The Tim Weisberg Show.
Good
morning.
Happy
Tuesday
to you.
Welcome in to a new day here on the program
and hope it's starting off well for you.
I mean the temperature is perfect so that can't be too bad
and uh it is Tuesday which I know it
feels like we're not in mid-October
but we are it's hard to believe it seems like October just
started yesterday but here we are it's mid-October it
is flying by so uh really there's not that much
time left before the election not that much time left before
the holidays not that much time left
before the end of the year also not that much time left
to try to win 250 in our daily prize
or 25,000 in our grand prize with Money Talks we're going
to have 10 new codes for you today
we're down to the final four days of codes
so your first one will be coming up in the eight
o'clock hour and then one every hour through 5 p.m thanks
to our great sponsors for helping us
make the money talk soft tub hot tubs
and spas of Dartmouth MJ's pet training academy in a cushion
Rehoboth Selectman, Lenny Mills Jr., and American Form Corporation.
But only one person can win $25,000.
The rest of us are going to be stuck paying our heating bills
this winter, heating bills that are on the rise.
But there are some programs out there that help.
And later on this morning, we're going to have a guest joining us
to talk about the Home Energy Assistance Program and find out
who qualifies, what kind of assistance you can get,
and how to go about applying for it.
So it'll be coming up in the 8 o'clock hour.
very important information even if you don't qualify save
that information because you might
know somebody who does
and many times the qualifications are not as restrictive as you
think they are so we'll find out about all
of that coming up in the eight o'clock hour
you heard in the news Mike Roberts sharing
with you the story of the person who was
killed by touching the third rail on the MBTA
so this is unofficial this is not information that
came from the MBTA or the district attorney's office
this came from a friend of mine who was
an eyewitness a friend of mine who was actually on the train
when this happened and what happened
was this person apparently opened the emergency door
of the train you know how you can like try
to make an emergency stop uh you pull
the cord you can make the emergency stop he did that force
opened the door and jumped
and they made everybody that was on the train they had to sit there i
think they were stuck there for about two hours
and then then they opened the door and they must
have disengaged the third rail
because they had people leaving the train and walking down the
tracks he had posted video of it
and i can't imagine they let people out and onto the tracks
with an active third rail
so i i can tell you he's traumatized
by it and i'm sure so are many
of the other people who were who were on the train
but maybe more information will come out
about that uh as the day goes on we
also have stories for you at wbsm.com and on the wbsm app
as we do each day yesterday Michael Rock had
the story that the Honeydew locations that are owned
by Walter Moniz as you know he's he's had Chris McCarthy there
at some of his locations for live
shows those are now on the market so if you are someone
who maybe you're in a variety of other
businesses and you've always thought having
a coffee shop would be a good investment maybe
you're somebody
who is a big fan of Honeydew there's
an opportunity here for you four Honeydew
locations Conway Street in New Bedford that's the one
on Route 18 Acushion Avenue in New Bedford
that's the one in the the north end near uh Paraffas 63 Bedford Street
in Middleborough and
855 Broadway in Raynham so for 750,000 you
can get all four Honeydews and the licensing
the the franchise license all the equipment all that stuff
which don't get to the buildings
those buildings are under lease agreements to the property owners
but you get the business
and the franchise rights so if you're interested all
the information is in the story at wbsm.com
and on the wbsm app
but that seems like a pretty low price
for what you're getting i mean i i would
never have 750,000 myself to to go and buy this business
but it seems like if you are looking to
get into that that business
or maybe you already are in that business this would be a steal it
sounds like now most of the time i think the hard part
is when you want to open a business is getting
those franchise rights getting getting the license
to open up a franchise years ago i talked i was
working with someone who wanted to this is when
when Hooters was expanding and he wanted to open
one in the Wareham area he thought it'd be a good good place
but you know you get Cranberry Highway
you've got people coming to the Cape
and he's like i don't know the first thing about how to
set this up so i reached out to the corporate company
to find out how much it would cost and
at that time so we're talking early 2000s they wanted 75,000
a year just to call yourself Hooters
like that was just the the base franchise fee
every year you still had to you know buy all of
the stuff from them you still had to buy you know carry all
the merch all that stuff and they would
get a cut of all that but they just charged you
seventy five thousand dollars flat just to have
that name and you had to build to their specifications
so it just so happened the
property that he was interested in putting it at he owned
so he could totally refurbish it the way
that they wanted to but then that's that's great
but that's also extra cost on your end so in the
And it proved to be a little bit more,
a lot more than just that initial $75,000.
So here, this is a business that already has gone through all
the trouble of it's built to suit.
It's made to fit what they want a Honey Dew to look like.
It's got all the branding.
It's got everything you need.
It's turnkey if you've ever wanted
to run a Honey Dew donut shop or four.
