Since 9, the Minneapolis School Board just passed a resolution
to put a pause on plans to close more than a dozen schools.
Fox 9's Maury Glover joins me live tonight.
And, Maury, this comes after some intense pushback from not only
the families involved here, but also city leaders.
That's right. This has been an emotional issue.
But ultimately, the superintendent had a change of heart.
Based on what we've heard so clearly,
so overwhelmingly, and from so many people,
even with a few days left of the listening period,
I must recommend now that the school board does not move forward
with any school closures or mergers at this time.
In a surprise move, Dr. Sharon Sales-Adams said based
on public feedback,
she has changed her mind about her plan
to transform Minneapolis public schools.
I want this city to heal. Let's just take a breath, okay?
The three controversial proposals would have closed
or merged up to 16 schools
to address dwindling enrollment and improve student experience.
experience. But critics argued it would destabilize the district
and send more parents to other
districts. This is a blindside move,
even though I'm grateful because my fight was to not have any
school closures during the 27-28.
After some back and forth, the board discussed a resolution to
officially pause any school closings until at least 2028.
This city and this community went
through a lot this year and we need an stability.
Which many parents in attendance were happy to
hear. This was a miss and I think that she did
a really good job coming in up front and saying
hey this isn't the way forward and so I recommend that we stop.
So I was really grateful to that.
I think we're all a little almost surprised
that they heard our feedback. We've done an incredible
amount of work behind the scenes as parents
and community members to put together
data upon data so the fact that they're hearing us is very encouraging.
About 20 minutes ago the
school board voted to approve
that resolution meaning there will no longer be a vote on this
transformation plan on November 10th.
Reporting live in Minneapolis, Maury Glover, Fox 9.
