Dolorès Marat, born in 1944 in Paris, is a French photographer recognised for her distinctive use of colour and atmospheric approach to image-making. After working as a laboratory assistant at Paris Match and later as a fashion photographer, she gradually developed a practice rooted in personal exploration rather than commercial commission. From the late 1980s onwards, she became known for her mastery of the Fresson printing technique, a rare process that produces soft, textured colour prints with a unique tonal depth. This technical choice has played a central role in shaping the visual identity of her work.

Her photographs often occupy the space between documentation and interpretation, marked by subdued light, shadow, and subtle chromatic shifts. Rather than focusing on narrative clarity, Marat constructs images that dwell on atmospheres, fleeting forms, and spatial ambiguity. This lends her work a quality where subjects—whether urban details, landscapes, or interiors—are presented with a heightened sensitivity to their visual and structural properties. Through this, she has developed a body of work that is formally consistent yet open to multiple readings.

Over the course of her career, Marat has exhibited internationally, and her publications have contributed significantly to her reputation. Photobooks such as Paris, de nuit and D’une nuit à l’autre demonstrate her sustained investigation into the photographic rendering of light and colour. Her images resist straightforward categorisation, instead presenting a practice that is at once experimental in technique and rigorous in visual language. As a result, Marat occupies a distinctive position in contemporary French photography, where process and perception are closely intertwined.
