Meanwhile, he is a man who needs no introduction anywhere in America.
One of the most recognizable names and faces in the country.
But how much do you really know about Terry Bradshaw,
who is out with a new book, Looking for Terry, a Memoir.
Mr. Bradshaw, a thrill and honor to talk to you, sir.
Thanks so much for the time here in Detroit.
All right, Ryan, thank you.
I heard that interview with Goff there.
That's kind of cool.
I never had a week off.
I don't know what I wouldn't know what
to do with myself well you know maybe you'd write a book back
then uh Terry let me ask you about this book
because how much of this was therapeutic for you
to tell your story but to help so many men out there
who are struggling to ask for help right
this book was that's exactly why I did the book I did it
because people people don't know about
the depression that I live with.
They don't know about maybe not my cancer battles that
I've had and the failed marriages.
And you know what I did, Ryan? I just opened up and
emptied my soul. And it felt good, it was definitely therapeutic.
It was good for me,
it's good for Pittsburgh cuz I direct a lot of my anger to them and
to Chuck Noll.
And then after being diagnosed clinically depressed,
and it was like a shock
to me at first.
And then to be treated and continuously, I'm still being treated.
And men will not go see
a doctor, men will drink, do drugs,
run around with their wives, whatever, trying to find
that happiness. And my book is to tell them, look, don't be ashamed.
Put your ego aside,
the macho aside go see a doctor get some help
and get that happiness that you deserve and this is
what my book tries to it's an incredible terry it's
an incredible message because i mean if the
great Terry Bradshaw can go seek help maybe one person out there
that is struggling can go get
some help as well i wanted to ask you about the job
because the job allows you each and every week
Maybe it's you know on the desk at Fox, whether it's an appearance somewhere.
The job really allows you to put a mask
on and forget about whatever you're going through inside.
How much of the job allowed you to bury what was happening within you?
That's a really good question.
I'll tell you why.
Because when you are depressed, the one thing you do if you had
the opportunity, if someone says, well, can you concentrate?
off. When I'm fishing, I concentrate. I love to fish.
When I'm playing football, I can be the
most miserable person in the world.
But boy, when I go out on that field, it's all football.
And that's a great, great comfort.
And then when it's over, it's devastating again. So the job,
whatever that might be that gives you,
that enlightens your heart or frees up your spirit,
man that that is that's where you that's what you cling
to i remember telling my dad after super
bowl 14 and i he he was asking me he said well
you know i said dad i just i just don't want to
play i'm just miserable he said well it's just
a game son and it took me weeks after super bowl 14
weeks before i could ever enjoy it
because i couldn't i couldn't allow myself to not
be ready for next year, the very next day.
I got to be ready for next year. We got to defend this
title. Can I get up? Can I be prepared?
Can I emotionally face this again? And man, it was
a struggle. It was just
an absolute struggle, just misery.
Terry, let me ask you, last thing,
how much would you say to somebody when trying to decide,
You know what? Life is hard.
There are hard things in life that you've got to work through.
And then on the other end, you know what?
This is too much. I do need help.
What is that fine line? What would you say to somebody about that?
Well, after so many failed marriages
and so many moments that I'm not proud of with the way I handle
my Chuck Noël relationship or the Pittsburgh relationship.
I finally I just I couldn't get out of the hole Ryan I was just
so miserable and finally I said
I got to go get I got to go find out what's wrong
and I went to a doctor and I went to that doctor
he sent me to another doctor who sent me to another doctor
so I did three years of doctors
and counseling tons of counseling
which was critical to get an understanding and then of course
When I finished up with the psychiatrist,
then he put me on antidepressants, which I'm
on today, which still doesn't block.
It does block the dark, dark, dark moments,
but you still drift off into it.
I know the signs, I know what trips it.
My wife knows when I'm going into my moments,
and so she gave my moments a name.
calls it Roy. And she says,
is Roy trying to show up and knock on the door? And I'll say,
yeah. And so we start talking.
It's very important to seek a doctor, seek counseling.
And you've got to have someone that you love
and trust that you can communicate with
and who will support you. And I had all of that.
And that was the difference.
An absolute thrill to speak with you, sir.

of people. We hope you go out and
