Not wearing my Dodger blue.
This is Dodger blue.
That's arguably.
I didn't say that that was not Dodger blue.
The last time I wore like a powder blue,
you were like, that's not true Dodger blue.
And then you give Maria a pass.
Oh, I did.
You know what?
I'm Italian.
I don't forget.
There is kind of, you know,
the Dodgers merch has different blues in it.
I mean, in general, it's the Pantone, whatever that.
Whatever the number is.
Forgot the number.
But there is an actual, you know, Dodger color.
That's right.
But hey.
Hey, look at the sunrise.
We're here.
We're here to support.
Santa Monica right now. It's beautiful.
It is beautiful. You have some winds on the way though,
right? It's going to warm up.
It is going to get windy indeed. Good morning, you too. I'm
meteorologist Maria Quibon.
We're already seeing some of those winds coming out of the northeast.
You can see it here, arrows coming from the land toward the ocean.
It's very light if anywhere
you are at right now,
but this is just a little taste of what we are expecting as we get into
tomorrow and Friday. Those are going to be the peak days of the winds.
So get ready for some
very gusty, dangerously high winds.
Temperatures right now on the cooler side, it's 45 degrees
in Santa Cruz, chilly. It's 46 in Corona,
about 56 in Palm Springs, 41 in Victorville. Highs today
ranging anywhere from around 84,
perfect in the low desert in the Coachella Valley, 76 in the
high desert to that 59 eventually in Big Bear with sunshine.
81 for downtown LA. So now we're
going to dip above the average, but not too far.
I think today will still be quite nice. 87 in the
valleys and the Inland Empire to around 77 along the coast.
We have a slew of weather alerts that
are going into place. I'll talk more about
that in just a few moments. In the meantime, I'll send
it back to you too. Thank you.
We have some breaking news this morning. Firefighters respond
to a small brush fire on VA property near the West L.A. campus.
We've got Gigi live there at
the scene with the very latest. Gigi.
Good morning. Just a short while ago,
LA City Fire hand crews,
dozens of men and women went into the area because it's a very,
some rugged terrain between the wetlands and the drainage ditch,
I'm told, right behind the
Veterans Administration property, but still part of their property.
And while it is a small fire,
less than an acre, take a look at this video from Citizens App.
Those flames were visible
four miles this morning when it started, just about 2:45 this morning.
Because it is a wetland
area, the fire department couldn't get their trucks in.
So it was very, very challenging.
They really mobilized all of their units
because there was a light breeze. And with a breeze,
there's always concern that those embers could fly
and start a nearby fire. So LA City firefighters
managers manned the different neighborhoods
and here the Veterans Administration campus,
they really stopped all over just for structure protection.
Luckily they were able to stop the forward progress of the fire,
but they're still concerned
about some hotspots and that's what the hand crews are doing right now.
They're cutting foliage,
they're making sure those hotspots have been put out.
It was quite the firefight this morning.
I don't know.
to the battalion chief, Cody Wireeater, earlier this morning.
I don't know if we have that sound available.
Upon arrival firefighters found a well-developed brush fire
that was then upgraded to an actual brush fire response.
That prompted a heavy response by LAFD firefighters,
and in total, we had a total of 70 firefighters
that were on scene fighting this brush fire.
Now, the area was a very challenging area to make access to.
It's a drainage in between the Veteran Affairs Campus
and also a baseball field.
and several structures that are nearby.
So immediately firefighters were able to employ
structure defense groups within the actual area
and that immediate area to protect those homes
and those apartment complexes
and then start to suppress the flame.
Now, thankfully, again, the fire did not spread
from the original start area, less than one acre.
The big question of course is how did a fire start
in a drainage area and the wetlands that,
well, no people should have been there,
but I'm told that the Veterans Administration,
They've struggled with homeless encampments being set up
in that area along with campfires
being started.
The cause of this fire unknown right now,
but the arson investigation team is on the
scene and they're gonna work
and try to determine exactly how it started.
And we talked about that light breeze that we're feeling here.
And the wind is definitely gonna
be the story starting tomorrow with that red flag warning
for parts of LA and Ventura counties,
starting at 6 AM Thursday through 10 PM Friday.
As those strong Santa Ana winds once again move
in with predicted gusts of up to 70 miles
an hour, that combined with higher temperatures and low humidity,
well, it will once again
create extreme fire danger for many areas.
