Well, thanks for joining us here at six.
I'm Randy Meyer and I'm Kelsey Carlson.
Some new details emerging about the Eden Prairie homecoming shooting
from earlier this month and its connection to a barrage of gunfire in
Bloomington as the football team also prepares for another home game.
We have team coverage of these latest developments.
Corey Glover is live with more on the new security measures
in place for the game tonight.
But first, Karen Skelton is here with more on the timeline.
And Karen, I want to get this right. We understand a suspect charged
in connection to the Eden Prairie football game shooting.
was the target in the Bloomington shootings, is that right? Right kind
of hard to keep it all straight
but so far there has been one 18 year old charged
with felony assault for the EP shooting and for
others with third degree riot
in that shooting outside Eden Prairie's homecoming game where two
people were injured, three of the men charged
with riot appeared in court today, Muhammad Ali Haji
Omar Adan Abdullahi and Abdi Rahman Ahmed Jama
but according to court documents these three are also
victims in the Bloomington shooting
on October 6th where 100 rounds were fired, police said it's
all related to Somali gang violence
and Jama was the target although court documents don't
specifically say he was the target
for his involvement in the EP homecoming shooting
it does say the shooting is directly related
to an event that occurred in a nearby jurisdiction
where gang members from St. Paul
were targeted, EP police have said the two victims in that
shooting were from St. Paul.
Earlier this week, Bloomington police filed an ERPO, or Extreme Risk
Protection Order, on Jama.
That means investigators can seize firearms or weapons he might have
because he is seen in videos handling firearms in a reckless manner,
which is a threat to public
safety. Meanwhile, the alleged shooter
at the EP homecoming game remains out of jail.
Adan Abdi Hakeem Adan is charged with assault.
A search warrant unsealed today shows investigators
were at his St. Louis Park home looking for clothing,
guns, cell phones, and other electronics.
Two of the three who had court appearances today have requested
a speedy trial and have jury trial
dates set for November 30th and December 7th.
The fourth person charged has not been arrested
and there's an active warrant out for his arrest.
Now, with the numerous and recent Somali gang
shootings, city leaders have agreed to collaborate
to help bring an end to the problem.
Karen Scullen, Fox 9. All right, thanks, Karen.
In just about an hour, the Eden Prairie High School football
team will play their first home game since the shooting,
and they've upgraded security measures and have those in place tonight.
Our Maury Glover is live outside the high school and the stadium there
with more on what authorities are doing to try
and keep the games enjoyable and safe.
Maury.
Well, yes, there will be extra security at tonight's football game.
As you can see, Eden Prairie police
have brought in their mobile command,
all in an effort to make sure that everyone feels safe.
Now, among the changes that people will see,
spectators will have to go through metal detectors,
students must present valid ID,
and only clear bags and small purses will be allowed.
The district also hired a private security company
to help screen spectators,
and no one will be allowed to enter the game once halftime starts.
Now, at a meeting earlier this week,
district officials explained why these measures are necessary.
We can't prevent everything from happening.
But I think when we have really strong practices and pieces in place,
it puts us in a position that when something does occur,
that we can respond in the ways we need to.
And district officials say these safety measures will remain
in place through the rest of the football season.
In Eden Prairie, Maury Glover, Fox 9.
All right, Maury, thank you.