I don't know how it works either if you could buy this four
in a package and then sell off two if you wanted to.
I don't know.
You can call Ron Oliveira, whose number is in the story,
and he can give you all the details on that.
But it's rare that a chance comes up like this.
And I'm sure somebody out there is listening and says, you know what?
I have always wanted to own a donut shop,
especially at a time when, you know, DoorDash,
Uber Eats, Grubhub, they're all exploding in popularity,
which I think is part of the issue with some of these places.
You know, when folks say, oh, I go to this spot,
I go to that spot, they don't have enough people working.
I don't know if that's true or if they just don't have enough people
working to cover folks that walk in because they're probably busy
handling all of these takeout orders through these delivery apps.
You know, we had talked about this when someone had proposed
on social media that the feast should do food delivery apps for people
that don't want to go down there, but still want to have the food.
And, you know, we talked about how that would be crazy
because they're already trying to keep up with the folks who are there.
imagine if you're pulling people away from that to fulfill these orders
because you would get a
lot of orders plus you know the more i thought
about it how are the folks going to come to pick
it up there's nowhere to park nowhere to leave
your car they'd have to create like a special
area for those drivers to go just it'd be too crazy
but that's what the reality is for a lot
of these these businesses now is that's
that's become the primary customer base and so yeah
they've got to they've got to fulfill those orders
because if they don't keep up with the times
if they don't if they get bad reviews if they get complaints
then they lose that ability and that's
what's keeping a lot of restaurants afloat in fact these days
when i hear that a restaurant
is closing the first question i ask is well
were they doing food delivery apps because really a lot
of the ones who are suffering are the ones
that have said now we're not going to get into that

in a few moments do you know the difference between a
caregiver and a care partner
when it comes to dementia those terms help us understand the shift
from two people helping each other more
or less equally to one person becoming much more dependent
on the other. Are you a dementia caregiver?
Perhaps you care for your spouse, parent,
family member, or friend.
Whoever it is, being the dementia caregiver can build relationships
and test them. Having helpful information
about dementia can empower you to survive
and thrive as a caregiver.

in his almost 30 years of law enforcement it's believed
the gunman was a relative in his mid-40s
described by those familiar with the situation
as the grandfather new White House press secretary
Katie Zakaria will hold her first briefing today.
In a Truth Social post, President Trump announced Zakaria
officially began her tenure as press secretary yesterday
and will hold an introductory news conference today at 9.30.
Trump recently tapped Zakaria,
a conservative commentator and former communications advisor.
Actress Selma Blair is charged with assault following
a mid-air incident on a Delta flight.
TMZ says the 54-year-old had a meltdown Sunday night
while flying from L.A. to New York City,
punching a flight attendant and then biting another
when they stopped her from opening the plane's door mid-flight.
The actress was arrested after Delta Flight 938 landed
at JFK International Airport
and taken to a hospital,
reportedly kicking a police officer in the head and attacking a nurse
in the ambulance. A rep for Blair says she'd suffered
a medical emergency. The actress is
known to have multiple sclerosis,
a neurological and autoimmune condition that can impact
communication between the brain and the body.
I'm Sarah Lee Kessler. One person has died and
at least four more injured at Six Flags over Georgia after
an incident on the Goliath
roller coaster. Officials confirmed one visitor to the park has died.
The ride was evacuated.
The roller coaster climbs to heights of 200 feet
and reaches a maximum speed of 70 miles per hour,
although it's unknown how the person fell out of the ride.
Pope Leo will head to the hospital
today for surgery to remove an early stage growth from his lung.
The 71-year-old pontiff made the
announcement on Sunday during his prayer at St. Peter's Square.
Pope Leo said doctors recently
discovered a nodule in his lung that was detected to be cancerous
but at an early stage. New York
City Mayor Zoran Mamdani says the city will
be investigating the ICE-involved shooting
of a man inside of a vehicle with a five-year-old present.
Mamdani over the weekend ripped ICE
agents saying when you see the video of the last week's shooting,
it feels like you're looking at
a mass shooter opposed to seeing someone
who's representing a federal agency. Department of
Homeland Security says Oscar Belgall,
who has a criminal record, tried fleeing the arrest in
Marble Hill, ramming an ICE vehicle before agents shot him in the neck.
Cleanup efforts are ongoing
after the remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel slammed
the west over the weekend.
In Las Vegas, storms dropped over an inch
of rain at Harry Reid International Airport,
leading to lengthy ground delays.
Meanwhile, several Southern California
coastal communities saw significant flooding.
Flood watches remain in effect for parts of Arizona,
Nevada, Utah, and Idaho today,
with up to three inches possible in some areas.
A coastal flood advisory also in effect for Southern California
where high tides and surf are increasing.