Malibu is one area of particular concern,
the city already warning its residents to
use today to prepare for possible evacuations if necessary
and power shutoffs.
That's really the big thing
because Southern California Edison is already warning that
they could implement what they call their PSPS,
Public Safety Power Shutoffs, in Central
and Western Malibu.
As of yesterday,
they'd already identified about 37,700 customers for possible shutoffs,
but thankfully no power had to be shut off, but be prepared.
Let's bring it back here live,
we're on the VA campus this morning, you can see LA City
firefighters. They're gathered with officials
from the campus as their hand crews continue
to work in that rugged terrain there in an area they call the wetlands.
No structures damaged,
thankfully, and you're going to continue seeing
LA City firefighters in this area.
Once again, those red flag warnings, of course,
a matter of area, they're going to have much more
on that for you. But like the city of Malibu recommends,
today's a really good day just to
check your flashlights, make sure you have enough batteries on hand.
Keep those cell phones charged
just in case. And keep gas in your car just
in case you have to evacuate. You never know.
Reporting live, I'm Gigi Graziani. Back to you.
We're just going to have more
on those red flag warnings in just a bit. Thanks, Gigi.
Let's talk about the Dodgers and the NLCS.
So it's kind of a must win tonight.
That's right. Mario is live at Dodger Stadium with more
on what the fans can expect at Game 3 tonight.
It's do or die, Mario.
Yeah, you know, a best-of-seven series and the Dodgers are down two,
but they have home field advantage today.
First pitch at 5 p.m., Blake Snell starting on the mound
and Shohei Ohtani is back in the rotation,
so a lot of fans are excited about that.
Now, we are expecting not a sold-out crowd here
because there are still tickets available,
but a lot of people will be filling these seats.
We're seeing tickets under $100 right now.
Not bad for an NLCS game.
Now, let's take a look here.
The Dodgers were here at the stadium practicing yesterday.
I want to break down the history between these two teams.
The Dodgers swept the Brewers in last year's NLCS
on their way to winning the World Series,
but this time around, Milwaukee has turned the tables,
taking the first two games of the best of seven.
And remember, the Brewers also swept all six regular season meetings
against the Dodgers this year.
Now, L.A.'s hoping to return to Dodger Stadium,
helping to shift the momentum as they fight
to keep their World Series three-peat hopes alive.
Now, I do want to talk to DJ Sevier.
If we actually come back out here live,
there's a little spot up in the stands.
That's where DJ Sevier is going
to be playing some music, getting the people hyped.
What do you do to get people excited?
Just try to bring the vibe, set the tone from the time gates open.
I think we're gates maybe by like 2 o'clock today.
So upon entering, you just hear the vibe,
bring a lot of West Coast vibe, West Coast feeling to it,
just to set the mood, the tensions, you know, bring the tension,
calm the tension, just get people dancing, getting ready for the games,
set it for the players on the field as they come out for warm-ups,
too, and just try to, you know, create the vibe.
Yeah, and we were talking about how it's kind of like a roller coaster
and an instant, a moment can really change the vibe
of the entire audience or the entire fandom here.
Yes.
One song, very important.
California Love just to start everything off,
regulate, Warren G, just to kind of like set the tone,
let you know you're in California in the West Coast.
And then, you know, kind of just create that West Coast pride,
that energy for the fans, just throughout the whole fan base.
This is a music town.
Everybody loves music.
And I just try to feed off of that.
Hey, show your championship ring.
DJ Severe, he's been doing this for 18 years.
Mine's a replica.
He was on the parade bus for the last two playing music.
so if we are in the parade this year if we take
the World Series we can expect you oh for sure
i'm right there i'm right there right in the middle
setting the vibes playing the same stuff
i'm playing the stadiums in the stadium tonight you know just
to just to as we celebrate that's
one of the dopest moments is riding through downtown
LA the fans feeding off of it you know
shouting your name out there's even signs with DJ Severe
so it's dope love it all right DJ Severe
thank you so much let's let's toss it back doing
the the home run dance how you doing we're going
to the right like this wow okay all right back
to you guys let's do it again all right to the right
to the right to the right what about
um what about i love LA i love LA that's iconic i love
i love LA yes yes yes let's go let's get it let's go let's go love it
that's right thank you Mario
guy behind the music that's right okay
so fans are always looking for a way a new way to show
their pride during the postseason sandra took
a peek inside Dodgers clubhouse, they always have
good gear in there, so much good merch out there everybody
of course wants to support this team
right because this is a must win
the postseason merch just dropped for this series and fans are
sure to represent tonight as they cheer on the Dodgers
but all season long really, Dodgers gear
has been flying off the shelves, we're here
at the Dodgers clubhouse where fans are cheering on the
Boys in Blue, of course, by wearing blue
It's all about the merch right now as the Dodgers chase history
So let's check it out.
