Answer Steve Wallace. Oh, hey, how's it going, man?
I'm good, buddy. I'm in a snowbank in a
Walmart parking lot. Really?
What a different night that was.
All right. There's somebody
right there. That's
what we're looking
for right there.
All right,
folks at Walmart.
How you folks doing? This is a really different video today.
I'm getting my inner Steve Wallace
on. Show it to Steve because he's the inspiration behind this idea.
So we're going to camp in the
Walmart parking lot in a snowbank. I've seen him camp.
I've seen Steve Wallace camp in Walmart
parking lots before, but never in a snowbank in the parking lot.
So this is what we're going to
do. We're going to go on inside Walmart,
buy all the gear we need or 90% of the gear that we need
for this overnight. I'll take you along with me
and then we'll find a suitable snowbank in this
parking lot. There's some big ones.
I'm hoping that they're not all full of ice underneath
and we'll dig down into a make type
of a quinzhee snowbank type shelter, dig it all out, set it up
for camping and hopefully not get kicked out before we get
this around the night i'm pretty
excited and uh this is a first for me
so let's head on inside buy some gear and uh and get
started i'm gonna have to mute it
for a minute here just don't want to get any issues with the
music uh looking at the Ozark Trail sleeping bags
they're five degrees plus rated to five degrees
but tonight it's supposed to get to negative five celsius
so i need to grab two of them
and the best ones that i could see were the five degree ones
so we just grab two of the same we'll
put them inside each other
and together it will be plenty okay i forget my diarrhea relief
let's see any sleeping pads i'm gonna get
a couple yoga pads put them on top of each other
that should be good enough all right off to find
some food now all right we're gonna take supper
nice and easy we got a Tim Hortons chicken noodle
soup got some Ritz crackers and this little nut
cheese uh lunch meat medley
while we're here we're gonna get a heavy duty shovel to help build the
quincy to dig all the snow out
and i got this secondary uh lightweight shovel just to scoop
it out or potentially use
because it's lighter no i
do but i i never activated it it's okay
you want me to give you a new one
no thank you i know i know i know i gotta do it i'm silly
i'm a silly man
right my wife yells at me all the time i know i know
and have a new type like a month ago
if you spend two hundred dollars you can split that
into six payments oh yeah yeah okay okay all
right thank you all right all right debit please
thank you have a good day all
right back in the truck now we
got a bunch of gear i ended up
getting some of those uh foam pads
that you like puzzle piece pads as well to put down so i got
three layers of insulation underneath me two
sleeping bags should be good let's go drive
around and find a place we need to find a place
that i can spend the day building and digging out
without getting without seeming like
a transient without getting kicked out of here so um yeah
let's go drive around and see if we can find
that perfect snowbank in the Walmart parking lot to
camping overnight Steve Wallace style all right i think i found
a good spot there's like a delivery
guy back here right now but after he's gone
this looks pretty skill pretty slick um there's a big
mound oh it's snowing quite a bit actually there's
a big mound right there that i can make a quincy
type shelter out of with a little tiny tiny bit of bush behind
and there's the parking lot
um see there's another delivery guy right there man there's tons
of people back in here tons of
people anyways we'll make our move soon this is so weird that feels
so weird doing moves all right
in the parking lot here i found a decent spot i'm just i parked
as close as i can to it we're just
going to take the shovel for now and my tripod my hat
and gloves and we'll leave the rest of
stuff here
for now
certainly
easy
in there
that's
the reason
i bought
this big
heavy duty
shovel
it's around it's gonna take a hot
minute there's people looking at me
what would you think if you saw
this what would you think what a weirdo probably think i'm a
transient hopefully not anyways all i have
to do here it's snowing a little bit better here
all i'm going to do is go in as far as i can
and then hollow it out make like a quincy igloo
snow trench
type thing
i made
a little bit
of leeway
my favorite
method is to
get your feet
in here and just start booting out
this is like building forts in the parking lot the snow snow
plow
when you're
a kid but it
reminds me
of making
some
progress
lots
to go still
ah getting
cozy
though getting cozy i had to take off
my sweater man i mean my coat i'm just steaming up a storm
in here i've got a change of clothes in the truck i'm going to need it
because i'm going to be
soaking wet one good bonus about doing it this way
is that i don't have to wait for the snow to
settle because i imagine i won't be done
