Chicago weather: Rain continues Friday before sunshine returns this weekend

And hello to you from the Fox Chicago Forecast Center on this Thursday. I'm meteorologist J.D. Rudd. Pretty wet and soggy afternoon in some backyards and those showers lingering here this evening. But things will start to taper off as we go throughout the overnight time frame. Here are the forecast highlights, what it is we have our eyes on. Those showers continue, then taper, then come back for us on Friday. Temperatures taking a tumble over the next day or two. The wind machine also cranking up. But then, we've got some decent recovery coming our way as we go into Sunday. I think you'll like the extended forecast. Let's talk about what's coming up, though, moving into Friday. This, likely one of the coolest days we have had in months. High temperatures won't make it out of the 50s. You throw in a stiff northwest wind, it's going to feel so much cooler. And yes, a chance for showers from time to time on our Friday. Typically, our first day with high temperatures in the 50s happens around the 3rd of October, so we're actually running a little bit behind schedule by almost a couple of weeks. We're changing things up here as we work our way through the month of October. Now, also as we head toward the weekend, a heads up for you, frost on your pumpkins looking likely. Once the sky clears out late tomorrow night, a colder air mass drops in. It is going to be a cold start to Saturday. Look at the expected lows, especially our northern and northwestern most areas at or below the freezing point. Yes, that is going to be cold for sure. And typically, we see temperatures like this around this time of year, but we haven't felt this in a while. Last time we had morning lows in the 30s was back on the 8th of May. So it has been a minute, as they say. What's coming our way moving forward? Improvement. Like I say, short-term it sounds bad, but it won't be all that terrible for us. Sunshine, 57 on Saturday. Sunshine, 63 on Sunday. And then look at this. Most of next week, high temperatures in the 70s. Average high right now is around 65, even 63 in some cases. So this is well above the norm for this time of year. We just have to get through Friday and early Saturday morning first.
