Today is a how-to on the basic dip technique, which was actually one of the first techniques I learned. This dip will include white, rose gold, and purple, which will be my dominant color. I haven't worked with this color palette in quite a while. To mix up my paints, I will be using Floetrol, water, cups, and stir sticks. We will go through how to mix paints to get the desired consistency for a basic dip.
Good morning everyone.
Today I'm going to do another how-to video and I'm going to show how
I do just a basic dip technique.
I started doing this as one of the very first techniques that I
was ever doing. I actually had to look back at my videos
and video number 15, so a long time ago,
three years ago four years ago actually now I did one
in purple a little bit of white and some
bright rose gold so I'm going to do another one
of those today I haven't worked with this color
palette in quite a long time
so I have my paint water my pouring medium which I'm going to be
using Floetrol again today
and then I have some cups to mix up my paint and my stir sticks and
some water. So with this technique I don't set my canvases on any cups.
What I'm going to be doing
is dipping my canvas right on the surface of my table.
So I just have some small eight inch
canvases. I do tape off the back so that the back will stay clean
but I'm going to set those aside
for now and we will just start getting our paint in our cups.
I use probably about three to four
parts of Floetrol to one part paint.
I find that I can get a lot of cells this way so the
the less paint you have
the more pouring medium you have especially with the Floetrol
the more I find that I'll get cells.
So this is also one technique that I really like to use to
make coasters but I don't have any wood coasters
that I can work with right now but I will do
I'll do a how-to on a coaster video at a later time
so I'm doing quite a bit of purple that's
going to be my main color that I'm using for the dip
and then just a little bit of white I don't
want too much white in this I really want that purple
and the rose gold to show up so just a
small amount.
And then I'm just going
to shake this up.
And then I just kind
of eyeball it.
If you want to be more precise with your measurements,
you could always get a small
scale, either one for mail or a small food scale,
so that you can actually weigh out your paint and
then weigh out how much pouring medium you're adding.
I know some people do that to keep their
measurements really precise.
I just don't worry about it all that much.
So before I add my water
I incorporate my paint and my pouring medium
and then I check to see what the consistency is
and then I'll start adding
a little bit of water.
Okay so the purple is quite
a bit thicker. The
white and the rose gold are a little bit thinner
so I won't be adding as much water to those
But I just have my small cup here,
and I'm just going to add a little bit at a time
That was probably just about a tablespoon of water,
and I don't want it really thin
Once I dip the I find that I like a little bit
of a thicker consistency for the dip. That's actually pretty nice
There's a couple of lumps in there from my Floetrol,
but I can get those out. There's one right there
Okay, so really nice smooth consistency not too thin
so we'll add just a tiny bit
of water teaspoons
to the white if you want a lot
of cells in your piece
for this you could always add some liquid silicone
one drop per container or even sometimes
when I do silicone I only add one drop
to one color and that's enough that I find will create a lot of cells
throughout your piece but I just prefer not to use it
so I'm not going to add
any in okay
so that's a really
good consistency
nice smooth
so we'll do this
purple and a little bit more probably
do two tablespoons of water because that purple
is quite a
bit thicker
and just
keep going
small amount
at a time
pretty good
okay so we've got
a really nice consistency
of that purple so that'll be
good so I'm just gonna move my paint
and my water out of the way so what I like
to do when I'm doing a dip like
this like I said I put my paint down on my
surface and then I dip my canvas right into it
so to make sure that I have
enough paint down on my surface I just take
a pen I just have a pen and I mark
off the edges or the corners of my paint
of my canvas that I'm dipping into it so
that when I remove it I know that I need
to fill up this space with paint so that
I don't have any areas of my canvas
that won't be covered in the paint so from
here you could do any design
that you like I haven't done one of these in a
while so I'm just going to decide how I want
to do this put most of my
purple and then I'm going to have you can
also just take your stick and smooth
it out a little bit. You do get quite a bit
of paint on your surface this way and I'm working
on freezer paper and when the paint dries
on the freezer paper once it's all dry it peels right off
so I'm not concerned about having a lot of leftover paint on my surface
because I can save it for
other projects. So we're just going to do some white
and then some of this rose gold and this
purple and the rose gold together are really really pretty
and I ended up I have two canvases
so I'm going to dip more than once
and just show you what that looks like because you can reuse
your paint that you have
on your surface a few times so we're
just going to dip this do I want
just a little bit of purple through there
so one thing you want to do too is when you're putting
your canvas down just gently press in the middle
so that any air that may have gotten trapped under
there gets pushed out and then from here you can grab it
on any corner you could pull it up I like
to go from a corner so I'm going to pull from this corner
and oh look at that that is really pretty
so I do have some canvas showing
so I'm going to re-dip it really quick because I want to get that
that filled in so where did I have I did
not push down enough right in those areas but you can see
I'm getting a lot of cells
in this from that rose gold I'm actually going to stick a little more
right through there and we're going
to re-dip it get all that nice
paint filled in let's try this
again oh look at that so that's better
so I really like the style of this this is just one of the
techniques that I prefer and then
so you can see my edges are white so what I'm going to do now is
just very carefully dip the edges of my painting
so this is one reason why I don't want my paint
too thin because as you tilt to dip the sides you could tilt
your design off in a way that you don't
want it so we are going
to do this so just dip
that side this I try
and line it up to the same
colors I'm a little off on this one
but that's okay dip
that and then dip this side so there
you go you have uh I'll just lift it up you have all your sides dipped
so that they match your
surface so I'm going to set this one aside
and do one more because I have all this beautiful paint
I am really liking this rose gold and so I want more
of that in here and then a little bit of that
white in a few areas
so we're going to dip one more time
and again we'll just push this down
into the paint try and remove any air that might be underneath there
and then this time I'll just
pull from this angle and oh look at that that one
is really pretty too and just those cells are just
popping like crazy so I have a little bit
of canvas still showing in there so I just fill that
in and then I'm
going to dip
my sides again
make sure yep
so I've got all
my sides
dipped again
and then you know like I said there's
a lot of paint left on this surface
sometimes I just take paper
and dip it in and then use that paper for skins later so I may do a
little bit of that but you can let this dry
and then use portions of this that look really nice
for other projects. This area right in here I really like.
I like the separation of that purple
and the rose gold and then all the cells that I have throughout here.
You could make some small
pendants out of these. So that just looks really pretty.
But I hope you guys like this video. Let
me know what you think down in the comments below.
I hope this was helpful in just learning a little
bit how I mix my paints for a technique that I really like to do.
If you want to see some other
colors in this let me know
and I can do some other dips like this I have been
doing a lot of the balloon dips lately
and haven't really stuck with this
technique that was a really simple one
that I started out learning how to do
four years ago so don't forget to hit that subscribe button
and hit that bell
for notifications I do put out three videos a week
and I will see you guys in
the next one thank you for watching today