What are the best sellers here?
Let's bring in Lourdes, who can tell us all
about what fans are coming in here for.
It's all about the 17, right?
Yes, everything about Ohtani
What are you seeing, especially now that we're in the playoffs,
now that we're chasing history here?
People come in to look for the items, like, you know, postseason
Nine-time World Series Dodgers
Look at all of these years.
This is a really nice jacket
and it has the big LA in the back of the World Series, too. Look at that
We're gonna add another
Repeat in baseball is unheard of
I think we're one step closer to a three-peat for sure.
I think they could do it
All right, so you have so much merch jackets
and what else we do a customized
customization and in here
So a lot of people can't just especially
for this because it's Ohtani's signature and the dog decor
So a lot of people are just pretty excited for this
This is also another option in terms of uniforms and jerseys, right?
Tell us about these.
Yeah.
So we do have the blue jersey and also we have the gray one
We also have the City Connect
which that's what they use when they play on Saturday.
I just think they're really cool and I like watching them a lot.
The hats are going to be selling off the shelves right here
Obviously in Japanese, hiragana right here, Dodgers.
Let's go
Okay, so these are vinyl decals,
so you can put those on whatever, your car.
There's so much here
because you have brands all participating in Dodgers gear.
You have stuff for women, obviously.
We do have women's stuff too, we do have kids as well too
Look at the kids, and you said another
big seller is Hello Kitty as well.
This is one of the biggest things, kids love Hello Kitty, we all do.
Look at this, let's go, Shohei.
He needs to step it up a little bit though this postseason.
What do you think about how the team's playing?
Sometimes we get that little stressing,
but at the end of the day, we always try to bring it home.
Let's go, Dodgers.
Woo, 3P.
Let's go, Dodgers.
Let's start the Dodgers fans off young, right?
Because babies.
There's even baby toys.
Can't forget about the babies.
And you can't forget about the dogs, too, if you have a pet at home.
So you've got to get the jersey as well.
How about sales this time around?
Because I know Dodger fans, they've been in this boat before.
They have a lot of gear, but this year's special.
It's always when it comes to Dodgers time, it's always busy.
The only thing is that when they're not in town,
it is a little bit of quiet.
So Wednesday, so we're hoping that we get
the whole fan base over here too.
And a lot of Japanese people come to travel as well too.
So it's tourist is a big thing.
Let's go Dodgers, let's bring it home.
Let's go.
There are several Dodgers clubhouse stores around LA area,
even one in Anaheim too.
They carry all the official team merch and so much more.
They do have the full postseason drop right now.
So get it while you can because definitely it's limited,
but people want to collect it.
So hopefully, you know, we'll have another series drop too.
Yeah.
For the World Series.
We'll see.
Those Dodger clubhouses are busy, which just goes to show
because a lot of them are high traffic tourist areas,
which just goes to show the reach of the Dodgers
and how popular they are all around the world.
Yeah, the draw, internationally, absolutely.
And there's something for everyone, every price point there too.
What's like, you said there's like the new stuff
that's out that you think is like, that
you thought was like the coolest?
Well, there's the series,
the postseason series for the Dodgers and the Brewers, obviously.
So a lot of people collect that where it shows the team's names.
So we'll see.
All right.
I'm waiting for the next drop, I like
I know that we can do it.
I think we could pull it off.
The decoy was kind of fun to have.
I know, the dog.
That's one of their best sellers.
Really?
The decoy is a big, big drop.
Love their dogs.
That's right.
They do.
Take a short break.
We'll be right back.
17's your time.
L.A. Mayor Karen Bass and her former ally,
now challenger Nithya Raman, are making very
different cases for who should lead the city.
Roxy's here with more on last night's debate.
Got pretty personal.
Not surprised, right?
Jabs back and forth.
No surprise.
