going to have some dry inner wood instead
of outer icy wood.
Asked
for
anything
anymore.
Deering Sammy Pucco.
Anybody hear of him anymore?
Deering, Deering Eyes, John Deering.
Quality, custom knife maker.
Back
in the bushcraft USA days.
Man, this wood is so good.
You can even, even though it's balsam fir
and it has resin in it,
and it goes against everything you've heard,
you can use this wood for a bow drill.
Very, with good results.
You can use it with good results
for the friction fire bow drill.
All right, let's get this bad boy going.
Sorry about that stupid thing. I hope I got that on there
This is gonna.
This is gonna be good.
It's gonna have plenty
of room like I said
I'll even be up more here not that high, but this will all be enclosed
Ha the wind switch directions on me, but fire should
be over there look at that look at that as I said it switched again
Anyways fire will be over there all enclosed.
I am gonna build a floor
I know I said I was trying to do that this today,
but I have to bust my butt trying to get the cover on the top and
Figure out what I'm gonna do for a floor
I have plans for the roof and I don't want to use any tarps on this one
So we're gonna build a proper like I said,
it'll take a few trips to get out here
But again with not being able to access it
I might have to do more work at a time out here
and that's okay too and camp out before it's done and that's okay
too I just didn't want to blow my load early
and ruin the camping thing here
when it's not done but that might have
to be what it is and that's okay if I
can't get in and out of here with my truck it's
a lot more involved to get in here
and I'll have to stay out here longer to make it worthwhile
which is totally cool
I don't I don't mind that at all like I said
and it's too cold gotta find Wolfie
start cleaning up here get out
of here we're losing light and I want to make
sure I'm able to navigate my way out
of here in the deep snow in the dark
with me before it's
too dark rather
it's big it's gonna
be a decent size that's
for sure
the pink
in the sky
quite pretty
this guy
really wants
to go we're
going but never seen
him wanna go home
so bad lots of fun
been a while since I've
been out in a blizzard type vibe I'm happy to have done it I'm
also happy that no
trees came down haven't experienced that in a long time
and hopefully I don't get to
again you know I will get back
with you guys next week for another part of the
shelter build hope you guys enjoyed it
thank you very much for coming along
with me oh see you soon