Scientists in Houston are finding a big piece of the autism puzzle.
According to researchers at Baylor College of Medicine
and Texas Children's Hospital, a small genetic change
may help explain why boys are diagnosed
with autism four times as often as girls.
Girls typically have two X chromosomes,
and researchers believe the second one may offer some protection.
Since boys only have one X chromosome,
it could make them more vulnerable to genetic changes
that reduce the activity of a gene vital to brain development.
And scientists now want to see whether other genes play a similar role.

Welcome back.
I'm not sure if you use the Stop and Shop app or website,
but if you do, you probably encountered some issues yesterday.
The website and the app both went offline after
a network security issue.
apparently somebody had gotten into the system somehow
and they ended up shutting down the system
for security reasons and so that the app wasn't working
which i don't think would be too big of
a deal except for the fact that didn't stop
and shop move away from physical coupons and have
everybody start collecting those coupons
and clipping them on the app i don't know my apps
never really worked correctly for me every time i go over there
and i'm like why don't i have any
gas points. I'm like, we have to set that up in your app.
I'm like, I've tried. Every time I've
done it, it says that it works.
So I don't really use the app at all.
But if you do use it and
you're dependent on it for your coupons
and you couldn't access them and you're going there to do
your shopping, I mean, I'm sure that was extremely frustrating.
Now, everything still remained open,
the stores, the pharmacy, the gas station, everything.
And this wasn't just local stop
and shop. This was all of them.
But they're working on trying to figure out exactly what
it happen and there's a story that i wanted to share
with you this comes from wcvb this happened
in new hampshire but i think we've all kind
of been in a situation like this before where we've
we've had this fear but this woman went
into an urgent care clinic in Keene, New Hampshire with
an asthma attack now she got there
at well she got there like kind of late they closed at 8 p.m
she got there kind of late they took her into the room
at 7:45 well at 7:45 they gave her a steroid
shot and they left her in the room and said we'll
be right back nobody ever returned and she's just
sitting there thinking to herself uh what's going
on where is everybody why hasn't anybody come to
see me it's been a while and so she went
and opened the door to see where everybody was and
she ended up setting off the alarm they'd left
and they'd set the alarm they forgot that she was in
the exam room and so now she's in this urgent care clinic
with the alarm going off panicking
she texted her husband they locked me in called 9-1-1
which i don't understand why she didn't
just call 9-1-1 the police showed up
and they said yeah it looks like they left you in there
looks like they they forgot about you
so the company behind the clinic uh they said that
they're going to take steps to make sure
something like this does not happen again
they said we sincerely regret the incident
that occurred on Thursday September 24th
that's when this happened at our urgent care clinic
in Keene involving one of our valued
patients clearly this should never have happened
and does not represent the quality of care we
seek to provide the Keene community
the practice manager immediately expressed our deepest
apologies to the patient we have taken steps
to ensure this won't happen again and we remain
committed to providing the Keene area
with high quality care we've been providing for more than
a decade so the woman said she was just sharing
the story with with the media because she didn't
want to happen to somebody else but it
is a pretty wacky situation to find yourself in it seems to me
like that can easily happen i think
the the practice should
be do you leave all the exam
room doors open at the end of the night
that way there you're sure nobody's in them now that might
not be possible they might have to keep them closed
for the alarm to work if you are you know
if you've ever been in a business where they have
an alarm that has to get set at night i'm sure
Dave and the team over at All Security Co could explain this better
but uh many of them require
any time that there is a particular zone the door needs
to be closed for that zone to to activate
so that could be the way that it's set up especially
if it's like ground floor level
and somebody could come in through
an exam room window they want to make sure that if you open
that door from that exam room into the main hallway
that the alarm is going to go off so
they might not be able to leave the door open they're going
to have to add at least a room check
before everybody leaves you know i mean even here i could stand
in the middle of the the hallway here
at the radio station and say hello is anybody here
and if anybody's in any of the rooms as long
as they're not in an office with the door closed they'd hear me
and they'd say yep i'm back here
okay have a good night you know and then leave
but i still make sure i go around because we work
in a business where somebody could be behind
a closed door on a phone call a lot of us wear
headphones when we're working on things at our desks
so they might not hear me if i say hey
anybody here i'm leaving gonna set the alarm
so you have to do a physical walk around and check
and you know it's not a huge place just takes
a minute make sure the lights are shut off and
they're gonna have to incorporate that and here she
is just thinking you know uh they're taking
it a little bit longer they said they'd be right back
but you know that's that's all right it's
they're probably busy it's an urgent care they're usually busy i just
that's the one question i have
like why did she text her husband
and tell her text her husband to say call 9-1-1 maybe maybe
the alarm was so loud she didn't think she could communicate
