THREE CMPD COPS RESIGN & THREE MORE MAY BE FIRED
Three Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) officers have resigned, and three more have been recommended for termination, according to Chief Estella Patterson at a briefing today (October 15, 2026).Spectrumlocalnews
What happened
The six officers were part of a private group text chain containing messages showing racial, sexual, and religious bias. The messages (spanning years) came to light during a North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation probe into former CMPD officer Seth Elliott for alleged misuse of the department’s Flock automated license plate reader system. Elliott has resigned and faces charges related to illegally accessing a government computer.Yahoo
Anonymous sources cited by local outlets (including WBTV) have described the texts as including a competition over who could arrest or pull over the most Black people, frequent use of the N-word in discussions of force and firearms, and at least one message saying the texts “sound like a clan rally.”Wbtv
Current status
Three officers have resigned.
An independent chain-of-command board unanimously recommended termination for the other three. Patterson said she fully concurs and hopes to soon refer to them as “former employees.” Final termination authority rests with the Civil Service Board (officers can appeal).Wsoctv
The officers are of multiple races (reports indicate white, Black, and Hispanic). Several were from the 2024 graduating class. Names have not been released because it is an ongoing personnel matter.Wbt
CMPD has reviewed body-worn camera footage, traffic stops, arrests, and complaints involving the officers and says it has not yet found evidence that residents were targeted in their on-duty work. Federal partners are reviewing for possible civil rights violations.
The department is pursuing revocation of the officers’ North Carolina law enforcement certifications so they cannot work as officers elsewhere in the state.
Patterson described the situation as “serious and deeply troubling,” “painful and disheartening,” and expressed personal disgust. The investigation and reviews are ongoing.Qcnews
This is the latest as of today. Details could continue to develop as the Civil Service Board process and related reviews proceed.