Yes, for one hour.
it was pretty heated.
Mayor Karen Bass asking voters essentially to trust her experience
and city council member Nithya Raman is asking them to demand a change.
Last night, both questioned whether
the other can deliver for Los Angeles. So this is the
final debate before the November 3rd election.
Homelessness, big flashpoint. Bass defending
her Inside Safe program and pointed to reductions
in street homelessness. Meanwhile, Raman challenged
It's cost and accountability.
Question is for both of you, and
it's actually one of the biggest
issues- A cut in the state.
But let me just say that for
the first time, we have had
a reduction in street homelessness.
This has not happened before.
As I mentioned, we've had 11%
reduction overall.
It did kick up last year.
In eight council districts,
homelessness went down,
including yours.
The main reason homelessness went
down is because our efforts with
Inside Safe.
We removed three encampments from your district,
those were the largest encampments that accounted
for as much as 40% of the homelessness in your district.
We have a problem that I know can be solved.
And one of the main ways it needs to be solved
is the city of Los Angeles needs to be in
complete control of the system
so we can have transparency and accountability.
The primary issue that voters are dealing with even today,
every call I get in my office,
the issue that I'm talking to about voters across the city.
And what I'm hearing from them over
and over again is that they are frustrated.
They're frustrated with the lack of progress
and they're frustrated with the amount of
money that's being spent without any accountability.
Under this mayor's leadership,
we have poured hundreds of millions of dollars into an incredibly
expensive program, Inside Safe,
which has been unaccountable to the public for which
she has refused audits.
And which has brought down homelessness a little bit,
but at extraordinary cost.
And now we see it ticking up again.
And it looks exactly the same as it did on day one.
There has been no adaptation,
there has been no changes to the program to make it more
cost effective, where it costs 80 to $100,000 per person per year.
Bass countered that Rahman had approved inside safe spending
while leading the council's
housing and homelessness committee
and Rahman said that her work improved oversight.
And she also did promise to keep
the city law restricting encampments near schools,
daycare centers and parks.
So homelessness a big topic,
public safety a big topic, immigration a big topic.
But let's go back to homelessness for a moment.
It really does boil down to this,
Nithya Rahman essentially saying, I can't be held responsible
for homelessness. She does claim in her district that it is down,
though yesterday we had political
strategist Matt Klinken and he says I live in her district
and I don't see it that way.
Essentially she's saying I'm just a city council member,
I'm not the mayor, so I can't be responsible
for the city of Los Angeles.
While the mayor is essentially saying I can't solely be responsible
as mayor because there are many other factors that go into play here.
So I think it's important to understand
the difference between the role of a mayor and
the role of city council member.
When the city charter of Los Angeles was written many,
many, many years ago, they intentionally
made the mayoral seat a weak seat compared
to cities like New York or Chicago.
So the mayor has a weaker position.
City council, not individually, but as a whole, has more power.
So while the mayor writes the budget,
appoints department heads, has the power to veto, city
council also amends that budget, approves that budget.
They also have the veto to veto the mayor.
So that's an important factor to understand.
Again, Election Day is November 3rd, three weeks and counting.
When I come back at 8 o'clock hour,
we're gonna talk about the Palisades fire, what
happened with that obviously,
and how each of them say they would handle an emergency
like that or something down the line in the future differently.
It's actually less than three weeks.
Less than three weeks, I know.
20 days.
Yeah, by a day.
20 days to be specific.
I know, I know.
All right, Alexia, thank you.
Here we go.
Yeah, I can tell because my phone is kind
of blowing up with the different texts.
And if your guys' phones are doing that as well.
Yes.
Yeah, most definitely.
All right, you mentioned the game earlier,
so we've got to give you the official forecast at first pitch tonight.
Go Dodgers, 5 p.m.
We've got some sunshine at that desk, the top of the 5,
77 degrees, winds are light 5 to 7 miles an hour.
It'll be nice and warm still when you get to Travis Ravine.
However, bring a jacket, you'll need it as the night goes on,
it'll get a little bit cooler.
We have this big area of high pressure
that is now dominating our weather,
with an area of low pressure to our east
and northeast. So it's the difference in
pressure between these two systems that's going to drive those winds.
It'll get a little bit breezier today and then downright gusty,
windy, dry tomorrow.
These are gonna be very powerful,
strong sand and winds, the first of the season.