with the person i don't know but
that's not a good thing when you're in there for an asthma attack
and then they give you something
that's going to make you
hyperventilate good thing they gave
her that steroid first 508-996-0500

and welcome back. In NB, residents sending an app chat
message said, "I know an elderly woman that was left
in a room at Hawthorne Medical about a year ago
after waiting about 35 to 45 minutes in the exam room she had
to use the restroom when her daughter
opened the door to take her to the restroom they saw all
the lights were out and everyone had gone
home luckily she wasn't alone
or she would have freaked out. Yeah, I mean I think we've probably
been in some of those situations. We've probably
been in moments, you know, all of us, where "Oh hey,
we're still here," you know, but it's another thing
when they completely close down around you, like
even, even here, if I'm going to use the restroom before I go home
and I think like, you know, usually
it's just myself or and our friend Jason here
who's usually the only other person that's here
late, but like I'll say to him, "Hey,
if you're leaving i'm just gonna use the restroom i'll
be out in a minute but i just didn't want you
to think i was gone set the alarm so it's it's
probably more common than we think
but in a medical facility i mean i i know i know there's
times i've been in a waiting room you know
a an examination room at the doctors where they've kind
of forgotten i was there
that's definitely happened i know they'd like to say that it
didn't but uh it i know it has yeah we forgot about that guy
but i mean luckily i'm not there
for an emergency or anything
or anything serious usually just to check up but that's you know
that's to be expected when it's in the normal course
of the business day doctors get really
busy their attention gets pulled
from something else you know they're supposed to be coming back
into that room and then someone asks them doctor can you just look
at this real quick they look at
it and they're okay and then like all right where am i going next
and then they go to the next
patient's room instead of going back to my room
that kind of stuff happens but that's different
than leaving for the end
of the night it reminds me
of what was always kind
of like a hidden fear
of any kid that rode the school bus
and that's falling asleep on the school bus missing your
stop and then like you wake up and you're
in the bus driver's driveway i used to fall asleep all
the time on the bus in high school
and and luckily i had a a route at the time where it was Cremeset
Point in Wareham so the bus would go down
to Cremeset Point it would go past my house go all
the way down to the point turn around
and then come back up so if the bus driver saw me sleeping
she'd let me sleep and then she'd wake me up
when she came back around the other way she just stopped
the bus and yell right your house okay all right sorry
but like every kid i think has that fear of like
falling asleep on the bus and then you don't get to go home even
though you totally would the bus
driver checks the bus when they park it make sure there's
no kids on the bus although we hear those
stories too but i think i have like the the latent fear
of that situation when i'm in places don't
don't forget about me don't forget i'm still in here
but if you've been in one of those situations
i'd love to hear the story 508-996-0500
or you can send an app chat message or an open line
voicemail on the WBSM app also that Six Flags story
all of the i don't know if it's all a majority of
the Six Flags roller coasters
are shut down now i don't know how many Six Flags are open today
you know obviously yesterday
was Columbus Day Indigenous People's Day day that a lot of people
have off and amusement parks would be open for a monday
but i think a lot of them by this point
in the year they're not open during
the week right especially like the Six Flags do their
their halloween thing during the week
or is it just weekends but they're they're gonna be
going over all these roller coasters now
because of this issue that happened in Georgia yesterday
where a guy fell out of the roller coaster it
was their Goliath in Georgia and he fell out of it
and there were i heard it on the news
this morning there were people who were on this
roller coaster saying they could hear
and feel the the belts the straps clicking and unclicking
like as if they were coming undone and clicking again
and that must must have been terrifying
not only even if nobody fell from the roller coaster
and and apparently this guy kind of
bounced off their car and everything
but even if that didn't happen and you're just on on the ride
and everybody gets back safely but this is going
on the whole time that's terrifying i remember
there was one time i went on the Great American Scream Machine
at six flags in new jersey and we
were just about to take off
and i stopped i stopped the operator said wait wait wait and
everybody got mad because i stopped him
because there was a double a battery rolling around
on the bottom of the the cart
and they tell you like if you see any loose objects let us know
and so i stopped them and i said there's a there's a battery here
and so the guy came over
and he picked it up and everybody was like booing me
and the ride operator was like this could have
killed somebody which i'm not really sure
the physics of that but i mean if we'd gone upside
down it might have hit me in the head
but it still would have been a just a double A battery
hitting me in the head it wasn't like it was going
to hit me at the speed in which the rule i don't
know anyway i'm not a physicist it was the right thing
to do and i'm glad i did glad i did that
rather than take a double A battery to the nose
while going upside down all right we gotta take
a break here for our final break of the hour we will
be back in a few moments and welcome back in
jeff sent in an app chat message asking if we would

of things to get involved if
