Who was Rasputin, and how did he rise to power
o Grigori Rasputin was a Russian mystic and self-proclaimed holy man who was born to a peasant family in Siberia
o Rasputin had a religious conversion experience after taking a pilgrimage to a monastery in 1897.
o By late 1906, Rasputin began acting as a healer for the imperial couple's only son Alexei, who had hemophilia.
o Rasputin won the favor of Czar Nicholas II and Czarina Alexandra because he could stop their hemophiliac son's bleeding in 1908.
o The high point of Rasputin's power was in 1915 when Nicholas II left St. Petersburg to oversee Russian armies fighting World War I
o The Czar's direct participation in the war left Empress Alexandra, Queen Victoria's German granddaughter, in charge of Russia with Rasputin.
o Essentially, a German-born Empress, the cousin of the Kaiser, was in charge of Russia while Russia was fighting a losing war with Germany.
o After the Russian defeats mounted during the war, Rasputin and Alexandra became increasingly unpopular.
o The Russian Monk Illiador (Sergei Trufanov), a friend of Lenin, started spreading stories and rumors about a love relationship between Rasputin and the Empress.
o People were calling openly for the removal of Rasputin, and the conditions set the stage for the conspirators to carry out the murder

What happened on December 29, 1916
o The detailed events of Rasputin's murder were according to the memoir of the mastermind, Felix Yussupov, published in 1928.
o On December 29, 1916, Prince Felix Yusupov and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich lured Rasputin to Moika Palace in St. Petersburg to kill him.
o Some believed that Yusupov had used his beautiful 21 years old wife and Czar's only niece, Irina, as bait.
o When Rasputin arrived at the Palace, the conspirators first fed him food and wine laced with cyanide.
o When Rasputin failed to respond to the cyanide, they shot him at close range.
o The story turned much more bizarre when Rasputin, after the cyanide poisoning and multiple gunshot wounds, got up to escape into the Palace ground.
o The conspirators chased him and shot him a few more times.
o When they found him still alive after this, they beat him until he no longer moved.
o Finding him still alive at this point, they tied him up and threw his still-living body into the frozen Neva River.
o His body was found several days later with water in his lungs, indicating that he finally died only by drowning.

The Aftermath of the Murder

o Yussupov and his co-conspirators hoped that removing Rasputin would make Nicholas II more open to the advice of nobility and Duma;

o However, the Czar exiled the two main conspirators, Felix Yusupov and Dmitri Pavlovich, for murdering Rasputin.

o The murder and their exile did not lead to any radical changes, eventually leading to the Bolshevik Revolution in March 1917.

o Coincidently, the Bolshevik revolution overthrew the Russian Imperial Family, and the Bolsheviks murdered the imperial family shortly after Rasputin's death.

o Tragically, the Bolsheviks murdered Czar Nicholas II and every member of his family (whom we will cover in more detail in other videos) on July 17, 1918.

o The Conspirators were fortunate to have been exiled, as they both escaped to Western Europe during the Bolshevik Revolution and survived.
