Nobel Peace Prize winner Navi Pillay hits out at US sanctions on ICC
Oct 15, 2026
Just days after the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Navi Pillay
and the White House imposed fresh sanctions
on the International Criminal Court,
Pillay, the former UN Human Rights Chief,
says the timing was no coincidence.
I don't think they ever do anything spontaneously.
They plan this, and I do believe myself,
and many people share that view as well,
because we had a chance to talk about it in Nuremberg, where I was,
that it's not coincidental.
It seems to be a reaction to the fact that
the award was not given to the President of the United States.
The South African jurist was awarded for advancing peace
and international law.
She's also defended Nelson Mandela and other anti-apartheid activists.
We in South Africa under apartheid had no access to remedies
to complain about these immoral, racist laws.
We were told that's the law of the country.
We were told so by white male judges as well.
We only had white male judges in apartheid South Africa.
And I always yearned for a system of values and principles.
Trump, who has long coveted the Nobel,
accused the committee of demeaning the prize by honouring Pillay.
He has repeatedly claimed he deserves it despite starting
the ongoing US-Israel war on Iraq.