this before dark normally you have to let it settle
few hours
to be
solid
this has
been
sitting
for weeks
it's
a little
too solid
getting
somewhere
a lot of this is just loosening it
then i gotta go in with my feet my hands
and dig it out
excavate it if you want
to get technical joe
okay smokes oh it's
freaking snowing but
working up
a sweat too
loads right
there i'm gonna
lay from that
end to this end
here i've
got enough headroom i just have to make it level now enough headroom
and enough body room just have
make it
level
oh okay
getting
there
here i'm
showing you
the uh black
foam mats
the puzzle
pieces that i bought at uh walmart i didn't show
buying them i don't know why i thought i got
enough stuff i actually kind of grabbed these on the way out
because i wasn't sure that the two
yoga pads i had was going to be sufficient uh padding off
of the ground i just got to squeeze
these puzzle pieces in there a little slippery squeeze
these puzzle pieces in there and then
head on in I end up needing to use three of them
in the shelter proper got a little light here
first stop we
are gonna need three
of these bad boys you see
there we go still on the foam
squeeze down a little bit okay we got room hey we got room
in here feet are a little cramped but
once I get my shoes off actually I can even just dig
a little farther just make a little
foot room there it's no big deal let's get
the other one in here
hello sun's going
down over there ah
see the sunset we'll
get the pad on top
and sleeping
bag in there too that smells like rotten fish
that's a weird smell for a yoga mat that's got
that's pretty dense actually i think
with these two oh i have the other one too i have that
thinner one i bought on top too yeah i'll be fine
with this cool cool to see what you can make work
for you especially in the winter time not going
to be the most even sleep it would be the worst
of that for sure
cool cool cool
cool cooly
cooly cooly
supper going
here soon too
two of these
sleeping sleeping bags as well
because they weren't rated very cold plus five i think it's
not gonna get too cold tonight negative five maybe
but with both of them i'll be fine or i should be
we'll see with the idea behind the quincy is that snow isn't insulator
so in here we actually warmer
than out in the open actually warmer than a tent
because of the snow insulation okay other way
other way around there we go okay cool pretty
squared away pretty squared away for now i could
have had a pillow i should have brought
a should have bought a walmart pillow oh no can you hear
that hope you heard all that so i didn't even really notice
this street lamp here before
and it ended up being right behind
or right in front of my quincy shelter uh ended up giving
me a little bit of light on the outside at night
but inside the quincy i could see no light from
it at all just uh walking back
to the quincy after walking down to the to the road to check
things out at the road watch a couple cars go
by but i looked a little weird holding my camera in
my face down there oh i found a white claw
when i was digging out the uh the quincy from inside i
found a few cigarette butts too whatever
that was on the uh parking lot ground got obviously plowed
up and into the into my pile didn't they know i
was gonna make a quincy here we're all squared
away in here got my bigger coat on got
this area here where i'm gonna cook i've got my secondary
sleeping bag but i'm just gonna put it at the door
to kind of block the light that's coming out of
here I got my foods all right, Ritz crackers, freaking Tim Hortons
so a lot of the states I
know don't have Tim Hortons, the states that are bordering Canada
or near Canada, Ohio, Michigan
I'm sure like I don't even know
if like Wisconsin would have it, places like that have Tim Hortons
it's a Canadian staple, it's like a donut shop
that sells everything now, it's just Timmy's, they
call it Timmy's, we call it, we call it Timmy's, I'm
Canadian, we call it Timmy's, anyways just making a
spot here, this is so fun, I feel like
a kid, okay I got my small titanium cup
my pocket rocket
little canister stove, might be called
the Micro Rocket, I got this one a long long time ago
when I first started getting into like, excuse me, lightweight excursions
backpacking, canoe tripping, and I remember getting it
and it was a different model
because they were sold out of the one I wanted, the Pocket
Rocket, I think this is the Micro
Anyways, it's a good stove.
it's been served its purpose for years, let's hope this
this butane will work, or whatever is it, isobutane
We shall see
and the nice thing about this soup
is that I didn't spill chicken
noodle soup all over my hands
this is a pop-top so you don't have to get a fancy
the you know, I'm trying to say, can opener, can opener is the word
can't do something and talk at the same time as you know,
my wife will get a kick out of that one
Okay, let's see.
There we go.
I'll try to not spill
this and all
of my sleeping gear.
