Studio Tasmania is one of the most impressive examples of small-home architecture I've experienced, and what makes it so remarkable is how naturally it sits within the surrounding landscape.

The owners, Gavin and Mam, worked closely with architect Matt Williams and builder Peter Blythe to bring their vision to life. The result is an award-winning 36-square-metre home that appears to float above the coastal dunes.

The concept behind the design was to create a viewfinder, a little like those childhood slide viewers you'd hold up to your eye. Everything draws your attention towards the enormous picture window, framing the dunes, Great Oyster Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula beyond. And at night, you can lie in bed and watch the stars, or if you're lucky, an aurora.

Located at Dolphin Sands on Tasmania's east coast, around 1 hour and 45 minutes from Hobart Airport, the Studio sits amongst five acres of beachfront dunes with direct access to Nine Mile Beach.

While many tiny homes and cabins are designed for weekend stays, this is a genuinely liveable home. Everything has been carefully considered, and despite it's small footprint, you never really feel like you're compromising. I also loved the separate office pod tucked away behind the dunes. It creates a lovely separation between home and work, with a commute that takes all of 30 seconds!

Whether you're interested in small-home design and architecture or simply looking for a unique place to stay in Tasmania, I couldn't recommend experiencing Studio Tasmania enough.

For part of the year, the Studio is Gavin and Mam's private home. When they're away, they open it up for guests to experience, with the next season running from 1 December 2026 through to the end of March 2027.
