Virginia's attorney general launching a new voter protection unit, in part
because of what he calls President Trump's relentless attacks on our democracy.
Josh Rosenzweig live in Arlington tonight with the details
and what the White House has to say in response. Josh.
Hey guys, the election is just weeks away.
Ballots are already coming in, and yet Virginia's AG.
Is saying this.
We know that Donald Trump has tried to mess with elections across this country.
We know that they've tried to sow chaos, confusion, and fear.
We want to make sure that we're protecting the Constitution of the United States
and enforcing the laws on the books here in Virginia to make sure that everybody
who is registered has the opportunity to go
and make their voices heard in what is going to be a very consequential election.
That is Attorney General Jay Jones,
who spoke with us earlier Wednesday about his office's new voter protection unit.
He says his aim is to quote address the continued erosion
of the Federal Voting Rights Act, Donald Trump's relentless attacks
on our democracy, and his administration's efforts to impede access to the ballot.
As for what the White House thinks of that, a spokesperson sent us
a statement reading, "Radical Virginia Democrats like Jay Jones love
to preach about protecting our elections while mailing ballots to dead felons.
There's nothing. This is nothing more than the political stunt.
While President Trump is fighting every day to ensure that only American citizens
elect American leaders and to enact common sense measures like voter ID.
Back to Jones. Here is some examples of how this new unit may be used.
If people are denied the right to vote inexplicably at a polling place,
they're going to end up coming to our office,
working with the elect to make sure that we get that rectified.
We want to make sure that people who are monitoring elections are doing it under
the rules and laws and regulations that we have on the books,
and they're not intimidating people, harassing folks.
Jones did say that while he wants Virginia voters to know that his office
is ready to act, he does expect this election to go smoothly.
He also said that this new voter protection unit will be permanent. Gosh.