This is cool, man
I should have got a candle. I should got a couple candles
and put them in here just for like extra warmth
it's not a big deal i'm not going to need it
but in other instances you can use it to solidify
the top of the quincy like to make it like
into an ice like this as it is now again i didn't have
to do that because it was already ice
so the warmth from the candle will kind of glaze it
all over and then it'll solidify again
so that nothing's falling down on you it's not too bad
not too bad at all i already ate my lunch my uh cheese
and crackers and nuts medley you can see
the steam coming off my pants actually if i just left
this going this will probably heat it up in
here a touch it takes some ventilation every now
and then but so the way this goes is it's lower
there it kind of goes up gradually onto a slant
and then plateaus out here but thinking that
they're the thinking behind that is that there's
a cold well where most of the water or sorry
cold air will get trapped and uh stay down there i'm sleeping in snow
though sleeping in snow you
I'll tell you I can hear
traffic, but it's only
when it's like
a a loud truck
or a big like a fast car
Zooming down the street. I can't hear most of the traffic on the road
That's a pretty busy road as far as Sault Ste. Marie goes.
I can't hear it, but it very faintly
So this thing is doing a lot for soundproofing and honestly,
it's not that cold like I you can see my breath like crazy
There's a lot of steam. It's really not that cold.
I don't feel like I even need to have gloves on
I'm so
hungry
All I had was that freaking
Nothing
like warm
In this case hot soup
Hot soup and crackers
So this is fun
You know what this is a lot of fun
Actually I had an idea
Let's try to call Steve Wallace
I'll have service I'm in the city
Let's try to call Steve Wallace
And tell him what we're doing
And see if we can get a
Couple words of wisdom
From the master
Stealth Camping Master
I promise you he has no idea I'm going to call him
Let's see
Call him on Instagram
Oh my gosh what is this
Okay so we need to
Camping Steve that's his name
Let's see if we can call him
Let's see if we can call him right now
This is funny
I've never called him before
Answer
Steve
Wallace
Oh hey how's
it going man
I'm good buddy
I'm in a snow bank in a Walmart parking lot
Really
Yeah.
I'm trying to do that, but I was scared of,
like, a snowplow dumping more snow on me.
That is something I did not consider, yes.
I will have to get out of here before
there's too much more snow coming down.
Well, I had to call you.
I got you on video here just to let you know.
And I wanted to get a couple words of wisdom for you.
This is my first stealth camp.
Yeah.
No.
There's no excuse for this.
Okay.
Sorry, I'm interrupting, man.
If you want to stay warm in your sleeping bag,
you've got to strip down to your skivvies.
and you're gonna sweat too much that's not a good thing
for stealth camping because when you get
busted i saw that yeah listen
my sleeping things would
have looked a lot more creepy right
yeah dude like look look yeah i'm in a like i'm
in a quincy there's a sleeping i went so i went
into walmart right and i bought all the gear that i needed
or most of the gear i had brought like a
cup and stuff like that but i brought like a yoga mat for the bottom
and like a couple crappy
sleeping bags you know what i mean
then i i freaking tried to try to get into an area where
it wasn't so obvious and i tunneled right in here people
were looking at me left and right but like
at some point you just got to be like whatever like
no it's not really cold at all not in here
no it's like negative five out
but it's pretty warm in here actually yeah it's like negative
it's it's just impossible to stealth it minus 30
in any successful way so yeah no i'd say those are
those are my pointers uh for like trying
to stealth it out well i'm i'm a real bad for never
stripping down anyways when i go
to sleep you know what i mean i just like overdo it with the
sleeping bag usually so it's fine for me that way
an excuse for sure like my only excuse could be
like they let people camp in the walmart parking lot in trailers
or in tents on this like why can't
i just you know what i mean oh
is it any different that just seems like elitist that you need to camp
you obviously have a shovel
with you yeah or two i just get
creeped out with those things that they're
gonna come down on me yeah this one's pretty solid it's uh
the biggest concern like you're
saying is is if a plow dumps more
but i'm on the other side where it won't even really
i don't think it'll affect it so much you know what i mean
but you're right like if i hear a
plow coming i'm freaking bolting for the door yes sir
and hopefully a perfect setup well man it's
all the inspirations from you
so thank you inspired me to start up a channel so remember
sitting there going to school
and i was like watching your channel like oh man that'd be so
cool to like you know have all those subscribers
and all the comments coming in you were like the
guy and you know you still are pretty much
the guy out there doing look at you man freaking blow me
away i do the lazy like every unless i start bushcrafting
with power tools like that that's
that could be your niche man
that could be the next thing there
you go well i appreciate it steve
Hey, well, stay warm, my friend.
Yeah, when you find your way out here, give me a call.
100%, buddy.
Awesome. Cheers, man.
Take care.
Stay warm and down, my friend.
Thank you.
Oh, that was cool.
What a good guy.
That was the first time I ever talked to him.
We messaged back and forth before, but that was cool.
All right, I've got to eat my soup.
I've got to eat my soups.
What a nice guy.
I will have to get together with him soon enough.