So we do have a slew of advisories going into effect,
including a high wind watch.
So we're watching for these winds to get up to 25,
35 miles an hour sustained with wind
gusts nearing 55 miles an hour
in these areas here shaded in this gold colors.
That means downed trees are possible power lines,
so be prepared for the possibility
of power outages.
Also very hazardous driving conditions
and we have these wind advisories here, portions
of Ventura County red flag warnings are gonna go into fact.
This speaks to the fire danger because of the strong winds,
dry conditions and low relative
humidity values.
So please be extra careful with those fire ignition sources.
Heat advisory also because
of those temperatures getting into the 80s and low 90s.
All right, let's go back up to Stu.
Let's get an update on that drive outside.
Hey, Stu, where are you?
What's going on?
Hey.
Hey, Maria, good morning.
Skybox traffic brought to us by My Home Sold.
Got a little bump because we don't give
the AV enough love, Santa Clarita.
So we made our way out here to the 14.
Taking a look what the drive looks like.
out of the AV into the LA, they go.
The headlights, so there's going to be southbound along that
14. We're in Newhall right
here, but you can see it is definitely slow
and go as you make
your way over to that Newhall Pass where the
14 meets the 5. You're hitting
the brakes right about Soledad,
but before that, the ride southbound
looking pretty good. Let's take a
look at some traffic hotspots.

if somebody came up to a bar and said something
like that cheesy huh why are pickup lines even
a thing yeah well it works sometimes here's
something simple your body be rocking nature has fashioned
your person with a generosity that
polite language struggles to acknowledge i like
your body be rocking i like the body be rocking
better body be rocking by the way have you ever
been to but seriously have you ever been to a bar
and you threw down a pickup line
or have you ever had a pickup line thrown at you i mean
I get, I don't know, not like an actual pickup line.
You start talking to somebody, I don't know how to pick up stuff.
All right, well, let's get to our poll question
of the day, inspiring, right?
What's the best way to win you over?
Sweet talk me, help me out.
Yeah, do a task for me, do it, sure.
Hold me close, tiny dancer, prioritize me or spoil me.
Weigh in, go to foxla.com, slash vote,
maybe drop a comment, maybe drop a line.
Tell us what your best pickup line has been, if it's ever worked.
It's just like compliment.
You just compliment someone.
That's a pickup line.
And what's a good compliment?
Your body's rocking.
Nope.
Can't be that.
We've heard that one already.
Somebody told me that you have beautiful eyes.
There you go.
And I was wearing sunglasses.
Okay.
That's a pretty good one, right?
That's cute.
That's funny.
That's cute.
There was one time, it was me and my friend,
and we were sitting at a bar at Gracias Madre,
actually.
and there was one seat in between us this guy came up
and looked at me and he said
is this seat taken that actually earned him
a date I wanted a date after that and how to go and how
to go beyond that got a little weird you know maybe
no one's tried to pick me up maybe that's
the thing it's like i've never
been no one's ever used you gotta walk in and look approachable you
gotta have a smile maybe
a thousand yard stare i look around oh hey pickup lines pickup lines
You're just going to practice the art of fishing right there.
Hey, Stu, what's your best pickup line?
You got a good pickup line?
Hey, you know, I don't.
But I used to, when I was in my 20s,
I used to do the, I called it playing the numbers.
You just go in the bar and you say hello to anybody.
Anybody and everybody.
You cast a wide net.
Somebody's going to say hi, right?
Play the numbers.
See what happens.
Let's talk about some numbers.
This traffic's been brought to us
by our good friends at Jacoby and Myers.
Take a look at that 10 drive.
That's where we are, Santa Monica.
And we're up towards the end, and this portion always looking good.
We also got Fox Studios somewhere in that shot.
But look at that beautiful ocean.
Now, if this is your ride, this is actually fantastic.
Eastbound, though, if you're headed that way,
it's going to be a good ride westbound.
Let's talk some trues.
10 freeway on that 10 from the 110.
Give yourself extra time through the mid-cities area.
Let's take a look at some traffic hotspots.
Jacoby and Myers will fight for the justice you deserve.
And if we don't win, you won't pay a penny.
We have earned the trust of tens of thousands of clients.
Jacoby and Myers, because everyone deserves justice.
The Dodgers are back in town.
Security is as high as ever.
