AI GeneratedStamford is preparing to launch an automated speed enforcement program in school zones. Despite delays pushing the start date past September, the city expects the cameras to be operational within two weeks. A 45-day warning period will precede the issuance of fines, with proceeds dedicated to roadway safety and transportation improvements.
If you've driven through Stamford recently, you may have noticed dozens
of black metal poles going up around school zones.
That's because speed cameras are coming to the city.
Justin DeVellis leads us off tonight.
Well, the mayor's office tells me supply delays pushed back
the official launch of these cameras.
The city says it's hoping to have them up
and running within the next two weeks.
You know, I didn't even know there'd be cameras coming to this area.
The mayor had previously said
the city's automated speed enforcement program would launch
at 14 locations across seven school zones by September.
But it's the middle of October, and the cameras aren't even up yet.
I was wondering what they were doing over there
with some of the construction.
Funds collected from fines will go towards roadway safety
and transportation mobility improvements, the city says.
There will be a 45-day warning period before fines go out.
And while the start date has yet to be announced, one thing's for sure,
people's opinions on these speed cameras are still mixed.
I mean, if you know that they're there, they're fine.
If you don't know that they're there, they suck.
I think that they are great in areas like pedestrian walkways,
schools and whatnot where you do have a lot of pedestrian traffic.
I do believe the police department does have
their own job that they need to keep speeders as well
and it shouldn't just be through cameras and AI.
And we'll continue to keep you updated
on when these cameras officially launch.