I like giving credit where credit is due.
There's one thing that really irks me.
It's like, you don't have to, like, I don't claim credit for anything.
I would like to have some kind of kudos thrown my way here
and there I know I didn't create
anything but like there are some things that I
was the forerunner on in YouTube there's no
question there's no doubt about it nobody can contest
that and you know what I don't really
ever hear it um I think it's pretty uh selfish
to be honest with you I always give credit where
credit's due I'm not the creator of anything nor is anyone in this day
and age but you should give
a little shout out to who you learned something
from or who you got inspiration from or who you
who you found out about something
from you guys have always heard me give shout outs to Terry
Barney and people in the past um Iowa Woodsman
is his name but anyways is it big headed of me
to think that i deserve some flowers
as well you know what i mean i was a forerunner on youtube
the outdoor like posting hour-long videos posting once
a week posting things about your dog in the
title i told so many different people
who have big youtube channels now bigger than me how to do
things and i'm not taking credit for anything they did except
for what i told them to do how to how
to better themselves it took me a long time out of trial
and error to figure out that if you could
put like a bunch of cut pieces of firewood
on a thumbnail that people are going to click it you
know until the trial and error i told people
that and they didn't have to go through it themselves
Anyways, my point is, I have been doing this for a long time,
and I hope you don't take this as egotistical or anything like that.
It's not that at all. It's a fact. It's a straight up fact.
I would give kudos to anybody else in this, and I do. And I do.
To people that deserve it, that's for sure.
Okay. Well, that was really cool. Super happy to talk to him.
I was afraid he wasn't going
to answer there for a minute.
Well, it's nighttime, that's for sure.
Let's go outside and look around.
I can't
believe
I'm doing
this.
i don't have a fire or anything
so it's kind of just like lay down
and relax i think it's around
seven i'm gonna pull my phone out i just get
this other sleeping bag in here and uh lay down listen
to a book on tape or start reading i know i'll fall asleep pretty soon
and then i'll be up early
and out of here before it gets too light
and the day starts and everything everybody's buzzing
around and freaking wondering why there's
a man sleeping in the snow pile in the parking lot so
let's get all this squared away here nice
checkered checkered pattern on the innards
i don't even need to go inside both of them right now i'm
not even cold i do need something for my
head though there
we go phone eight
o'clock bonus hell
yeah all right well
i'm going to uh
i'm just gonna chill out here i'll get back
with you i might pass out i might not we'll see
uh go back if anything crazy happens i get busted
but uh other than that this is my home sweet home
for tonight, oh you'll never know the feeling
of this unless you do it, it's actually very comfortable
it's very very comfortable
the middle of the night i can't
sleep very good i don't know why
i'm a little chilled from the bottom
but it's not too bad i think it's more just me understanding
I'm in the middle of the city, and it's weird,
but there could be people coming around any time
It's just kind of tripping me out a bit.
I have slept not great. I go back to sleep though. Wish me luck
Oh, it's getting bright out there.
That was uneventful. I did end up getting back
to sleep a few more hours
I'm just gonna lay here wake up
and get up pull this stuff out of here and I go to the truck and
I'm gonna try and pull the truck actually
right up just haul this stuff right in here
throw it right in the back get on out
of here i got uh it's new year's new year's eve today
i hope to have this video out by new year's day
which is tomorrow for you guys i imagine
everybody's gonna be partying tonight
so please be safe obviously you're not gonna see this till
after that but the day after i hope you
are recovering well i hope that you're taking it
easy and you have some time
to sit down and watch a good
old joe video all right
so last look at the
old snow cave ended up being pretty pretty flat a little bump there
but pretty flat not too shabby
in the freaking snow cave
but what a different night
that was all right
over there there's
somebody
with sirens on cue
check check check
all right folks
well we're in the car
now trying to
defrost the windows i probably didn't get
as much footage as i normally do but this is how it was
man like i got here had to work
and then i didn't want to be filming too much at night um in the
thing but anyways fun trip hope you guys enjoyed
it i did notice watching back some of my clips
last night that the audio was messed up on my big camera
so i cut a bunch of clips and i'll have to
voice over some of it but that's how it is i'm using my old camera
because my my newer one broke
i have to get it fixed
but anyways i hope you guys enjoyed it happy new year's i have big news
I'll probably post it next week or the week after
It's big news I promised you guys
I'll tell you about for a long time
I just wasn't allowed to talk about it
Now I am
So yeah, it involves a TV show
Talk about that next time
You guys have a good day
Be kind to each other
Thank you for watching
Hope you enjoyed it
Goodbye