The LAPD continues its crackdown on cargo thefts.
Lots to get through.
We're here to talk about more of all of this.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonald, thank you for being here this morning.
Before we get into all that,
I do want to talk to you about the mayoral debate last
night. Nithya Raman, of course,
made some comments that televised. Raman said, quotes,
I want to replace the police chief.
I've been very open about that. I've been very clear
about that. I don't believe this chief has met the moment.
I believe he's lost the trust of
Angelenos, especially in response to the ICE raids.
That was her quote when she was asked.
This is her response when she was talking about this viral video,
which has been deleted
since.
But it is still out there, Nithya Raman criticizing
the use specifically of tear gas against protesters.
So I want to, Chief,
get your response to criticism specifically about you, quote, not
meeting the moment.
No, thank you for that opportunity,
cuz I look at that and a year later, to be critical
of the actions taken by the Los Angeles police officers
and other agencies who came in to
to assist us during what were riotous situations
and the time we used gas that saved lives
without a doubt.
We had officers on a skirmish line being assaulted
with commercial grade fireworks, Molotov cocktails,
vehicles and the people who were doing this,
the instigators were barricaded behind positions
where less lethal deployment did not impact them.
So they continued to do this.
It was getting to a point where it could have become
a deadly force situation which we wanted
to avoid at all costs by using gas to be able
to disperse the crowd successfully.
We were able to do it and we didn't have
the issues to deal with that we might otherwise
have had.
So I look back on that now
and I don't think it could have been done differently that would
have had a better outcome.
I'm very proud of our people,
the courage that they showed standing on those lines sometimes
for 10 and 12 hours being assaulted routinely.
Most of the crowd, we talk about peaceful
protests.
We have peaceful protests almost every day somewhere
in the city. They go off without
any problem at all. When we have a situation where
the crowd becomes violent, then it's
my duty to be able to protect the public
and to protect our officers on that skirmish line
from being assaulted.
And we had 52 officers injured during that time.
Some of them with concussions, some
Some of them with hearing issues
and some of them with a variety of other different
types of injuries.
So when I hear that kind of thing
and I look back from somebody who wasn't there, it's
it's problematic.
And I talk about just my take on politics
and I try and stay out of politics as much
as I can.
My job is public safety, ensuring that everybody is taken care of.
We've known you a long time
and the last thing you wanna be is like the big headline
in the big viral moment, you're focused on public safety,
but it is now a viral moment
and a big part of the conversation.
One of the things that also struck us last night
is that the mayor talked about security
specifically now for you and for the mayor herself.
Because when language like this is used,
that was a word that was used in this viral, that
security has been set up.
Has that been an issue for you, the mayor, the department?
It's always an issue to the degree
that we have security details and we have them for
a reason because most of the people not an issue at all.
But you have people who are on the fringe
and for whatever reason, something will set
them off and you have to be sensitive to that.
And we have a team of people that are very sensitive to that.
We watch what's put out there about us and we try
and do everything we can to keep ourselves
our family safe.
But we certainly don't need people instigating
or creating language that would cause somebody
on the fringe to take actions as a result of those comments.
So we try and just take a step back or I try and take a step back.
When I look at the political climate today
as we get close to the election, campaigning
is very different than governing.
In a campaign, you can say anything you want
and maybe someone pushes back, maybe they
don't.
But you have a limited amount of time
to get out whatever you think you need to do for
your potential voters.
But once you get in the chair, you see that it's very different.
And everything is very nuanced, very complex.
And to be able to protect a city like Los Angeles
with the number of officers and civilian
professional staff that we have deployed, it is a careful balance.
Every day, everything we do is very measured.
We're constantly triaging our resources to be able
to get the most from the limited number
of people we have.
And I look at where we are today
and it's like the last two years that I've been back
with the LAPD, it's amazing.
The crime statistics are down to homicides down to 1965 levels.
We're down in every single crime category across the board.
Morale is up within the organization,
recruitment and retention are trending in the right direction.
All of the indicators that you would look
at the metrics for a police department are
all stellar right now.
So I look at that and I feel like in retrospect,
could we have done anything differently to
get a different result?
I couldn't be more proud of our people
and the work that's been done in the last two
years that I can speak to that I've been back.
Our folks have been out there on the front lines
no matter what the circumstances.
We went through FIFA and that was flawless.
I couldn't think of a way where we could have done that better.
