News 5 Downey police are asking for the public's help
as they investigate a surprise attack on one of their officers.
It happened this morning as that officer was on an unrelated call.
Fox 11's Nick Garcia live there in Downey with what we know. Nick?
Right, Christine. Well, thankfully that officer is okay.
His patrol car, though, took several bullets.
Now, police are working to determine why
that driver opened fire as he drove by that officer.
We'll take you to some video now.
Again, this happened around 8:30 this morning
on Downey Avenue near Cherokee Drive. That's just
down the street from Our Lady of Perpetual Help School.
Investigators say an officer was sitting
in his patrol car, similar to the one you see here,
on an unrelated call when the driver of
a Dodge Durango drove by and started shooting.
The car was struck several times. That's the
patrol car. The officer was not hit.
It's unclear why the driver started firing. That's of course
part of the investigation.
Detectives say the officer who was fired upon then followed the
suspect and pulled him over.
He called for backup and the man was arrested. This officer acted very
quickly, very bravely, you know, and he obviously heard this,
went to investigate and, you know,
put his own due to the fact that there was a school
and not knowing exactly what was going on,
went in and stopped the vehicle and ultimately found what he found.
Now, two handguns, including the one used in this shooting,
were recovered from that Durango.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed what happened
or maybe even has surveillance footage from that area
to give them a call. You can also call crime
stoppers. If you'd like to remain anonymous
as for that suspect among the charges he is now facing
attempted homicide live in Downey. I'm Nick Garcia, Fox 11 news.
