Top story this half hour,
a Hennepin County judge handed down a mandatory life sentence
to a 27-year-old man for what prosecutors
are calling a rejection killing.
Jose Lopez Sheik was convicted last week
of first-degree premeditated murder.
For the 2025 shooting death, this happened in June,
of 22-year-old Kaylee Arseth.
Paul Bloom joining us now live tonight to talk about this.
So, Paul, today, loved ones remember the vibrant young woman
who simply lost her life
for just saying no. Simone, according to court documents,
Jose Lopez Sheik and Kaylee Arseth met
on the dating app Hinge just three and a half weeks before the murder.
Messages between the two
showed Arseth kindly but clearly explaining she only wanted a friendship
and was not interested
in a romantic relationship.
Now in response, Lopez Sheik here on your screen tracked down Arseth
at her apartment June 16,
2025 and shot her at close range at this news conference following
today's sentencing. Hennepin County Attorney
Mary Moriarty emphasized that this case was not
domestic violence, but instead a targeted act of gender-based violence.
Kaylee Grace Arseth was killed
because Mr. Lopez Sheik's refusal to accept that he had been
rejected by her. He killed Kaylee
because he felt entitled to a relationship with her that
she made clear she did not want.
This is not a case of domestic violence. This is commonly
referred to as a rejection killing.
Yeah, Paul, our viewers watched that news conference live
on Fox 9 all day this afternoon.
The victim's family spoke. They were holding her pictures.
They are, of course, devastated
and committed to making sure that their loved one's death
sparked some change at this point.
Spenard says family members stood together wearing
dragonfly pins and matching bracelets
and Kaylee's favorite colors lime green and light blue
her older sister Heather here remembered Kaylee
as an endlessly giving person who loved children
arts and crafts was actually restoring a motorcycle she
also warned others about the
dangers women face even
when setting boundaries online this was specifically not a domestic
violence crime, but a case where a man could
not take no for an answer on the kindest possible
request. My sister Kaylee spoke kindly
and clearly to tell him that she did not want to be
in a romantic relationship with him,
but her kind nature and she offered to remain friends with him.
However, in an act of revenge, he took her life from her.
Arseth's family went on there to note
that Lopez Sheik only had known Kaylee for three
and a half weeks before he murdered her.
In that brief period, they say he stalked Kaylee,
her parents, and sisters in an effort
to track down her personal information.
Prosecutors explain that rejection killings
are often mistakenly lumped in with domestic
violence more broadly,
making it very hard to track down just how frequently these types
of killings occur. Paul Bloom, Fox 9.
Such a horrible story. Thank you, Paul.