But it's working with the community,
it's engaging the community to try and keep things
safe.
We were able to do that in FIFA.
My hope is we'll be able to do that with the Super Bowl
and the Olympics and Paralympics
two years down the road as well.
But it is a balancing act to be able
to keep everything in the right order, in the right
perspective as we move forward.
And we've been able to do that for the last two years.
I'm very proud of that.
Worth mentioning also that Mayor Karen Bass,
if she does get back in office, she will not
relieve you of your duties.
And she says she has complete confidence in you.
Let's turn now to Operation Skid Row,
leading to what, almost two dozen arrests, suspected
drug dealers there.
Talk about the impact that those arrests have made.
Yeah, not just arrests, but strategic arrests for people
who were the shot callers, people
who were bringing the drugs, the cartels manufacture the drugs.
these mid-level players are there on Skid Row
and their role is to basically exploit those
most vulnerable in our society people
are there where the the missions are and other
resources for somebody to try
and be able to get their life back on track and these folks are out
there selling all sorts of different drugs
to folks you know it just just as an example what's
being sold on Skid Row, PCP, we grabbed 61 grams of that,
cocaine, methamphetamine, fentanyl,
an unknown substance, 209 grams of that,
marijuana, and guns, and then cash and vehicles.
And some of the vehicles you look at are Mercedes-Benz with Cs
and other guys using a Bentley.
These people are making a lot of money.
They don't live on Skid Row or anywhere near Skid Row,
but they exploit it. They're there.
And some of these tents that have been set up are storage
for drugs being sold, it is not what it appears in some cases.
I think that's one thing that Angelenos might
not recognize, even if they were to,
let's say, somehow be near Skid Row
or see those tents and things like that. But the MO,
the modus operandi of these people who are going out there
and targeting folks that are on Skid Row,
kind of blend in with the population.
And they almost walk around as if they are
one of the unhoused individuals. Absolutely, absolutely. They try and
blend into the environment
so that they're not stopped by police in the area and that
they don't draw attention to themselves.
But the amount of money they're making
and just the destruction of human lives that they're
responsible for.
And not just recently,
but over a couple of generations in one case, father son situation.
So you look at that and four street gangs
from LA were identified in this.
as we see, it's a multi-layered,
multinational criminal enterprise, starting with the cartels,
then through the, in the case of some other,
like MacArthur Park, the Mexican Mafia,
and then the local street gangs,
and then street dealers subordinate to them.
And this is a significant operation,
but in general, open-air drug markets like this,
it's almost like playing whack-a-mole.
So how do you make sure that this doesn't happen
again like this? Yeah, well, I mean,
there's a number of ways to approach it.
And the easy way, I guess,
where you get numbers but not really results is to arrest the users.
And we don't do that.
We go in and we try and be able to refer people
to services to get them off the streets.
But you have to go after the mid-level dealers who are out there
on the streets and be able to take them down and do it continuously.
And then you have to, and we did
that with our federal partners, to go after the cartels,
to go after those that are bringing large quantities
of these drugs to Los Angeles.
And we've had some success in doing that as well,
and that will continue.
This is a lot of the stuff that the public doesn't see,
especially they're so far removed from things like Skid Row.
Another thing that you've been working on is cargo theft,
and it continues to happen, too.
I almost liken it to like the Wild West
when they were stopping these trains and robbing these trains.
And really, some of that stuff is kind of happening today.
It is. It is.
I mean, you look at particularly the expanse
of land that railroads go across the country
to bring in goods from the port to points all over the US, Canada.
But when you're in the desert and you've got miles
and miles of stretch, there's an opportunity
to be able to break into the cars and to be able to steal from them.
They do the same in LA County here as they come
into the train yards or leave the train
yards with goods.
We recently took down an operation working with our partners,
our federal partners, the
railroad police, several different entities there.
That's really the benefit we have.
We have tremendous relationships
with federal, state, and local partners.
In this case, we took down a lot of high-end shoes,
Yeti cups, and products like that.
And it was, let me see, I got the numbers on that, 59 pallets of shoes.
A million in stolen property guys did search warrants
and there's a place called Shoes
and Shoes in Whittier and they took down
and arrested the owner of that.
These are big organizations.
Yeah.
These are very big organizations, right?
And they're taking the stuff stolen off
and selling them in what appear to be legitimate
stores that are in the marketplace for them.
