Russian troops are deliberately destroying Dobropilia to prevent Ukrainian units from gaining a foothold in the city and opening a path to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk . The occupiers are attempting to infiltrate the city in small groups, disguised as civilians, and some of the prisoners taken near Dobropilia are mobilized from the temporarily occupied territories. Despite constant shelling and the threat of drones, a significant portion of the local population still refuses to leave the city.
The situation around Dobropilia escalated this winter, although just last summer the town was a military stronghold with functioning stores and a large civilian population. Two fighters from the Rubezh Brigade, who have been defending the town since May-July of last year, spoke to Ukrainian Witness about the changes in this regard . According to them, back then, free movement of vehicles around the town was still possible, and there was no clear demarcation line.
"I could easily get on an ATV and ride to Krasnopolye, towards Belitsky. Now, not only will I not get on one, I don't even want to go near one," said "Natsik," a member of the Rubezh brigade.
Today, entering Dobropillia is extremely dangerous, as the bridges around the city are down, the roads are destroyed, and what remains is controlled by the enemy. According to the medic, even walking has become a real gamble due to the constant surveillance of reconnaissance drones. The main objective of the occupiers in Dobropilia is to destroy positions and prevent Ukrainian troops from gaining a foothold, conducting continuous air and artillery strikes. According to the intelligence officer, the Russians can afford to launch dozens of sorties daily with guided bombs, employing the same tactics they previously used near Pokrovsk and Rodinskoye.
"Last year, the enemy didn't reach Dobropilia. This allowed us to clear large areas from Zoloty Kolodets and push back the enemy. This year, they're trying to gain a foothold in the city," said the 2nd Battalion's intelligence chief, call sign "Odessa."
Some of the occupiers who manage to infiltrate the city disguise themselves in civilian clothes and pose as local residents, sometimes living this way for months. The military cites a significant manpower advantage as the main reason the enemy is able to amass near Dobropilia. According to the intelligence officer, the majority of prisoners taken in this direction are former prisoners and conscripts from territories occupied since 2014, who, he says, are constantly under pressure from local military recruitment offices In Dobropillia, many civilians are still under the daily fire of enemy drones. A medic said he saw a drone attack a man who was simply carrying water on a cart, and once, soldiers shot down a drone right over a local resident's head.
