always for keeping us updated.
As we continue here, you guys, let's talk about this story.
Newly released 911 audio nearly two weeks after Tennessee failed
to execute Krista Pike
is revealing the confusion between dispatchers and prison officials.
911 recordings reveal that
there was a half hour delay in getting help
to inmate Krista Pike after Tennessee's failed
execution attempt last month.
Dispatchers questioned whether the emergency was actually
real. Take a listen. A medical call for service
at the Riverbend prison saying that they carried
out the execution, the subject didn't pass away,
and they need an ambulance because she's not
breathing normally. Well, we don't have any gender
and we just know it's a 50-year-old person.
We are trying to find out if that is an actual thing
that is happening and we need to send an
ambulance and or if you need police assistance
or if this is someone that is just basically
prank calling or like swatting us her supervisors here
at the DEC we have been informed that it is
a false call there is no medical assistance needed
at Riverbend prison we got a call about
a failed execution at your facility
and we just call in to verify um i'm being told that
nobody from our facility called you
so uh there's not really anything to speak of at the moment
What's going on is my client, Christabel Pike,
is undergoing a state execution.
She has completed the stages of the protocol.
And lastly, we need from the attorneys who's present,
she's still alive and breathing and needs immediate life-saving care.
The central control just called us
and advised that it is actually real, so we're going to have FBI intervention.
All right, so you could hear a lot of the back-and-forth
and confusion there.
That initial call came in at 8:40 in the evening of September 30th,
about an hour after the attempted lethal injection started.
But the caller was unable to provide a code
to help verify the request's legitimacy.
And you can hear the dispatcher was concerned if it was a prank call
or someone was swatting them.
It wasn't until about 30 minutes later
that prison officials confirmed it was a real request
and started letting responders through the gates.
Krista Pike survived two doses of lethal injection drugs,
and that was when Tennessee was executing her or trying to execute her
for the 1995 murder of her classmate.
She at one point required
a ventilator before regaining consciousness and beginning to walk.
She's since returned to prison.
She's been released from the hospital.
As the state investigates what happened here,
Pike's attorneys are also asking the state
to commute her sentence to life without parole.
Additionally, the state of Tennessee has canceled
its remaining executions for the year.