Wow.
As well as online.
All right.
Let's talk Dodgers.
Okay.
I love the fact you've got the Dodgers right now.
trying to double up. We know you do.
We wear LAPD blue every day. We're all one big team
pulling together for a big win for the Dodgers.
What's your prediction? They're going to come
back. They're down 2-0.
They've been down before like this and been able to rally, particularly
now coming home. I think they're going to be able to rally
and get back in the series and be able
to win it. We have faith. What's the security looking like?
What's the what? What's the security
looking like? Security's looking good.
We've had a lot of practice doing this with the Dodgers,
the parades the last two years,
the victory parades and all of the games and the excitement
leading up to it. My ask would be for people
who are going to the games, who are celebrating on
the streets, celebrate. Go Dodgers, but do it responsibly.
Make sure you don't do anything
that's going to hurt someone else.
It's events like this, because we had World Cup, now we have
the postseason here with the Dodgers
and then we you know we talk about the Olympics coming up
really kind of showcases the LAPD
and shows like you know they do this time and time again
and so you guys kind of have it down it's like plug
and play by now well you know it's all there's
always factors that come up
and threats that we become aware of and behind the scenes we're doing
things to protect everybody that nobody hopefully ever becomes aware
of but yeah it's it's something
that we're pretty well practiced in the basics of it
and we're always in a position to be able
to bring in additional resources to be able
to deal with whatever comes at that time.
But again, the biggest part of this is working with the public,
having open lines of communication
and asking for the public's help and support
in celebrating responsibly. Well, let's hope that at least tonight,
the biggest threat is the Brewers. But they're not gonna be a threat,
are they? No threat. No. All right. Chief, thank you.
Appreciate you. Great to see you. Thanks for
coming. Always a pleasure. Maria, over to you.
Yeah, speaking of the Dodgers, I got your official
forecast coming up for that first pitch at 5 p.m. Right now,
we've got the beautiful view,
Santa Monica, also blue. So we're going, yeah, go Dodgers today.
Good day LA weather is sponsored by
my home Soul So at 5 p.m maybe you got tickets, lucky you, 77 degrees
at that hour we've got
sunshine still, that wind kind of light five
to seven miles an hour but bring that jacket
or just buy some new merch when you get there
because it will get a little bit cooler as the
evening goes on we have the wind that's going
to be the big story as we get into tomorrow and
friday so we have a slew of weather alerts going
into place including a wind watch wind advisory
for those wind gusts.
It's supposed to be anywhere from 40 to 55 miles an hour.
And then some isolated areas below the canyons and passes
could get up to around 60 to 70 miles per hour.
Bye, Chief.
Good to see you.
One of these days I'm going to come do the weather with me.
Yeah.
All right, here we go.
Fire weather watch.
Because of the fire danger that's going
to go up with the offshore flow,
we still have that beach hazard statement.
So beaches, if you're going to the coast, especially in Long Beach,
some of those homes really still getting
battered by some of those waves.
Here's our future cast.
High pressure is going to be in control.
That's what's going to be driving those winds out of the northeast.
Now, watch this.
This is going to be interesting as we get past
the next couple of days where it's going to be really windy
with the highest fire danger Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Watch what happens towards Monday, Tuesday.
Another area of low pressure is going to drop down the coast.
This is a colder storm, and we've got a good chance for more snow up
at Mammoth, which they did get some up at the higher elevations.
And then we've got some rain getting ready to move in.
So this is going to just help to mitigate fire danger, of course,
which is what we're looking at over the next several days.
77 along the coast today.
Look at how the temps jump up to the low 90s.
Downtown L.A., 81.
Look at the swing of that temperature.
91 by Friday.
And then we get back down to 74 on Tuesday with that 20% right now.
Chance for some showers.
87 for the valleys and the Inland Empire
into the 90s as well beginning tomorrow.
up towards the mountains 59 beautiful up at the lake
but it will get windy especially on that drive
to the mountains uh tomorrow friday saturday
the high desert 76 degrees getting to those low 80s
starting tomorrow and that drive to the Coachella Valley
of course really windy just watch those
winds on that 10 if you're headed
to palm springs 84 there today 89 tomorrow we're going to stay in
those upper 80s through the extended outlook there's
a small chance you could get some showers
as well next week Tuesday all right let's
